Shock: cannabis is 'safer than alcohol and cigarettes'

According to a new report, not from the School of No Brainers, but from the Beckley Foundation's Global Cannabis Commission, smoking fatties is less harmful than drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes. They claim that the banning the herb has "backfired" and that there needs to be a "serious rethink" of the UK drugs policy.
"Although cannabis can have a negative impact on health, including mental health, in terms of relative harms it is considerably less harmful than alcohol or tobacco," the report claims.
"Historically there have only been two deaths worldwide attributed to cannabis, whereas alcohol and tobacco together are responsible for an estimated 150,000 deaths per annum in the UK alone."
NB. "Shock" is used in the most sarcastic way possible... :D

people don't need to keep stating that they've felt a certain way about the lagality of selling/possessing pot. no one cares how long someone has felt about the topic. what we need to do is get together and make a change. pot is easily grown and harvested and, therefore, the only reason it is illegal is because the government cannot tax it when it is being illegally grown and sold. make it legal and growers pay a tax with no fear of prosecution - while undercutting the going illegal rate. a big economic boost and a much more rational society with much less violence and hopefully, one day, a president voted into office by a people who truely care about the course this country takes in history. The selfishness would significantly decrease and a selfless, humanitarian society could be born.

I hope this helps:
"Myth: Marijuana Kills Brain Cells. Used over time, marijuana permanently alters brain structure and function, causing memory loss, cognitive impairment, personality deterioration, and reduced productivity.
Fact: None of the medical tests currently used to detect brain damage in humans have found harm from marijuana, even from long term high-dose use. An early study reported brain damage in rhesus monkeys after six months exposure to high concentrations of marijuana smoke. In a recent, more carefully conducted study, researchers found no evidence of brain abnormality in monkeys that were forced to inhale the equivalent of four to five marijuana cigarettes every day for a year. The claim that marijuana kills brain cells is based on a speculative report dating back a quarter of a century that has never been supported by any scientific study."
http://www.drugpolicy.org/marijuana/factsmyths/#brainNORML and Playboy had to file lawsuits in order to get the full study released to the public so that the methodology of the experiment could be examined.
"As reported in Playboy, the Heath 'Voodoo' Research methodology involved strapping Rhesus monkeys into a chair and pumping them with equivalent of 63 Colombian strength joints in 'five minutes, through gas masks,' losing no smoke. Playboy discovered that Heath had administered 63 joints in five minutes over just three months instead of administering 30 joints per day over a one-year period as he had first reported. Heath did this, it turned out, in order to avoid having to pay an assistant's wages every day for a full year.
The monkeys were suffocating! Three to five minutes of oxygen deprivation causes brain damage 'dead brain cells.' (Red Cross Lifesaving and Water Safety Manual) With the concentration of smoke used, the monkeys were a bit like a person running the engine of a car in a locked garage for 5, 10, 15 minutes at a time every day!
The Heath Monkey study was actually a study in animal asphyxiation and carbon monoxide poisoning."
You can read more about those experiments in Chapter 15 of Jack Herer's "The Emperor Wears No Clothes".

This is some thing we all new for years one day i am sure it will be legal and the use of this drug wont be frowned up on.
But then again there are so many different types of people that use this drug its hard to do the wright thing as some retarded person is going to do some thing stupid and blame it on smoking weed and ruin it for the rest of us.
But i can only hope that one day their will be coffee shops every where and we can all go for a nice relaxing smoke with out the fear of getting busted.

I think everyone should do some research on the benefits of medicinal marijuana. Those who are making allegations of marijuana destroying or even taking lives are simply not true. I'm sure there were other factors involved in each instance.
On another note in regards to NATURAL supplements; Shrooms are now being tested to help those who suffer from Turrets Syndrome. It is so new and pretty much un-heard of that we do not enough about it yet, but it is in the works. It's quite interesting.

Weed is so not a gateway drug. My Friend who is now in rehab started using cocaine when she was 10! she found weed 2 years after that after getting hooked to heroin, crack, meth, and cocaine. The only reason she would smoke weed was so she could get off the high of the other drugs.

I don't think society deems cannabis "physically" harmful as in its fatal potential. The real harm perhaps is its long term implementation in altering people's brains and lungs for the worst. The only reason alcohol is more tolerable is because it doesn't change brain chemistry nearly as much as cannabis.

Reminds me of the report from the UK's Police Foundation back in 1999:
"21... When cannabis is systematically compared with other drugs against the main criteria of harm (mortality, morbidity, toxicity, addictiveness and relationship with crime), it is less harmful to the individual and society than any of the other major illicit drugs or than alcohol and tobacco. This is why our consideration of the relative harmfulness of drugs has led us to the conclusion that cannabis is wrongly placed in Class B of Schedule 2 to the MDA."

Everything in moderation. I just found in my studies, that too much refined sugar can be harmful and interfere with metabolism and vitamin uptake and can contribute to obesity, acne, vitamin A and E deficiency and high cholesterol leading to arteriosclerosis and death, who is banning all this sugar incl, high fructose corn syrup (worse). So keep drinking, smoking cigarettes eating and die. But marijuana is dangerous. Riiight.

Cannabis is love.(period)
The United States war on drugs is not real! Sure all the "underlings" might think they are working for a good cause; busting those evil dopers but...they're just helping to recirculate the "evidence". The CIA sells crack to Harlem, Compton, and Watts to name a few. Marijuana isn't a drug, it's a plant. As for those two deaths(wiki sourced; so i can't give it too much credit) occurred in the same case involving two gentlemen, a very very small crawlspace, and a cone or two. They died of smoke poisoning due to very poor ventilation aka world's smallest "hotbox". I still find it hard to believe with things like the gas mask that allow high volumes of smoke to linger in a small enclosed space while the recipient breathes away.
How can some thing like alcohol and tobacco be legal if they kill much more than this Controlled Substance? perhaps it's because Marijuana is a teacher, and the government doesn't like you learning anything not shoved down your throat by the Education system.
So do your self a favor, roll one up and go on a hike...life's better that way. - 1 year ago

like the response (why safer?) well my answer to this would be that in some cases glass has been added to weaker types of cannabis to make it look like a stronger version so they can get more money for it this is very harsh. you can check the strength by looking at the size of the THC particles through a magnifying glass. in some cases asbestos has also been used. like it or not people will do it legal or not make it legal then this will not happen. As the guy in the earlier response said alcohol has worse repercussions violence death and so on. weed just chills you out so much safer than other legal drugs like it or not beer is a drug just a legal one not necessarily the safest.

If any one knows anything about American prohibition in 1920 to the 1933 then surly that's proof enough that prohibiting things just makes things worse it paves the way for more crime lords IE Alcapone along with over famous mobsters. it also created a massive depression. Once prohibition was abolished things started to look up again you only have to look at Amsterdam. It has a lower heroine problem than most parts of Europe if not all and since weed is legal there chances are people may have cut down on the harsher drugs. lets face it, its easier than going down the illegal root. it is also safer for customers who smoke weed due to the fact that its produced by a company and not by some seedy drug dealer. sorry about the little rant lol

I was going to make a similar point. The fact is, if we ever did legalize, I'm sure the government would come up with a list of stipulations. The fairest way is similar to Canada; Legal to possess, I'm not sure what there laws are in terms of growing, but that should be another one. The only thing that should be illegal is the distribution.

Welcome to the war against drugs scam !
The criminalization of pot is simply needed to fill the prisons & rationalize the private incarceration system… & they get to destroy the black community as a bonus… Business as usual !
In the USA, the prison system is owned by private corporations (i), meaning that companies make money from putting people in jail. This explains why America has the largest absolute prison population in the world (ii). Not just relative to its 300m population, but relative to the world. Even communist China, with 1.3 billion people, has less people in prison than America. US police officers are fired or given demotions if they do not meet a certain quota of people put in jail (iii). It’s called the prison-industrial complex (iv), and is just one example of how capitalism is yielding negative effects in America.
So how are so many people being put in prison? Welcome to the drug war. The CIA ships in cocaine to the United States in mass (v), and then uses the corrupt police force to deal these illegal drugs to the American public (vi). Naturally, having dealt the drugs, the police then know who is in possession of cocaine, so later bust them for it. Not only is the drug-industrial complex served, but so is the prison-industrial complex. Classic corporatism all made possible through the corrupt police force of bully-mentality. And if by now you’re saying, “well, just because people are selling drugs, doesn’t mean the kids are forced to buy them”, consider the glorification of drugs in movies and television. Young kids love listening to Amy Winehouse and others (vii) (viii), but there is no age limit on how old you have to be to watch her on the news, boxed into the classic drug nightmare of so many poor victims of the entertainment industry. The average lifespan in the United States is currently 78 (ix) and expected to be commonly as high as 100 in the coming generations (x), yet in the entertainment industry was just over 60 in 1999 and was as low as 48 in 1950 (xi). Also consider the abomination that is America’s education system (xii), and its up-to and in some cases above 50% high school dropout rates (xiii).

And they think this is going to make a difference to P.M. Brown who regurgitates crap facts like cannabis causes psychosis and whose got Bush's hand up his back? The facts for the safer argument are spewed everyday, even here in the U.S., trust me. Obviously lawmakers don't care about the health of their constituents.

I bet anything that the legalization and taxation on herb would get us on our way out of our deficit in a matter of 10-15 years. In addition, you would have less arrest stemming from possession, and a less overcrowding of the prisons. It's funny we are the ones who get high, but can put 2 and 2 together and come to the above conclusion.

i think it's interesting that after all the time, effort and money put into the legislation of illegalizing a natural herbal supplement, if you will, now all of a sudden somebody is realizing(or admitting) that it really isn't such a bad idea to legalize cannabis. does anybody remember the prohibition? all that did was create a gateway for more crime and corruption, and it didn't last all that long. if the sale, exchange, posession, and use of cannabis were legal, yeah the court system probably wouldn't generate as much revenue for all the violations, but you know damn well they would tax the heck out of it to make up the difference... so, providing that someone may go to the local market, get GOOD marijuana, and enjoy.... this is the best idea since sliced bread.

Actually the system would save billions of dollars a year in incarceration costs on marijuana cases so they wouldn't lose profit from violations, they would make money.
Then again, that's why it's more likely they will decriminalize instead of legalize, so they can still say it's bad and make money off it at the same time.

im not shocked a bit, and actually ive been standing on that soapbox for years. cigarette's and their addatives and frequent intake, alcohol's massive motor-skill and judgement depletion and liver errosion. pot's buzz is controllable and unless you have the sole intention of smoking your entire bag, you dont do it that often. of course theres the side effects of short-term memory and motivation loss. Some say that pot intensifies depression symptoms, but this symptom i believe is different from person to person, i know its not true in my case, but for others it may be true. Legalize and tax it so i can grow it and fix the deficit!

Now I'm not positive, but I believe the name weed simply comes from the fact that many strains grow like weeds. They grow anywhere at any time and pop up without anyone having to take care of them. Sounds like an easy crop to grow, huh?

His point is valid though. I'm not saying that marijuana is as harmful as any other "drug" because it's obviously not.
But the main problem with drug prohibition is that people are not educated. People still think that pot and cocaine and acid are all one level. If we increase awareness we can stop all this bull shit.
I may have twisted your point a little bit, but that's what came to mind when I read it.

definition of a toxin "A toxin (Greek: , toxikon) is a poisonous substance produced by living cells or organisms."
Tobacco is toxic.
Cannabis is not toxic nor does it contain anything that is bad for you. The only thing that is slightly bad for you is inhaling heated plant matter into your lungs but thats not the only way.

Hmm, while I agree it may be safer in moderation, the four people that I know that smoke weed really heavily, pretty much constantly all ended up with mental health issues. This wasn't "a few joints a day" material, though, this was constant bongs/buckets all day long for years. Some of those guys ended up in worse shape than most of the hard drinkers I know.

Anyone that does ANYTHING compulsively like that has addiction and mental health issues, so in your friends' case, weed just happened to be the vessel through which that aspect of their personality manifested itself. It is unfortunate, but there are no doubt much worse they could have formed addictions to.

I agree with most of these comments - but this one made me chuckle - I like the way it was put. Its what was running through my mind - so what's new about this - and yet - its still illegal - fyi - I was born at the end of 1934 - nearly 74 years ago - and still its illegal - I'm wondering now if it was legal the day I was born - or not - like when my mother was born, 1912, there was no income tax on wages - no vote for women - was it legal then - possibly. Also, I've heard the name Axel Rose - but I don't know who that is - I feel he is connected to music in some way - interesting name - of course, maybe it isn't just one person but a group - can someone help me out with this?

mostly the beginning of prohibition can be contribute to blatant racism against blacks and mexicans who were associated with the "drug". Calling it a drug is kinda misleading, it's a plant with psychedelic effects. Hard drugs are the ones they sell in drug stores to counteract things such as bipolar disorder or other problems. And those can be very dangerous.

Even more recent than that Nixon started the "War on Drugs" as a way of diverting attention from the Vietnam war. the Vietnam war protesters also generally loved smokin' weed and as you probably know people who smoke weed don't like war so Nixon thought to himself "how can I stop the protests from going on? I know! I'll arrest them for smoking weed" and thats how the war on drugs started up again.

Been saying this for YEARS. I didn't know there were 2 deaths directly contributed to cannabis though. I thought there weren't any recorded deaths in relation to cannabis use.
I'll wait for the naysayers of legalizing weed to come in here and say this is "bullshit" and that weed is a "dangerous gateway drug" that must be kept illegal to "keep our children safe". Or whatever insane reasoning they come up with.

Yea, and its actually NOT that detrimental to mental health - I don't want to quote anything directly because I can't remember (HAHAHA) the exact stats but there were studied done that showed there was minimal, if any damage done and it was all reversible.
AND as far as lung capacity - it just all depends on how you smoke it. Shoot- use a vaporizor and the damage to your respiratory system is next to nill. In a 30 day period where a guy HAD to smoke nonstop I believe her had a 1 or 2% difference from when he didn't smoke anything (he was at 92% efficiency after smoking nonstop for 30 days).
