WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FUNES
If history tells us anything, it is that the only way to get America (not just a few select concientious few) to change their behavior is to hit them in their pocketbooks.
High gas prices does the following
#1: Changes behaviors in ways that nothing else short of rationing can
#2: The higher the price of gas the more interest there will be in alternatives because they become potentially profitable.
#3: High gas prices are the swift kick in the ass this nation needs before we truely have an OIL CRISES OF ALL CRISES and we end up in a real WWIII. For those who really remember 1973 ( I was 18 yrs old ) can know that NOTHING will change our behavior except some large motivator. If the prices of gas even go back to $2.50 or so...this whole thing will fade away and the SUV's will be crawling our roads once again. The proof is in the pudding....if you weren't there go back and look at the newpaper and newsmagazine articles about the OIL CRISIS in 1973...The fire started buring in 1973 and we have had 35 years to put the fire out, yet all we did was throw more gas on it.
Out rageous suggestion, but rational:
Impliment a $1.00 a gallon gas tax. Redistribute it 60% to truckers that move our food and put the other 40% into research.
Does two things: Reduces food prices which hit the poor the hardest and give a huge shot in the arm for research.
Honestly I am sick of people whining about gas prices...It is a myopic, self-centered point of view.
PS im having a very hard time figuring out where and how to send my "rant"..so if you got this twice, please forgive me.
