Black protestors heckle Obama at rally

Image...
Florida (AFP) — Around 20 African-Americans heckled Barack Obama at a rally here Friday, screaming chants and holding up placards accusing the White House hopeful of selling out the black community.

As the Democrat, who would be the first African-American US president, spoke, the protestors jumped up from their seats in a corner high up in the University of Miami's basketball arena. One of their signs said: "Barack Obama endorsed by KKK (Ku Klux Klan)."

Police and Secret Service agents intervened, as thousands of Obama supporters responded with boos and jeers. The protestors did not appear to resist as they were hustled out of the stadium.

"OK, let's get back to work," Obama said after the five-minute interruption, resuming a speech dominated by attacks on Republican rival John McCain's record on women's issues and the economy at a time of financial crisis.

If they have a problem with Obama, they should be respectful and, I dunno, honest about it? Obama backed by the KKK? Get real!

The only sell-outs of black people are dumb-ass nons like those protesters.

By their actions they're making black people out to be idiots in the mainstream stereotypes. Barack Obama and other intelligent black leaders are clearly breaking stereotypes.

Maybe they're worried they won't be able to complain about the white-man running the country anymore?

Someone probably paid them to do it.

This just goes to show that African-Americans are not a monolithic voting block. The Democratic Party needs to pay more attention to neglected groups of society and stop taking people for granted.

This is such an embarrassment. If a black person is a Republican then whatever, but to say Obama sold out is idiotic. He is running for president of the United States, not president of Black America.

Why do some black americans call other black people of high intelligence and speak properly sell outs? As soon as a person uses the english language properly or have professional jobs or power they are acting "white".

That is just dumb, you are basically calling yourselves every sterotype that pisses you off when other people say it...

Again you will always get opposition on the way up,but the real task is how you deal with it .He dealt with it smoothly, telling the crowd lets get back to work.Thats a leader and not a follower.

It is reasons like that the ignorance of some people that keep others down, and also makes other ignorant people look at it like that all people of the same ethnicity are just as stupid as the ones who did something. Why would they protest and hackle Obama, this is history in the making a change for the better of the African community.

This is another example of a Current.com double standard. When protesters were slamming the RNC all I heard from this website was "More power to them!" "Freedom of speech!!"

It's interesting that 15 responses into this thread I'm not hearing the same thing. Now I'm hearing that the protesters need to show respect! The protesters are ignorant!

Come on let's at least be consistent.

REALLY???? hmmm...what a disappointment...i guess they got caught up with the media..i wonder why they would they be into the media? All i can say..is that they, or any black community shall not or should not be discouraged by this opinion of the media...

Although I'm disappointed by the false suggestion that the KKK supports Barack Obama, I’m happy to know that Freedom of Speech is still honored at his rallies.

Yeah, I'm totally down for free speech, I honestly believe they have every right to say whatever they want, but I would argue with what these guys are saying. The debate is essential, keeping it all shut up isn't helping anything. Come on out and say what you think, but be willing to explain why the hell you think what you think. That's where some protesters stories fall apart, but not all by any means (usually no one bothers to ask).

What I have to say to these fools is what the hell do you want? You want him to stand up there and sound like a Black Panther? 1st off, I would be prepared to call him a corporate sell-out, but selling out his race? Why, because he's Harvard educated and wears suits, because he's running for the highest office in the nation? If you think that's selling out, then you're embracing all the very stereo-types that white rich guys have pegged to you from day one.

Racism still exists, and in a big way, but if you want to fight it, telling a person who represents your race (at least in the American public's perception) they're a sell-out for following their dreams doesn't seem like much of a tactic.

I don't know really, I'm just a white chick, but I'm still going to vote for him, even though I think he's selling out on energy and the environment. Politicians in our system have to sell out for an election to try and bring in the broadest voter base since we have a two-party system. I don't suppose that makes it right or even ok, but I'm sure as shit not voting for McCain and politics of fear and oppression.

Obama, while being Black, is wealthy. There is no way to be wealthy and be "street". The Wealthy rise to the top of any form of government. Don't you love how the TV tells us we are having an election?

Obama is not a sellout, but those people who interrupted are degenerates.

Here's some info on the people doing the protesting. I found it quite disturbing that a group like this could get so close to a presidential candidate, regardless of his party. Where's the Secret Service?

I thought black people only supported him because he was black

To think that black people can disagree with a black candidate

Maybe we are not a monolithic group motivated only by race? OMG is that possible.

As an African living in the US I don't get much love from some African Americans so I can definitely identify with that. For some reason because of the way I speak or behave I am not 'black enough'.

The only thing that Obama did was try and let them debate him in front of the LIVE audience and they weren't even riled up or educated on what they cared about enough to take him up on that opportunity. Maybe I will interupt him in Rado so I can debate him too!!! I thought he did the right thing... and what right minded african americans would really be behind the KKK anyway? I have seen black men who were blind support them, not one who can see. W T F ?

I guess if they were white protesors it would say "white protestors heckle..."? Or not? I don't get what their color has to do with it. I do not represent every "white" person nor does every "white" person represent me. GW is white and he certainly does not represent me. I just really wish we would get beyond the "my people" thing. We are all humans and we have our own groups that we resonate with and it does not have to be related to so called "race" (which does not really exist you know as we are all humans.)
