112 year old Hadisono Rukinem wanders the streets of Bantul in Indonesia with her ancient Javanese xylophone called the Gender in the hope of preserving a disappearing tradition. She has been playing the xylophone since she was 20 and has taught her children and grandchildren how to play the ancient musical instrument in the hope that they will carry on the tradition. She says she doesn't do it for money although she is given some when on the streets.

A woman dedicating her life to the preservation of musical and cultural tradition ... a true inspiration! Now I wish there was a video so that you could actually hear what a Gender sounds like!

It amazing - to be that passionate about something, you are still willing to spread the joy when you're over 100!!! I hope I find something I can be that passionate about when i reach her age. (and i will!!!!) It is 100% dedication to the cause! Hats off to the old lady.

    Here you go, JanaPokana!

This is a short excerpt of I Gusti Komin's new composition for Gender Wayang. Komin, a former member of Sanggar Cudamani has nearly a decade of experience performing some of the most Bali's most complex new music. As of now, the piece is unfinished, but already demonstrates dizzying complexity. This excerpt, which is in 7 (listen for the 2+2+3 rhythm in the left hand of the left performer) , involves intricate interlocking patterns (kotekan) in both hands. He also has a website: www.komindarta.com

How do you know when its time to pick up a new hobby?

When your 112 and playing the xylophone for 92 yrs and the only place it takes you to is a street corner hustling for people time and “ears” … but at least she is still smiling!!!!

I find it a little sad that a 112 year old needs to busk. Cool lady nonetheless.
