Chef dies after eating 'superhot' chilli for bet

Image...
An amateur chef died the day after eating a "superhot" chilli in a bet with his friend over who could make the hottest dish, an inquest heard.

Andrew Lee, 33, suffered heart failure the morning after he ate the chilli.

Toxicology tests are now being carried out to see if the fork lift truck driver suffered a fatal reaction to the dish or whether anything else contributed to his death.

Mr Lee, of Edlington, Doncaster was apparently in perfect health and had just passed a medical at work, the opening of the Doncaster hearing was told.

Cooking was one of his main interests and he went to his girlfriend Samantha Bailey's house to make a chilli.

His father John Lee told the inquest: "He had a bet with Samantha's brother who could make the hottest chilli then went back to her house to stay."

Mother-of-four Miss Bailey called the emergency services to her home nine days ago.

Police officers were called to the house after receiving reports of a man suffering a cardiac arrest and Mr Lee was found lying on the floor.

Paramedics failed to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A full post-mortem examination is underway and further inquiries are being carried out.

Deputy Doncaster coroner Fred Curtis granted a burial order and adjourned the inquest for further evidence.

HAHA! Im not laughing at your trauma its just we think we can take something like that and win.

I know my limits and when it starts getting so hot I can't breath...get a glass and fill it 1/2 milk and the other 1/2 beer. Whatever it takes to stop the pain!

Damn that's one sad story. A few years back I mistakenly ate a Scotch Bonnet with some chicken at a BBQ in Clapton, North London - my tolerance is so low i started hallucinating. I too thought i was going to die!

I LOVE hot peppers. But not enough to eat one that could kill me!

I'd very much like to know what kind of peppers were used. Habanero is the hottest from what I understand.

Ya, i think habenero's are the hottest. Too bad they are so darn cute, i thought they were mini bell peppers. It felt like a black hole was sucking the enamel off my teeth.

Nope, Naga Jolokia is the hottest. Red Savina Habanero is second, and regular habanero comes in third, among others.

Hottest peppers I've ever heard of were grown in the jungle primeval by the inmates of a Guatemalan insane asylum.

The more I read about this, the more I want to see if I can locate the recipe. I want to try it. I will bet all of you I can eat it and not die.

This goes down in stupid deaths, one notch below bungee jumping, and one above drag racing death.

Its kind of odd that he died the following morning....youd think he wouldved realized something was up and gone to ER before that happened.

On the subject of spicy tho....theres an amazing sushi place in Capitola CA called Paradise Sushi and they have a roll called the Satan Roll that is so spicy you have to sign a waiver in case of injury. Ive eaten it 3 times and depending on the chef it has varied in intensity....however the most powerful time caused me to hallucinate from lack of oxygen heh.

The only cure, green tea ice cream! The sugar and the milk work wonders to cool the burn.

Wow never really thought it could happen, dieing from eating spice food.
Though I thought that if some one did die like that their intestines would melt or their stomach would explode. Cardiac arrest seems a bit anti climatic.

I'm just so intrigued with a dish that MIGHT kill you. I just want to eat a spoonful and then go from there. Is it good enough to go ahead and eat a full bowl or should I stop with the spoon?
