Dearborn and Allen Park police are accused of mistaking a diabetic man for a drunken driver and beating him to the point that he required surgery to remove part of his brain, according to a lawsuit filed by an attorney representing the man’s wife.

Pamela Griglen, 46, and her attorney Arnold Reed on Monday filed a federal lawsuit asking for $20 million in damages.

Griglen and Reed said Ernest Griglen was driving southbound on the Southfield Freeway on June 15 when he suffered a diabetic hypoglycemic episode that caused him to swerve between lanes.

Ernest was pulled over by Allen Park and Dearborn police who thought he was drunk and beat him in the head and face, Reed said.

“They began to hit him, punch him and throw him to the ground,” Reed said.

Ernest’s wife said her husband told her, “They beat me, Pam. They really beat me.”

However, two police reports offer differing details of the incident.

In one police report, Breathalyzer results listed prove Ernest was not drunk, but states police were chasing Ernest because of a domestic violence complaint. The report states he was pulled over after a short chase on the Southfield Freeway near Ford Road.

The other report states Ernest was “combative” and that officers were force to put him on the ground. The only injury listed on the report is that some blood was noticed to be trickling down Ernest’s nose.

But Reed said Ernest was taken to Oakwood Hospital where emergency brain surgery was performed that removed a part of Ernest’s brain. Reed added that the man has not been awake and has been on a ventilator since the incident.

Reed maintains Ernest had an insulin pump inserted in his stomach and that officers should have taken it as a sign to the truth behind Ernest’s behavior.

Ernest was also wearing a medical boot because he had just had an operation on his ankle.

Reed said although there is not police dash cam video of the incident, he does have witnesses who will be brought to court.

The director of public information for the city of Dearborn said the city has not yet been served with the lawsuit and would need to investigate the allegations in a responsible manner before commenting on the situation. She said the city’s best wishes go out to the family while they are dealing with such a serious medical condition.

The Allen Park police declined comment.

    • For the people who asked why he didn't take his shots - he already had TOO MUCH insulin coursing thru him, he needed to eat something and get some sugar/carbohydrates in him. I am not a nurse, but my husband and son are type 1 diabetics and I have witnessed "violent, drunken" behavior in both of them when this happens - and it can come on quickly.
I have a car with child safety locks in the back and more than once had to shove my son in the back and lock the doors and windows to get him to the hospital safely. (I am a 5' 2" 130 lb woman - my son is over 6' and weighs about 200 - it ain't easy!) Even with this - he was able to get the windows down enough and start pushing his clothing out the tiny crack at the top, arriving at the hospital in his undies once! The only good thing about it was that he doesn't recall any of it, he vaguely remembers making monkey noises at me.
Both my husband and son have lost jobs because they had these episodes at work, and the boss assumed they were drunk and fired them. My husband is gone now - complications of diabetes - and my son now has his under better control, but a hypoglycemic episode can happen from not eating enough, not getting enough sleep, too much activity, etc. and the people he works with now are aware that if they see him starting to act weird or drunk, make him eat!!!
I feel for the man who had this happen to him - I can't believe that the police are that clueless in this day and age. I think Westlake is correct - it's not enough for the problems they've just caused. Chances are, because diabetics don't heal very well after injury/surgery - they've just hastened this man's death.

    • totally right, right now it only take a high school diploma to be a police officer coming down from a high of having to have so many college hours.

20 million is only unreasonable because it is not enough that is a life long problem for that man and his family.

intoxicated or not police officer should be trained to the t in taking down a person with force and punches kicks and night sticks to the head is not the way they were trained to do it.

my biggest problem with this whole situation is they have dash cams for this reason and this reason only, not to mention speakers on the collar non of this can be displayed in court you are totally right DRAWK some ones lying and it is the people you are taking up for

    • if an IQ minimum for cops were to be implemented, there would be alot more 'people' out of the job right now.

    • Beating up colored people, now people with medical problems. Geez!!! Next it would be anyone.

I would definitely make this nationally known. I would call up every major news station, and want to have a change in the law-enforcement.

I don't even feel safe anymore.

    • Has anyone ever read any of J_Jammers comments where he has made a reasonable point?

Please message me if you can think of a single example of J_Jammer being worth the weight of the key board that he types on.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever really agreed with him. He's awfully abrasive and it seems he likes to argue only for the sake of argument. Seems like a conservative republican that can actually write (but a conservative republican, nonetheless).

He may be right that there's not enough information, but for God's sake. This diabetic got part of his brain removed!

    • ARRRG!
a similar situation with my father happened, he's disabled and has had 8 spine surgeries.
he was out 6 am to walk to the store and sat down for a minute on the sidewalk because his back hurt and there were no benches on the street. police came up to him and started harassing him, poking him in the chest and tried to instigate him into a confrontation. they said he was 'coked up' and sent him away in a EMT to the hospital against his will.
He was IN a LOT of pain is all!
i spent all day walking around his neighborhood trying to find him!
i finally checked his voicemail and found out a doctor called his voicemail (lucky he left his phone home) and said what hospital he was at.
he was under all sorts of medicine and was totally out of it when i finally got there. he had no clue where he was ! ! !

for GOD's sake, what the hell is happening on this planet!!!!!!

They should have test that would be able to tell them who has what...like simple test. Of course there could be an error with a simple test, but at least it wouldn't be a horrible error.

Even if they were a junkie should not a hospital want to give help if that is what the person is requesting?

The Hospital that ER is modeled after had a test that would predict (I believe) 85% of the time if someone was going to have a heart attack or not based on a few simple questions and test. It moved people along quickly so that they could get to those that actually really need help and to keep from ignoring the ones that were potentially going to have a heart attack. This is based on people having symptoms prior to an attack and those symptoms are sometimes similar to other things that are not nearly as deadly so it was to weed through them and find the ones that were high risk.

You're right, there should have been a simple way to tell he was sick. However, the hospital staff made a snap judgment based on his appearance and therefore felt no tests were necessary.

    • You'd think the police would have received proper training on how to decipher the differences between medical problems and alcohol/drug influence.

    • 20 Million?

Hell no....I didn't read a single thing that makes that number reasonable. I read a lot that makes it excessive.

I agree, even if someone were drunk beating them isn't acceptable. Neither is it acceptable to lie. Someone is lying....everyone is quick to state the police are, but how can there be such a conflicting story of what happened?

The police state that he had been domestically abusive. The lawyer for the man who is not awake at this moment...did not decline that story's account. Maybe she was not asked. But still I want to know her reply to that. If that is the case then I have a little less sympathy for his plight than I did before I read the whole article.

      Who are these witnesses?

I think sometimes it's good to state that for the article to look more creditable, as is having your client in the hospital.

Was he in there for the attack or because he didn't get his shot in time? I didn't read where it stated he was beaten into unconsciousness. Not even his lawyer was quoted stating that.

There's not enough information on this....

Though I think they should have been aware of his situation first hand. And that should have been the case if it really were a domestic dispute....wouldn't the wife state he was a diabetic? Unless she didn't care or it slipped her mind.

I have a friend and an aunt who are diabetic and I have seen one of them in shock and it's just scary. Why did the man not give himself a shot when he was suppose to? Was he in a high speed chase that made it impossible to remember that he had to get a shot...pull over and do so? My aunt and friend make sure they get their shots on time and eat on time....so if he isn't very good at keeping up with his treatment of his illness I don't think expecting others to pick up the slack for you is a worthy defense .

    • If this is true the cops should be fired and not allowed to be police ever again. But you know they will just get a slap on the wrist.

    • Another testiment to the violation of the authorities on human beings. That wasn't even called for, beat a man to the point where part of his brains have to be removed. Those two officers need to be taken to task.

    • Compensation should be that, if he recovers, he should be permitted to tazer any pig he wishes to, for any duration, for the rest of his life.
