Real Time comedian Bill Maher and Borat director Larry Charles are men on a mission: to destroy society's blind faith in God. The medium they chose to convey their doctrine is not a dusty old book, but an entertaining documentary which highlights the ridiculous aspects of religion, hence its name, Religulous. In an effort to spread their brand of enlightenment, Charles and Maher embarked on a romp around the world, questioning religious beliefs in the places they began and the palaces they paid for. The duo returned from their three-month pilgrimage with oodles of often-funny footage, much of it shot guerrilla-style as with Borat. Stringing interviews together with biting commentary and incisive footnotes, (to quote Kazakhstan's most famous fake export) they present their "cultural learnings" which they ultimately hope may "make benefit" of our "glorious" globe.
I chatted with Charles, who mastered absurdity while working on Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and took the opportunity to challenge a few beliefs of his own.

I just saw this movie Religulous. I thought it was excellent! It really shows how ignorant organized religious people are and that they generally don't know what it is wholly that they are worshiping. Hilariously scary! You don't need ancient texts to know what is right and what is wrong, but you sure can learn what is wrong from them.

wow, umm, what is your point? There's documented proof that Rome was full of bastards who killed for sport. There isn't a whole lot of documentation that proves Jesus of Nazareth was a real living person, and not a construct of a population pushed to the edge emotionally, physically and spiritually. So again, what was your post's point?

Religion is whatever gets you through the day, whatever makes you want to be a better person, whatever makes you live with a positive moral code... It's your own personal passion, your own personal set of rules. There is no right or wrong religion, as long as you're treating your fellow human's with kindness and respect.
An organized religion that requires people to believe blindly without thinking for themselves? An organized religion that feels the need to impose it's beliefs on others, instead of practicing the concept of "live and let live?" Now THAT is the shit that's bad for society.
I always assumed that Jesus was simply a human being with followers. A COMMUNITY LEADER, IF YOU WILL! It's gonna require quite a bit of proof if they want to refute Jesus' existence, but hey... I'll listen to anything!

Even the bible says that it is based on faith, based on something you cannot see. Thus, why do people take it so seriously? And why do American christians follow the old test when their Jesus clearly states commandments that make it completely obsolete, like love your neighbor and enemy, not lie about your neighbor nor kill your enemy? May be we should pass a law stating that you cannot practice your religion unless you actually study and understand it.

atheists are exactly the same as Christians
they both sit there and bitch at each other for recruiting people all the time
they call each other closed minded
really look at a bible thumping bookworm outside a church yelling at gay people and look at pen and teller yelling at every body who believe something without evidence

Why Can't I Own a Canadian?
October 2002Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a east coast resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:
When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
Your devoted fan,

if you have questions and doubts about the validity of god or jesus then no church or movie is going to change that for ya. while the secular part of our society allows the religious side to live thier lives as they like the religous parts of our society keep trying to turn the constitution into the gospel of saint america. we accept christmas as a national holiday although millions of us dont celebrate it but i bet in time some church wont be able to restrain themselves and lash out at this movie for the great crime of "having an idea".

In this critically acclaimed film, you will discover:
* The early founders of Christianity seem wholly unaware of the idea of a human Jesus
* The Jesus of the Gospels bears a striking resemblance to other ancient heroes and the figureheads of pagan savior cults
* Contemporary Christians are largely ignorant of the origins of their religion
* Fundamentalism is as strong today as it ever has been, with an alarming 44% of Americans believing that Jesus will return to earth in their lifetimes

The film kind of blew my mind too. I'd always believed Jesus probably existed, and thought it was only the issue of whether he was the son of God that was up for discussion –– but Give Larry some credit.
This film is very well researched. In it he gives examples of the numerous, almost identical precursors to Christ. All of their stories have many of the same pertinent points: a John the Baptist-like prophet foreseeing their birth, a virgin mother, a group of disciples (often 12), a period in the wilderness, a crucifixion, and a resurrection.
Like Robin Hood or King Arthur, these were popular tales of their time.

this is not meant to be sarcastic in any way, but i honestly want to know which religions these stories come from. i keep hearing about this mystery religion out there somewhere that seems to have some superficial similarities with christianity, but that's it.
honestly, if you or anyone else could link me to something or point me in the right direction for gathering information on this, i would be incredibly thankful.

Feh, you can go here: http://www.hscsamskar.com/articles/13/1/Hinduism-and-Christianity:-Poles-Apart-o... for a pretty cool and easy to understand parallel of Christianity and Hinduism.
Also, wikipedia has some interesting stuff but before you took any of it at it's word, I'd do some research first. Wikipedia can be sneaky b/c it is user moderated but it is interesting to look at none-the-less. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_and_other_religions
Hope this helps.

people need to relax. This is meant for those who use their religion to answer questions the bible wasn't meant to answer.
I love the story jesus, doesn't matter to me if he is real or not. The meaning behind the message still stands. The stories of morality still hold true. just because some else doesn't believe doesn't mean I forget what I was taught. Instead I practice it by laughing with Bill Maher at the foolish christians who can't seperate the stories of morality and the facts of our knowledge.
Oh yeah there is no proof of anything, that's why its called faith. See ya'll on sunday

i wasn't able to access the link, but if larry charles honestly believes that Jesus never existed, then i have to say that it's somewhat ironic.
the plot behind this religulous movie is to try and expose the ridiculousness of people's faith, particularly in christianity, and how they are unable to rationally back it up. my question is, how do you rationally back up a statement like "Jesus didn't exist"?
any historian or archaeologist worth his/her weight in salt knows that at the very least this guy walked the earth, and was likely crucified. the question is, 'was it significant in any way, shape, or form?' but for charles to come out making a statement on blind faith like this, i have to point out the inconsistency in him pointing out others' 'religulous' beliefs.

Actually, any archaeologist worth their weight would look to multiple sources to back up any claim made in an ancient text. Jesus Christ was mentioned in two major texts, and that's it. Even then, the two texts are essentially the same story, with different endings. They may have even had the same origin.
If Jesus was a real person with such a following, why is he not in the writings of any other historian of the time? Did Plutarch write about him? No.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus#Pliny_the_Younger (I know I don't usually use wiki to cite but its not concentrated in any other place that's free to use)
What's interesting is that people just take for granted that this guy had to have been around, cause its in that thar book, its gotsta be true! Perhaps - and maybe I'm going out on a limb for saying this because there is an actual book that says he was around - perhaps he wasn't real, but a construct created for a time when things were really shitty for a growing group of people who really needed a hero.... - 1 year ago

...Jesus as a person propably did exist...and he was in tune with the Universal thoughts of Love and Kindness.....like so many others through out time and space....and tried among great confusion to place things before the inhabitants of Earth....they could not understand or accept...and the messages of Love have been as twisted as a pretzel.....and all messengers of Kindness have been treated poorly out of fear...so the lesson learned....worship the message...not the messenger....next time you order a pizza....hug the delivery boy....throw the pizza away....you Will probably still be hungry...Golden Ruler...Will.....
