Time Magazine today reports that Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin attempted to ban books from her local library as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, and then threatened to fire the librarian who stood up to her for not giving “full support” to the mayor. People For the American Way president Kathryn Kolbert issued the following statement:

“People can disagree about a lot of things, but censorship is completely beyond the pale. Our democracy was founded on the belief that government shouldn’t tell people what kinds of books to read or what kind of beliefs to hold. No one with that kind of history should be anywhere near the White House. Sarah Palin needs to clarify her stance on freedom of speech immediately, and John McCain needs to explain why he chose a running mate with so little regard for the Constitution.”

Just another fact she is not fit to be president if she doesn't understand book banning. We already have an
administration that does not respect our constitution, we don't need her crap at this time or any time.

There are so many strikes against this woman. I wonder if McCain knew what he was getting himself into.

A party that stands for less government should spend less time deciding what you can't read and what you can't do with your body.

Maybe she read Fahrenheit 451 and thought it was a good idea.

If Sarah Palin gets into the White House you can count on her WHITEWASHING history, by eliminating facts. George W. will be well regarded only if facts are eliminated.

America must remember George W. and the facts, to enable us to move into the future with knowledge, not spin. If they are allowed to eliminate facts, they will distort history. We cant allow them to spin our history. It is said, we learn from history, but we cant learn from distorted history. The truth will set us free!

Can we trust her with OUR Constitution? What will she choose to ban from the Constitution, We The People? Our basic rights? George W. has done enough damage to our Constitition, can we risk our future to someone who wants to ban information?

Consider the film 'Fahrenheit 451', where all books were banned and burned to eliminate the influence of knowledge and culture. Something is seriously wrong with anyone who would attempt to follow this path toward a less informed populace, freedom of speech and freedom of press.

The allusion is that Palin, if elected, will, eventually, want all of us to remain barefoot, pregnant, and ignorant...so that she can manipulate us into being the sheep, that she, apparently, would like to herd...

This is a move in which there is no 'gray' area. I don't get offended easily but this is a direct slap in the face to anyone who values fundamental American principles guaranteed to each of us.

I can see how there are people on both sides of coal, abortion, gun control. taxes, etc, but book-banning and censorship cannot ever be justified politically or morally. Hopefully there's a full article coming out.

As I understand it, her objections to the books she wanted banned had to do with the books containing words she finds offensive.

As an adult, it's not up to government to tell me what words I can and can't read. Since this is a public library and I'm the public, I don’t think she should be able to tell me what I can and can't read.

If she's concerned about children being exposed to such words, she should talk to the parents, since it's the parent’s responsibility to raise their children, not the government's.

I always find it laughable when Republicans go on and on about how they want small government and to leave people alone to live their lives and then turn around and try to control what we read, what we watch on television, what we see on the Internet, what we say , how we say it, who we hang out with, how we raise our children, what we consume, what we think, where we go, what we do when we get there, and virtually every other aspect of our lives.

How are we supposed to take such people seriously?

Truth of the matter is that they preach "change" and assume the American public won't or can't see through their limited perceptions. The only "change" they want to implode on us, is that they want to disregard the constitution and by appointing conservative judges into the supreme court that will serve not for the people but for the Administration....look at what Bush has done with our justice system! I pray that this woman gets no where to the White House.

Is anyone other than me sick of hearing MSM praise this woman saying things like she is "awesome" and "everyone loves her" I hope they know the coat-tail they are riding before they give her so much praise!

Better go out and read all the books you can before the thought police come to your library and house and burn your books.

Every thinking American needs to barrage the media with requests that the truth be told. Do it every day!

If we do not scream at the media, they will continue to simply hand out the press releases from the GOP. Its less expensive and less controversial.

The thing that kills me is don't preach change and then your record presents you extreme right winging backing! I guess that's why they are playing us like fools...so maybe we won't look at her records and judge her....oh...because that's being sexist!

And no one should get on any national news or radio or tv show and tell people who they should vote for....even subtly.

    Oh wait...people do that.

If you're going to slam people for going against what is "freedom" then start a list in Washington DC and it'll be never ending...then start with the news people...and even the "fake" news people.

    Censorship is wrong.

But so is getting only one side of the story and running with it as fact.

She's not talking and it's pissing people off...so they are trying to bully her out. Call her a bully and then do the same thing in return and what do you have? A bunch of liars and hypocrites.

Guess that's politics for both sides.
