It's no surprise that many estimates show more people around the country using their bicycles to get around, and now some employers are actually rewarding employees who ride bikes to work with extra benefits.

    • Its bike to work week!

Seems like biking has become alot more popular lately with everyone making the effort to become more green in their lifestyles. Check out this article about another bike incentive program that started up in Montreal.

    • Yes, bikes cost more, but so do cars!
AND, you don't have to pay for gas and cars naturally cost more! So why not bike in the first place? That should be an incentive right there!
And good for other companies who are giving incentives because we need to reduce our CO2 emissions!

    • If my employer paid me to ride a bike into work ( although I work third shift) I would seriously consider doing even at like three in the morning

    • Unfortunately, America is just catching up with the rest of the world. Please follow the above link to my recent post, "Cycling Boom Leaves U.S. in the Dust."

    • I would definitely prefer to ride a bicycle to work.

When I walk or ride a bike to my destination my whole day is better and more productive. I also get some exercise- win/win.

The only draw back is wind and rain.

    • I wish more american cities truly supported this as a form of transportation and made it easier to take advantage of all the benefits cycling has to offer.

Here where I live, the layout of the city roads actually prevents most people from even having the option of riding their bikes. It's unfortunate because I'd like to commute on bike to more places. I am however looking into getting a vespa in another year. My Honda Passport SUV just simply isn't cutting it anymore when it comes to everyday efficiency.

    • Even though you still need to purchase tires and protective wear it is still cheaper than buying a car, insurance, tires, gas, etc. Plus it is energy efficient and gets you more active so you spend more time doing something with your body and less time sitting on the couch wasting away and gaining weight.

    • I bike to work more than 1/2 the time. 8 miles each direction. I like the exercise and save money. It sucks some days when it rains in the afternoon and I show up all sweaty but for me its worth it. I don't think Flori-duh is designed for bikes.

    • Any incentive is good incentive. Bottom line.

I think it would be great if the IRS and state tax authorities gave tax incentives for bikers, similar to those for business designated automobiles.

      2008 automobile deduction rates:

      * 50.5 cents per mile for business miles driven;
      * 19 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes; and
      * 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

If I was able to deduct these rates based on the distance I ride to and from work each year, I'd be able to deduct almost $800 based on a 30 mile/week estimate.

    • My 18 mile round trip is keeping me in shape while allowing me to get some beautiful views of the Willamette Valley. Portland, Oregon is the best bike city there is ^_^ While we don't get incentives per se where I work, I will get free pizza and beer at the end of the month if I keep at it. That's all the incentive I need!

    • I get enough reward just by biking everyday to my school and work just through the joy of biking, but if more people want to throw down some more cash, it would definatly make it more enjoyable. If thats possible.

    • I think this is very cool although I feel that the incentive people should have already gained from it is freedom from gas and the opportunity to see their city differently than they would rushing by in a car.

Can't completely knock it though as I wish my job had this. At least to help maintain my bike that I've had since I was 16. Never gone give you up, baby!

    • 24/7-365 For me..

My form of cycle therapy keeps me smiling and humbled.

I've done the being paid for riding in some form or fashion, and in my experience it has destroyed the experience for me.

Now it is strictly for enjoyment.

I need no incentive. A wind free day is enough for me.

      Ride on!
