"Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they're a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they're uppity," Westmoreland said.Asked to clarify that he used the word “uppity,” Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”
That pretty much sums up the message the Republican convention was going for.

-
Im sorry, uppity?!? Who is the candidate who cannot remember how many houses he owns and who's wife's get up at the RNC cost close to $300,000!!?? Wow!
-
You know when poor people want more from life they're "Uppity".
-
A Republican ridiculing a Democrat for being "uppity" is like a...it's like a...stupid. Republicans are the rich assholes.
-
If this was my representative I would have recall papers drawn up on him Monday and then I would be getting signatures until I had enough for a recall election. He would not be my representative for very long.
-
Westmoreland got the most votes in the July 20 primary, but not enough to avoid a runoff against Dylan Glenn, a black candidate who once worked for both Presidents Bush.
The Glenn-Westmoreland runoff was ugly at the end, with Westmoreland calling him "the political opportunist you can't trust." The strategy apparently worked, and Westmoreland won the runoff.
Just another dirty politician

translation: you're still a negro to us rich white folks
-
for those who are not from the south let me translate uppity: "that nigger don't know his place, thinks he's good as a white man, we need to teach him a lesson(beat him into submission or kill him). It is unambiguously racist, bigoted, elitist talk from a man who has no respect for anyone that he considers beneath him (dark skinned , poor, female, different) and he demostrates the need to make any such bend their knees and acknowledge his superiority. Personally he can kiss my a$$.

people voted for this guy?
-
Upity Negro
"a fearless black person who by social definition is "not in their place”
Kiss my ass Westmoreland!!
Yeah right you never heard the term before....let me give you another one
Racist!
A label given to a person, or group of people who hate/dislike those who belong to a different race. This typically applies to hatred based on skin-color.
The KKK is a racist organization. -
Up to this point in my life I haven't believed in mediums. But this guy just channeled Jesse Helms. Wow.
-
Uppity: snobbish, arrogant, or presumptuous.
It's funny how you try to bring racism into this comment when the definition of uppity has nothing to do with race.
Did he refer to Obama's race, which by the way could be considered white as well. Is he not half white and half black? Most importantly he is an American.
-
Seems pretty tame compared to what Obama worshipers called me for supporting Hillary.
-
Who cares what he thinks. Such a waste of time.
We have more important issues to discuss and even publishing his statement gives some sort of credence to it.
I agree more Republican BS-

Democrats need to unite and not let the Republicans use race as their issue. Uppity? We arent ignorant, we need to use facts to stand up for our issues. Issues that are important to us. Name calling and slur should not stand! Stand up with FACTS!
Republicans have caused our country much harm. Look at our economy. Look at the Constitutional issues. Look at how they have ruined our good name, using reckless war policies. Look at all the damage they have done.
Even the Republicans run from what they have done to America? They try to distance themselves from their beer drinking friend, who wasnt uppity. They were for him, before they were against him?
-
Ha, this is not unexpected. He knew exactly what he was saying when he used that term. The term resonates with a particular kind of person, which I would assume are not very happy with B.Ob's presidential candidacy. And if it was an innocent statement as he claims, then why would he not include Biden? Those are the two candidates, not Mrs. Obama. And furthermore, a white man who grew up in the South at the time of Jim Crow does not know about the offensive implications of the word? There seem to be many people who are willing to overlook the facts in this situation, but I am not one of them. He simply showed himself for what he is.
-
I am a native Atlantan, and believe me, Lynn Westmoreland most definitely IS a racist, and many of us here can contest to it.
-
What a shame The man does not know his head from his foot.Just like the republican party who is only duplicating Obama and his suppoters message of positive change and really aren't provide anything to better American lives.
-
The word uppity was originally coined by black people to describe other black people. It first appears in print in Uncle Remus,
The word uppity may not have any inherent racial meaning but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a history of being used by white people to describe black people. Like the words Uncle and Aunt, the words transcend their dictionary meaning when used in situations that harken to their historical context.
In the history of the American South, labeling a black man as uppity was often a pre-cursor to robbery, a beating, a fire-bombing, or a lynching.
A white Republican politician from Georgia who uses the word uppity to describe a sitting United States senator who is black is either stupid or racist. Nether of which are high on my list of desired qualifications for serving in an elected position in America in the 21st century.
