Designer vagina trend 'worrying'

A leading urogynaecologist has spoken out against the growing popularity of cosmetic vaginal surgery.

Professor Linda Cardozo, of King's College Hospital, London, says little evidence exists to advise women on the safety or effectiveness of procedures.

These include operations to make the external appearance more "attractive" and reshaping the vagina to counter laxity after childbirth, for example.

Professor Cardozo said the most established vaginal cosmetic procedure was reduction labioplasty - a procedure to make the labia smaller - which is requested by women either for aesthetic reasons or to alleviate physical discomfort.

"Women want to emulate the supermodel. It's part of a trend. But they should know that all surgery can be risky.

"Most of the procedures are done in the private sector and it's totally unregulated."

And there was little evidence that "vaginal rejuvenation" - the surgical repair of vaginal laxity, with a price tag of about £3,000 - improved symptoms and was any better than doing simple pelvic floor muscle exercises.

In her presentation at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists 7th International Scientific Meeting, Professor Cardozo said: "Cosmetic vaginal procedures raise a number of serious ethical questions.

"Women are paying large sums of money for this type of surgery which may improve the appearance of their genitalia but there is no evidence that it improves function."

WHAT are you TALKING about?! This is nothing like abortion #1 and #2 you can't have THAT procedure after the first trimester. You aren't the brightest crayon in the box are you. Not to mention a perv.

    • From a man’s view, I prefer the larger floppy labia after child birth. For oral sex it’s great, more to flop around in my mouth and it gets my wife off as well!!!

Thanks for that...mom's everywhere feel a little bit better!! And you're right about the getting off part. Why would you want to cut off something that feels good when it is touched, licked, sucked...well you get the idea.

    • This is insane... I am not generally opposed to plastic surgery, hey whatever floats your boat.... But the vagiplasty is rediculous...

I saw this marketed as part of a mothers day package... boob lift, liposuction, vagi tightening, and tummy tuck... choose any two for one low price... Maybe we should just outlaw childbirth since we seem to live in a society that hates most things having to do with motherhood. Yeah, we could all get mail order kids from overseas or crop up a bunch of domestic baby farms...

    • having cosmetic surgery is about making your body prettier to yourself or for other people that has nothing to do with how "functional" the outcome may be.

thats like saying, "why get a nose job? you wont be able to smell any better."

    • I think the rise in va-jay-jay surgery has to be something to do with the shaved, often quite childlike 'perfect' labia of porn actresses - like never before there's an 'ideal' vagina (like there was an ideal pair of breasts when breast enhancements became fashionable) and women feel imperfect in comparison, especially if they've had kids. It's exhausting for our bodies to be constantly under scrutiny.

Be brave ladies, and face life in your natural body. You shouldn't change for anyone.

    • What is it with butchering the virgina? As many have already said, Live with what your born with. There`s someone for everyone. For goodness sake, there`s no need for these rediculous extremes. A man will love you for what you are when you find the right one. Better to have great natural sex than fake it for appearance sake.

    • I work in a nursing home and see so many elderly women that have had their genitalia MUTILATED whether due to male-dominated religious extremists or because of some overzealous surgeon during an antiquated hysterectomy procedure. Vaginas are our toys and tools and means of self-exploration, whether from God or the Universal energies or simple genetic evolution. Wake up people, love your body while its yours; use it. Let it look like you loved and lived with it too!

    • Good grief! When will people just be happy with what they've got huh? It astounds me that a REAL doctor would do this procedure anyway. What about HEALTH issues? Revamping the makings of nature has never been a good call and never will be. Cripes, just deal with it already!

    • Girls can be cruel, even siblings when your body is different. Its understandable that some women would want the surgery, their scared of what people would think. They should know that they are beautiful and someone is going to like them without the surgical relief.

    • In my experience the difference between a good vagina and a better vagina is entirely due to the ATTITUDE of the owner and has nothing to do with appearance. If a woman enjoys her body and knows what to do do with it, that's good enough in my book.

And I am left with the question "who's looking?'

My suggestion is that one could buy a lot of really sexy panties for 3000 #'s.

    • I can understand how a woman might want to have some reconstructive surgery after giving birth- say you get torn really bad or something. But just for fun? NO WAY! That would not be fun to recover from, it would not be fun to pay for, and for what? A smaller labia? There's no need for that. Plus, if you're worried about what your man thinks of your vagina, it's not the vagina's problem, it's the MAN's problem!

how true how true! AND there is a whole "fit each other" thing. Everyone is different and some people will fit together better than others. I could date a guy and it just not physically be as great as say another woman dating the same guy.

Shit, if a guy ever told me my "labia was too big" I'd tell him it wouldnt be an issue if he started taking male enhancers! HAHA.

It is very sad that the world forces women to be unhappy with every little detail... from their nose to their poon.

    • Really I don't understand why people care so much about why others are getting surgeries. I can't count on one hand anymore how many friends of mine have fake boobs. You want to redesign your vagina thats up to you. It's their money, it's important to them, move on.

Side bar: I wonder if anyone would give a shit if a guy decided to have some surgery on his cock? Why is it that female sexuality seems to constantly be this sacred, untouchable thing?

    • PWNtheVOTE:

Precisely because in society women's bodies are NOT sacred. They're constantly under attack, so commodified and so public, never good enough and always apparently in need of improvement. Everyone's body should be sacred, and it should be no-one's duty to 'improve' it for someone else's sake.

    • i dint know about you, but the fatter they are the better, i agree with homie up there! they are SUPER HOTTTTT when they are FAT!!!

unless you are getting a lot of traffic down there, how does it become an issue? i mean, ive seen porn chicks, and they all look good from behind. Not to be nasty, but maybe if more women looked at how they look bent over, maybe they would appreciate it more. because when they are bent over and all that fatness just sits there like one of those old coin pouches from the early 80's? I mean i fall instantly in love!

this must be something that only white women do!!!

    • it is a free country so ladies do whatever is self-gratifying for you. But I'd advise to stay true to your own naturally given poons. I doubt supermodel poons are any super than anyone else's.

    • Leave it to our commercially driven society to keep raising the bar on self-acceptance & turn it into a business. It just seems wherever there's an opening, someone's right there to fill it.

    • on one hand, yeah if it makes you feel better about yourself for yourself, then by all means, go for it...who are the rest of us to judge? Especially guys. However, if it is unhealthy or may cause you to be unhealthy, then think first. Don't get sick for this. Especially if you are doing it for someone else....You are you and you're great. If someone doesn't think so, oh well. Let Em go! Take care of yourself for you.

    • Cosmetic surgery, especially on areas that can't be seen in public, causes two reactions in me. One is: do whatever you want - it's a free country. And two is: stop being so self absorbed, grow up and get a life.

"Vaginal rejuvenation" falls into the second category...

    • "Women want to emulate the supermodel."

Even when it comes to their vaginae? Really? And how would you even know what condition a supermodel's vagina is in? Sure, their bodies resemble those of prepubescent girls, but that doesn't necessarily mean their vaginae do as well. As a matter of fact, I'd wager that, on average, their vaginae are as tore up as anyone else's, if not more so.
      Embrace who you are. ;)

Maybe it's a girl thing. We just dont read all the fashion mags, do we?

Maybe there are supermodels that us guys just don't know about, and there is a salon in Milan or Paris or somewhere for pubic coiffure. With runways for the models to strut their stuff.

      Just sayin'

Im a female and I like my naughty bits the way they are. Beside you are right with supermodels. They actually say the thinner they are the looser they are. I forget where I read it but I'll try and find it.

I find this as silly as male enhancement.

    • Instead of stigmatising these surgeries even more so that they are done in secret and without strict guidelines, it would make more sense to talk openly about them despite the fact that they are slightly bizarre.

    • It's only worrying to me if this kind of thing becomes the norm, rather than for a very few people who are judged to medically need it.
