After 14 years and $8 billion, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) plans to inject the first beam of protons fully around the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the circular particle accelerator 17 miles (27 kilometers) long straddling the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva.
It will most assuredly not destroy the world.
What it will do is help researchers answer some big questions about the universe—why particles have mass; what dark matter may be made of, and why matter survived its brush with antimatter when the universe was young.
The LHC will accomplish all that by producing high-energy particle collisions—600 million per second—for detectors to scan for rare but telling debris..."

This is so exciting I can't wait to see what they find out!!
-
I'm excited about it, and I wrote an article, too! :)

Glad you mentioned the cost, and the starting time. About 1/2 hour to go....!
-
I say it's damn dangerous....worse than playing with fire. Mankind is getting too clever for his own good. He will self destruct eventually.
-
Higgs bosons, quarks, supersymmetric particles and miniature black holes.... Wondering what EXACTLY they are trying to solve with the LHC? Here's a crash course.
-
Yep people, breakin it down at CERN.
You may have seen this not so long ago, but hey, we gotta bring it back for the big bang!
-
wait.....im still alive.....did we win?
-
I'm in Switzerland now and they have just injected the first beam.....this is exciting to say the least. I still wonder tho...will the earth be annihilated? I don't think so, but just the whole experiment brings up some strange feelings! If no post from me after this, you will know something catastrophic has occurred! (but I doubt it!)
peace btw...all is well after several hours..but we did get a sign last night...I took this picture of Jesus and or a crucifix in the setting sun...hmmmwhat do you think? check out the pic at the link here:

How long is it going to take before it has powered up to the full? I heard there are about 600m collisions per second...is that happening already, or will it take some time?
-
so far so good...

If we are capable of re-creating gods work, then what next ? will scientist soon be makings artificial super humans ? will mans ambition to know all drive us to our very own doom? if we are going to pull the trigger on ourselves than why don't these incredibly smart scientist at least try and figure out what happens to our souls when we leave this earth? wouldn't that be something. But perhaps that is what the apocalypse will be and we will know all of the secrets of the universe, but in the end none of this will matter.

Oh Yeah! Betico I so do agree with you!
Playing GOD is NO GOOD!!
But I would like to know what happens to our souls though...;) -
actually that was me, not betico, and yes it would be nice to know what happens to our souls it seems like science fiction is becoming fact every day so why not look into that subject?

We gotta give ourselves credit for essentially defying the preset order of nature as it exists in our universe.
-
Sorry manwiththemasterplan,
it is YOU with whom I agree whole-heartedly!! -
I'm listening to the BBC on XM Radio and posting updates as they come in:

EDIT: The beam made it all the way around!

Crazyotto has clipped this article to Current which discusses Stephen Hawking's reaction to today's momentous event. Will the LHC actually re-create the black holes that sit at the core of Hawking's work?
-
It's almost made it all the way round to form a complete circuit. This is the link to watch it live, but it's totally saturated... keep refreshing, you might get in.
-
If this multi-billion dollar project is not successful, Steven Hawking will win his staggering $100 bet.

Well now I feel silly for stocking up on all that bottled water and anti-strangematter cream.

Why are we still here? Or are we? Did we get sucked into a parallel universe that just happens to be exactly the same as the other one? What a swizz!!
-
Is it me, or does gravity seem to be unusually strong this morning?
-
we're alive! huzzah!
this is very exciting. Tried to log onto the live webcast earlier but I guess it was too busy to load properly *sigh* so now listening to Radio4 for the latest. Looking forward to hearing their findings in weeks/months to come...
-
the article says "live" does that mean there is some site we can watch it?
-
I wonder if on this day, billions of years ago, scientists on a civilised planet had just switched on a Large Hadron Collider...
