Metallica interview canceled over mention of torrent

Image...
A Swedish journalist reviewed the new Metallica record, based on a mashup he heard from a bit-torrent. The version cut out parts of the songs, which the writer appreciated. He said it was like removing a person from a fat suit.

Metallica's label, Universal, canceled the interview because the writer linked directly to where you can download the music for free.

Metallica has long been at war with the internet.

Bit silly on the journos part if you ask me, linking to an illegal download of the track.

But maybe it's a bit OTT on Metallica' side, I mean how many people do they think aren't gonna know to search it in Google if they wanna find it...

    "mashups" mixes are not illegal

I'm still mad Enter Sandman couldn't be transferred to Rock Band 2 (from Rock Band 1) because Metallica wanted more money.

Too bad sometimes you just have to deal with what's given to you, or give what you have knowing that you are an icon and better society as a whole for giving.

These guys should just get on board with the internet instead of fighting, they wont win.

"If you can't listen to a full 7min song, then I can't give a full interview," thats what I'll say

    News flash, Metallica:
The internet isn't going anywhere, and as long as it exists, people are going to find ways to download music for free. Find a way to deal instead of crying about it.

This is why I listen to Megadeth. They're the lesser of two evils.

Bit batty, but I just saw these guys live on TV and their new single is pretty good; awesome solo and reasuringly long, about 7 minutes!

I think that Metalica sucks first off, Megadeath is way better, and that Metalica has lost focus on music and are solely focused on making as much money as possible, it sucks, but they are rich as hell.

    Awww, poor rich musicians.

Are they not rich enough already? They should do a Radiohead, make a couple of tracks more freely available, and sit back and count the money they've raked in without feeling like greedy arseholes. Yes, there's copyright, intellectual property rights and the sense that your work should be valued, but there's also being astronomically rich and unnecessarily greedy.

Yet, Radiohead GIVES their music away for free on the internet and are extremely successful (and significantly more talented than Metallica).

Ha, they're not gonna win against the internet. Get in or lose out.

Bit dodgy of the journalist to print the link nonetheless - unless it was a legal mashup (which uses less than a certain legally set length of each song), in which case they have absolutely no right to complain, as it's an independant derivative work.

    Well.
I personally give away almost everything musically on the internet. Now. That's how I make my living. Oh wait.. I don't make any money.. ha !
So. Let's hope that touring produces something for all the pay it forwards that are needed on the planet. The last two tours I went on paid me about seventy five bucks, granted no one really new who I was, I was playing everything from coffe shops to punk rock bills at the knitting factory, to street corners if need be )
That's how radio head is making there money. They are on commercial radio at least fifty times a day, and they are being paid a million dollers a show. I love them, so I am sure they are paying it forward :)

Metallica have been on the side of the light from the get go. Do you know the words your listening to in that catchy overproduced make you wanna rock your socks off music ??
Star wars was not kidding.. except.. one concept didn't get through. Peace within equates peace without.

So people are picking there battles.
I choose to let the music speak for itself, and
to hold strong on the belief I will have enough money to feed my family one day if I just hold on long enough.

Cry more, Metallica - you're flogging a dead horse, and looking like petty schoolchildren in the process. People looking for serious hardcore don't go to you anyway, so even though you're old school you seem like poseurs. Break your old, dry, used up guitar riff mold and do something original - then give it away. For the first time in your life you'll feel good about yourselves, trust me.

"Metallica's label, Universal, canceled the interview because the writer linked directly to where you can download the music for free" <-- Metallic doesn't own Universal but vice versa, stay objective folks.

    From Blabbermouth:
METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", started circulating illegally online last week after a French record store mistakenly began selling copies.

"By 2008 standards, that's a victory," drummer Lars Ulrich told USA Today. "If you'd told me six months ago that our record wouldn't leak until 10 days out, I would have signed up for that. We made a great record, and people seem to be getting off on it way more than anyone expected."

I have noticed that they have actually stopped crying and moved forward when it comes to piracy and accepting the fact that you can't stop it, nevertheless unprofessional job by the journalist (which recieves promo's) I must say I feel a bit ashamed that he lives in the same country as myself. It would have been a difference if he had downloaded it on his private time but because he was reviewing the record and he gets the stuff for free so he has to play by the rules.

    |Filesharing=good |Piracy (people selling pirated material and making a huge profit of it instead of distributing it for free)=bad

    just my 2 cents.
