22 stuck on stalled freighter in Gulf of Mexico as Ike bears down

A freighter has broken down about 120 miles southeast of Galveston, TX and is directly in the path of Hurricane Ike. But high winds and waves have thwarted all coast guard efforts at a rescue for the 22 crew members on board. Another rescue attempt will be made later, but for now, the plan is for the 22 to try and ride out the storm on the ship.

    It's not an oil tanker but it will be carrying a lot of fuel for its own engines. The ship is the Antalina, it's a bulk carrier, and it's carrying petroleum coke, according to Reuters. According to Wikipedia, petroleum coke is a by-product of the oil refining industry. It's a solid and is almost pure carbon.

    The last report I read said they have deployed a sea anchor, are riding with the bow into the wind, and the crew is well.

    22 men. The ship they love. And the storm of the century.

    When they make it out of this they'll have a hell of a story to sell.
