Krugman: The McCain camp is telling lies worse than The Bush Administration

Did you hear about how Barack Obama wants to have sex education in kindergarten, and called Sarah Palin a pig? Did you hear about how Ms. Palin told Congress, “Thanks, but no thanks” when it wanted to buy Alaska a Bridge to Nowhere?

These stories have two things in common: they’re all claims recently made by the McCain campaign — and they’re all out-and-out lies.

Dishonesty is nothing new in politics. I spent much of 2000 — my first year at The Times — trying to alert readers to the blatant dishonesty of the Bush campaign’s claims about taxes, spending and Social Security.

But I can’t think of any precedent, at least in America, for the blizzard of lies since the Republican convention. The Bush campaign’s lies in 2000 were artful — you needed some grasp of arithmetic to realize that you were being conned. This year, however, the McCain campaign keeps making assertions that anyone with an Internet connection can disprove in a minute, and repeating these assertions over and over again...

The McCain-Palin ticket is the most unfit ever to run for president. It'd be funny if it wasn't so pathetic.

Good article. Its nice to see that someone in the media is calling McCain/Palin on their lies. I just wish that more in the media would do the same.

  •

The sad and scary part is that half of the country believes them.

    Columnist Biography: Paul Krugman
    http://www.nytimes.com/ref/opinion/KRUGMAN-BIO.html

Paul Krugman joined The New York Times in 1999 as a columnist on the Op-Ed Page and continues as professor of Economics and International Affairs at Princeton University.
Mr. Krugman received his B.A. from Yale University in 1974 and his Ph.D. from MIT in 1977. He has taught at Yale, MIT and Stanford. At MIT he became the Ford International Professor of Economics.
Mr. Krugman is the author or editor of 20 books and more than 200 papers in professional journals and edited volumes. His professional reputation rests largely on work in international trade and finance; he is one of the founders of the "new trade theory," a major rethinking of the theory of international trade. In recognition of that work, in 1991 the American Economic Association awarded him its John Bates Clark medal, a prize given every two years to "that economist under forty who is adjudged to have made a significant contribution to economic knowledge." Mr. Krugman's current academic research is focused on economic and currency crises.
At the same time, Mr. Krugman has written extensively for a broader public audience. Some of his recent articles on economic issues, originally published in Foreign Affairs, Harvard Business Review, Scientific American and other journals, are reprinted in Pop Internationalism and The Accidental Theorist.\

    I heart Paul Krugman

It looks like the McCain/Palin crew is using the desperate times call for desperate measures technique.

I think they'll be making a call to the Society of the Freemasons next.

I wouldn't be surprised if after the election ballad boxes turn up in a river or a mysterious "hacker" has infiltrated the electronic voting system.

In the end I think it will all boil down to utter douchebaggery from McCain/Palin.

I'm not going to let this McCain/Palin/Rove shit go down.
    I mean it.
I already spend 4 hours a night, 5 nights a week, working for the Obama/Biden campaign locally.
    I'll make it 6 nights a week.
For all of our sakes, fucking ENOUGH!

It's all lies, especiall the media's number fixing. Don't forget that and don't give up.
VOTE (in case they don't steal this one) and know that the neocons/fear-beaten public are a small minority.

Educate others and make sure they all register to vote and get this broken country back on its feet.

TURN OFF YOU TV AND TURN ON YOUR BRAIN.

In the end, let's hope the electoral college has our collective backs, because the supreme court certainly doesn't...

    They are desperate, very desperate.

The idiots you see pictured above face serious criminal prosecution - if Republican's don't hold onto the power in this county.

They've made a mockery of the United States Presidential office and elections by putting forth an inexperienced screw job like palin and lying at unprecedented (I think) levels.

We need to film every poling location while conducting exit polls and have everyone sign petitions for criminal investigations if the "official" election results don't reasonably match exit polls.

Don't let this election be stolen! One of the ways to be sure is to OVERWHELMINGLY vote for Obama / Biden.

We have to spread the truth about McCain ourselves because it's clear the corporate media won't. NOW. FAST. FURIOUS. EVERYWHERE.

We are in the two-minute drill with no timeouts. No more sitting on the sidelines and allowing the McCain campaign to rack up points with countless distortions.

As we've seen with The Real McCain 2 (nearly 4.5 million views and counting!), once the truth gets out, it's hard to stop. In the last few days we have seen a disgusting descent into the worst of sleazy smear politics. We need to spread the facts and the truth. Send this to your friends and relations, especially if they are unsure or undecided—they're more willing to believe you than a talking head!

Spread the truth. Don't wait. It starts with you.

This should be no surprise to anyone these people are desperate to keep control so they can keep thier war and fear macnone going in able to feed Bush's axis of greed Oil-Guns-and Bombs, and also to avoid prosecution for the past 8 years of atrocities. They have been lying for so long they don't know what the truth is.

There's something about the way the McCain campaign is promoting their ideas, agenda, etc. It's like they are acting as if they know they are going to win, like they are just playing along with the charade somehow...it totally explains the Palin choice for VP, clearly Palin is not qualified, no question about it, no doubt.

List Palin's credentials, choices, and throw in Palin's speeches just for the cherry on top, and you've actually not just got an unqualified choice, but a pretty bad one, one that does not reflect what is in the best interests of American citizens.

But then again, the current administration hasn't ever done what's in the best interests of American citizens, and 4,000 soldiers, 500,000 Iraqi men, women, and children, are dead, and $2.3 trillion dollars of taxpayer dollars are "missing", that was in a speech given to the press by Rumsfeld himself, on September 10, 2001!!

The kindergarten sex commercial just shows the depth of the sickness of the Bush McCain Palin campaign, to link children to questionable sex education is just plain sick and twisted.

The positive take away from this is to use it to mobilize Obama voters, especially young voters who traditionally don't vote and can make a big impact on this election. VOTE! And take your friends to vote! And their friends!

All of these are great comments, but maybe just posting on Current is preaching to the choir, people need to start posting on other blogs also, especially blogs that label themselves as "conservative" or "right-wing". People have got to wake up, for everyone's sakes, and our kids...

Even when the have the facts checked they blame the lies on Obama even though he wasn't the one who told the lies.

So they even lie about the source of the lies.

    from abcnews article:

Critics have questioned Palin's experience since McCain chose her as his running mate August 29. She has been governor of Alaska for less than two years and served as mayor of her hometown of Wasilla, outside Anchorage, for six.
