Animal free!

The escalating costs of corn and soybeans and the current credit crunch are forcing widespread cutbacks in the number of animals raised for food.

For the animals and caring consumers, such cuts are long overdue.

The 10 billion animals killed for food in the U.S. each year are caged and crowded, deprived and drugged, manhandled and mutilated. At the slaughterhouse, they may be scalded, bled, skinned and dismembered, while still conscious. Although 93 percent of consumers condemn such abuses, no law prevents them.

On Oct. 2 (Gandhi’s birthday), 400 communities in all 50 states and two dozen other countries observe World Farm Animals Day with public education events (see www.WFAD.org.) The purpose is to expose and memorialize the cruel treatment of animals raised for food and to promote an animal-free diet.

It’s a great opportunity for each of us to embrace a cruelty-free, healthful, cost-saving, plant-based diet.

    • great article! I know what you mean. I've also done a similar story. It's about Vegan Soul Food, Vegan Pizza, and the whole Vegan movement in the Bay Area. Please check it out & lemme know what you think. I've uploaded it & i think it's now part of my profile.

just in case, here's the link

    • 'Animal Free' - hmm. I wonder; if animals aren't raised for food, what happens to their species? Oh, wait. The animal rights industry has already said it has no problem with animals going extinct.

Whether anyone likes it or not, we are meant to have animal protein in our diets. Humans do not do well physically, for the long term, on vegan diets. There has never been even one vegan society that lasted for an appreciable period of time. Why? Biology. That's why a sick woman feels better after eating fish. For those who get sick eating meat - people suffering from starvation can't eat hamburgers immediately upon being rescued, either.

The stories below are very unusual, but do illustrate the point that veganism is not healthy for humans. If you choose to go that route, more power to you. But please: do your research, and do not foist it on your children. Check the dates: these are all fairly recent stories:

    • I hope I never develope an allergy to the beloved soy bean. I have been a vegan for almost three years but I have been a vegetarian sence forever it seems. I am sorry for your loss of the best bean ever! People really don't realize how much meat they really eat or really need. It's very depressing to know that all the money that goes into the meat industry just goes down the drian and I could use that money for my family to eat healthier vegan foods. But the vegan market is expensive besides organic fruits and veggies. Maybe one day people will realize that they are brainwahsed and stop eating meat for the human race to survive the next few hundered years.

    • these are exactly the 'absolute' ideals i once conformed to...

Sadly, i have developed an allergy to soy and am lactose intolerant... These circumstances hit me after 11 years of being flesh free. The last thing that has entered my mouth, or taste buds for mere taste satisfaction is any type of living animal. I have no interest in meat after so long, i forget what it tastes like, and regurgitate it on the occasional restaurant accident...

These ideals I live for and am passionate about, but i canNOT argue with the fact that after being a woman, developing an allergy to soy after 10 years veg, i had my period for 3 weeks, and was sick with the flu for 2 months. I finally caved...

I started eating fish once a week.

My sickness left after 3 days, and my period ceased after half a week.

I can't say that I'm happy with what provoked the results, it goes against everything i believe in/stood for, but...

at least my carbon foot print of 11 years vegetarian does more justice than my 3 weeks eating fish...

    • I went Vegetarian 18 yrs ago, and I've been Vegan for the last 10 or so, It's amazing how much it improves your life. But people have been programmed to think humans will die without meat.Truth is of course, the human body is not cut out for properly digesting meat and dairy. If more people knew the conditions their meat was prepared in they would be ill from the thought alone.

actually its also a misconception that meat is bad for you. any nutritionist will tell you that. Im not saying you have to eat meat. I havent for two years and drink soy milk rather than cow or goat...

but its very soapboxy of vegetarians and vegans when they sit there and proclaim that their way of life is better. I don't eat red meat or poultry or pork because I personally feel better by not eating it. I dont feel as bloated after a meal. BUT I know plenty of people who enjoy eating meat or chicken or whatever and don't feel sick or full afterward.

we have already had someone on here admit that have lived your way of life and became sick that way.

The bottom line? Its a personal choice. PERIOD. If you want to eat meat then eat meat, if you don't then don't. Realistically its all moderation. Everything in moderation. Don't eat too much meat. Don't eat too much soy. PORTION CONTROL. Eat a natural balance of everything and you will be healthy.

I love my way of eating. Its right for me. But I really don't like when someone tries to pass the dietary decision off as THE only way to eat.

    • Bian - I haven't eaten meat in two years. I stopped 10 years ago as well and then started again.

I'll always eat fish. I love sushi.

Realistically I have a rule: If it becomes a chore, its not worth it

    • I am one year in with no red meat, pork, or poultry. I still eat fish, but I am working on it. Factory farming is horrible, and one of the reasons I stopped eating chicken, beef, and pork.

    • Pork was very tasty, but I don't miss ingesting corpses.

I refused to continue making my body a tomb and I feel mentally and physically healthier for it.

I am the same way. I felt so much healthier when I stopped eating meat. And I dont feel all high and mighty because of it, I literally just felt physically better! My work outs are better, i don't feel lethargic after a meal, I don't feel bloated. Its wonderful.

I still eat fish but its all just personal choices.

Stephen, I love fish. Period. Im not saying this about you personally but most of my friends are "meatatarians" (the joke thanks to the lovely fast food commercial... yes, they eat veggies) and have a very poor outlook toward most vegetarians for this reason.

I'm not going to watch you eat something and sit there telling you how gross it is. It's just plain rude. There is no right or wrong in this matter... its personal choice.

Now, are we talking about pollution in the oceans? That state? Well... that affects everything. Not just fish. Soy, Veggies, etc. Condensation from the ocean goes up in the air and rains down on the food you've deemed acceptable. Plants absorb it and voila. Same problem.

Are people against fish because it would hurt them? Fish are lacking the section of the brain that recognizes pain in the sense that we recognize pain or other animals (specifically mammals) recognize pain. Yes they "feel," but its more of a sense of pressure. They feel vibrations in the water and the only reason they know if they have been hooked is not because the hook has gone through their mouth but because they feel the tight pressure of someone pulling against them.

I understand mercury levels. I actually keep a card in my wallet because people are under the misconeption that it is only Tuna (ahi, yellowfin, bigeye, canned albacore even) that affects you. I know that's wrong. Grouper, Marlin (not that I eat that one.. it is overfished and not to my taste anyway), swordfish (same as marlin...overfished and not to my taste), Seabass, Bass, Halibut, Lobster, Mahi Mahi, Trout (sea), Monkfish, Snapper... I could go on. I know these fish have high to medium mercury levels and should be eaten on the occassion rather than regularly. I know some Salmon may contain PCBs. Trust me. I do know all of this. I am very concerned about my personal well being. But its called everything in moderation.

And if you walk around afraid to touch something because "the state of....." then you're screwed. You may as well stop breathing or go buy and oxygen tank and walk around with that because of the pollution in the air. Stop eating farm grown veggies and start growing your own - only used filtered water to water them too in a greenhouse because well... you know there could be chemicals and pollution in the water and air and soil. Do you KNOW how soy is made? It's actually kinda gross. Tempe basically sits there and is allowed to mold. I mean its basically mold and fungus. Well at least those soy products you probably love so much... so better stop eating that too.

Boil your water before you drink it. Better be safe.

I know, im being extreme but you get the point im sure. I'm not going to stop enjoying life and food. I am a foodie. I love food. I'll weird my family out because i'll pop a raw brussle sprout into my mouth without thinking twice. I don't use salad dressing - i want to appreciate the true flavor of the veggies. Thats just me though.

You don't have to eat anything you don't want to.
