NOW PAC: Palin may be a woman but isn't strong on women's issues, endorses Obama

Image...
The National Organization for Women Political Action Committee endorsed the Obama-Biden ticket today. Not a huge surprise -- Obama and Biden usually get high marks from NOW for their Senate votes.

But it was a blow to the McCainiacs, who are counting on their Veep-nominee, Gov. Sarah Palin, to attract female voters. Trouble is, a lot of organizations don't compile ratings for governors. And when Palin was asked to supply answers to the nonpartisan Project Vote Smart's "National Political Courage Test" -- basically her positions on the issues, she refused -- she didn't. Or, as Project VoteSmart says on its website (with their capitals):

"Governor Sarah Heath Palin REPEATEDLY REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY RESPONSES TO CITIZENS ON ISSUES THROUGH THE 2006 NATIONAL POLITICAL AWARENESS TEST WHEN ASKED TO DO SO BY key national leaders of both major parties including:

John McCain, Republican Senator

Geraldine Ferraro, Former Democratic Congresswoman

Michael Dukakis, Former Democratic Governor

Bill Frenzel, Former Republican Congressman

Richard Kimball, Project Vote Smart President"

Not that Palin would score well with women who are pro-abortion rights (she opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest.) Plus, she supports McCain's opposition to legislation requiring equal pay for women.

Yes, she has huge fans among anti-abortion rights advocates but while she was mayor of tiny Wasilla, AK, the city billed victims of sexual assaults (and their insurance companies) for the cost of rape kits and forensice examinations. Wasilla's police chief said the kits, which cost between $300 and $1,200, would be a burden to taxpayers.

McCain scores very poorly among women's organizations who rate the candidates. Here's an sampling from the nonpartisan folks at Project VoteSmart:

2007: In 2007 American Association of University Women gave Senator McCain a grade of 0.

2007: Senator McCain supported the interests of the Federally Employed Women 10 percent in 2007.

2007: Based on a point system, with points assigned for actions in support of or in opposition to League of Women Voters's position, Senator McCain received a rating of 17.

2005-2006: Senator McCain supported the interests of the American Association of University Women 20 percent in 2005-2006.

2005-2006: Senator McCain supported the interests of the Business and Professional Women USA 33 percent in 2005-2006.

2005-2006: Senator McCain supported the interests of the Federally Employed Women 30 percent in the 2005-2006.

2005-2006: Senator McCain supported the interests of the National Organization for Women 13 percent in 2005-2006.

And people still think these nationally divisive and run-from-the-fight responses are the right qualities for a potential President?

The problem facing conservatives is that the world is changing and so are women's issues. I wonder what Palin would say about burqas and the abuse and depression of women in the Middle East. Or about single parenthood and poverty versus abortion and personal comfort? She simply doesn't perform what's needed.

You can't just wave a woman in front of skeptical voter's faces and expect them to vote for you.

What a rational person sees as negative points about Palin are actually positive to the ultra-conservative base. Story after story continues to come out about how horrible her policies and beliefs are and yet she remains popular. What's scary is that she truly represents most of middle America. Look what those views have done to this country for the last 8 years.

Im just glad that a WOMEN'S organization is publicly not endorsing that Palin lady.
For a while there I was almost ashamed of my gender.

*Those damned polls! They were/are making fools out of us

    Drawk,

Fair call but I doubt [meaning hope] it is not as true as it seems.

Public figures are themselves toys of those who use them. Such figurines may appeal to moms and pops; "she's such a nice seeming girl", but within factions there are factions.

I've known a lot of people in the last 50 years but none would ever think killing animals from a helicopter was anything but crazy, and most would say up front it was something no true Christian would ever do for sport.

And let's recall where the Fundamentalist Christian base is right now, economically - facing a bankrupt country, being squeezed to bail out the loan gougers and money-changers, led into more wars, and being asked to reelect the same flock of swindlers who most gain from letting it all happen.

It's one thing to say that "they go to our church so they are just like us" another to notice - these people have absolutely no mercy, soul or conscience. They just screw everyone out of greed and selfishness. .

I think they do see, or will see, what has happened over the last 8 years and it isn't consistent with any religious communities' values.

It looks either too incompetent or crooked to be tolerable. These same people must be wondering - "Another 4 years of Bush from a guy, a preacher, we don't really trust, who can't tell the truth to his own congregation, and a girl who seems unhinged?"

Now is an irrelevant organization. Governor Palin is what NOW has given it's nod to for years. The governors only problem is that she is not a liberal hence cannot be allowed by NOW. Just as the ACLU is not an organization in support of the Bill of Rights, NOW does not support all women who successfuly have a family and career, only those who adhere to their extremest, left wing agenda.

if this were a movie and palin was running for vp it would be a bomb because the idea of her being a vp or president is so rediculous people would want to pay there 10-15 dollars to see the rediculous concept. think about it for real republicans when you go to vote. do you want to elect a candidate so bad at her job she cant muster the support of her own base?

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Envi ronment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

There's a dick and balls under that skirt, I just know it! As much as she like to fuck people over, she needs the dick. Anybody that is for shooting pedators from helicopters, but against the Special Olympics, has got to have a furry pair.

As a woman, Im ashamed thats she is even on the ticket. What she stands for does not represent MOST of the women I know. How can she possibly lead for me, when she doesnt believe in anything I do?

    unashamed_muse
  •

I don't care what she stands for or what she believes in.

All I care about is her low level of intelligence. She has made it very clear to me that she is not a very deep thinker.

Her voice is not strong and neither is her mental ability.

Watch her speeches and check out the Charles Gibson interviews. Make sure you have a box of tissue because you will eventually laugh your ass off when you realize how much of a joke this whole election has become.

And then you will cry some more when you realize how it will impact your life when she takes over):

I'm rooting for Obama /Biden but the CIA will make sure that doesn't happen

lol, real shocker that NAZI organization for women wouldn't endorse a successful pro-life candidate. Why is this news? I think it's a pretty safe assumption that McCain/ Palin never assumed they'd have a shot at this worthless endorsement. NOW is not about the advancement of ALL women, only liberal abortion lovers.

    Liberal_Extinction

LOL!! Just because a woman does not want the government inside her uterus, does not make her pro abortion.

Liberal_Extinction [never once exhibiting the slightest bias] writes,

"NOW is not about the advancement of ALL women, only liberal abortion lovers." That's written into the membership laws? "Must Love Abortion!" You've seen this and can document it?

Paratus chimes in with - "Now is an irrelevant organization." Like Europe to the neo--cons? Really big but not really there?

Anyone else remember the psychotic lines used by the Red Guards to describe their enemies?

    Capitalist Roader!
    Running Dogs!
    Rightist Deviationist!
    Leftist Deviationist!
    Centerist Deviationist!

It looks like the far right has the same hilarious tendency to torture language to inflate political differences into criminality and treason.

    America haters!
    Enemy lovers!
    Success haters!
    Anti-lifers!
    Baby haters!
    Surrender Monkeys!

and now another one - Liberal abortion lovers!

Liberals want all Liberals to be Aborted? No wait - the right does!

Liberals get all warm and fuzzy thinking about dead fetuses? You people are bent enough to believe that?

Add to that NOW is " NAZI organization for women." They all shout Zeig Heil at meetings, do they? So Liberals are NAZIs - what does that make NAZIs?

Getting further lost in the woods, NOW "is not about the advancement of ALL women." That is horrible. Is the advancement of "most: women not enough? A majority? "Some"?

Or is that only covered entirely by the Daughters of the American Revolution?

["The National Society of DAR is the final arbiter of the acceptability of all applications for membership. Membership in DAR is open to women at least eighteen years of age who can prove lineal bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving United States independence."] Nothing exclusive about that, is there?

Is this how it works for you guys? If a female organization leans left it's a bunch of snooty, lawless, blood crazed, godless, elitist criminals. If it's an organization leaning right it's a divine group of saints? Is that not being a little simple in the head?

Add in, "the ACLU is not an organization in support of the Bill of Rights.." American Civil Liberties do not derive from the Bill of Rights? Pal, this is news.

Finally, "NOW does not support all women who successfuly have a family and career, only those who adhere to their extremest, left wing agenda."

Well now. The heavy burden of proof is lifted. All you have to do is assert something dumb and it is true!

Nothing grossly defamatory about all these hyperbolic views, is there?

    AveryMoore

Guys, it is not because she's a woman that she represent woman or woman should vote for her!

Just look at what she's believing in and check what Biden did for women rights then choose which one would represent and respect woman the better!

Laughable how liberals scream to the heavens to protect the right to slaughter babies in the womb while wanting to protect the sanctity of life for convicted criminals on death row out of the other side of their face.

    Liberal_Extinction
  •

Its laughable how you lump ALL women and Liberals into the same group. Its also laughable how conservatives ignore the OBVIOUS lies of their party just so that they can claim ONE victory against WOMEN!

    Your a fool.
