Although he still likes to say being governor of California is the best job he's ever had, Schwarzenegger has faced near-constant criticism from all sides in the state's drawn-out fiscal crisis.
It's the same type of crisis he promised to lead the state out of when he jumped from Hollywood into politics five years ago, replacing former Gov. Gray Davis and promising to ``blow up the boxes'' of state government.
Forget the GOP national stage for the moment: Schwarzenegger put off any plans to appear on the campaign trail with John McCain, a good friend, and gave up a prime-time speech at the Republican National Convention last week.
And Schwarzenegger's hopes of putting a ballot measure before voters in November to shore up the state's water supply are all but doomed, just like last year's vision for sweeping health care reform.
After saying repeatedly he wouldn't raise taxes, Schwarzenegger proposed a 1 cent increase in the state sales tax for three years to help close the state's $15.2 billion budget deficit. That prompted a furious backlash from lawmakers in his own party and a rebuke from former Gov. Pete Wilson, a fellow Republican who has been one of Schwarzenegger's political confidantes.
Earlier this week, Schwarzenegger's short but lively political career came full circle when the state prison guards union took the formal steps to begin a recall campaign against him, citing ``catastrophic leadership failings and inept management.''

People can use any amount of things gone wrong in our mucked up world to fault this man Scwartzenegger but in so many words he told McSame to take a shit in his hat put it back on his head and wear it. He did this because McCain is a bootlicking dog for Big Oil. They killed GM's EV1 Electric car in California in 1997 after 100 years of polluting the air so badly that the old,the sick,and babies die there from poor air quality.It's trees that produce oxygen and help to buffer the smog. And
deciduous trees are in short supply in S.California.
And to make matters worse the Governor has had to tell his fellow citizens of California that they sadly must
get used to forrest fires destroying what scarce trees they still have due to Global Warming getting worse.
My beloved aunt Isabel Dilapi was one of the most decent,kind and generous souls ever. She died a slow ,agonizingly painful and horrible death due to the breast cancer she succumbed to as a result of that smog.You might not care because you didn't know my aunt or have to feel her pain.Nor might you care about the Iraqi mother I witnessed schriek in horror when U.S.ordinance slaughtered her innocent child ripping that child away from her forever. And you might not care about the agonizing pain she felt and the out of control hysteria she exhibited because that wasn't your child nor your pain you were forced to feel either. But Bush & McSame & the Saracuda all represent the evil minions of Big Oil who are War Criminals.And this man stood up to them.You can't help but admire his decency & courage for that. When
