Analysis: Palin's words may backfire on McCain

WASHINGTON (AP) -- By claiming that Democrat Barack Obama is "palling around with terrorists" and doesn't see the U.S. like other Americans, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin targeted key goals for a faltering campaign.

And though she may have scored a political hit each time, her attack was unsubstantiated and carried a racially tinged subtext that John McCain himself may come to regret.

First, Palin's attack shows that her energetic debate with rival Joe Biden may be just the beginning, not the end, of a sharpened role in the battle to win the presidency.

"Our opponent ... is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," Palin told a group of donors in Englewood, Colo. A deliberate attempt to smear Obama, McCain's ticket-mate echoed the line at three separate events Saturday.

"This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America," she said. "We see America as a force of good in this world. We see an America of exceptionalism."

Obama isn't above attacking McCain's character with loaded words, releasing an ad on Sunday that calls the Arizona Republican "erratic" - a hard-to miss suggestion that McCain's age, 71, might be an issue.

"Our financial system in turmoil," an announcer says in Obama's new ad. "And John McCain? Erratic in a crisis. Out of touch on the economy."

A harsh and plainly partisan judgment, certainly, but not on the level of suggesting that a fellow senator is un-American and even a friend of terrorists.

In her character attack, Palin questions Obama's association with William Ayers, a member of the Vietnam-era Weather Underground. Her reference was exaggerated at best if not outright false. No evidence shows they were "pals" or even close when they worked on community boards years ago and Ayers hosted a political event for Obama early in his career.

    • unfortunately, these types of attacks are only allowing the image of an unflappable character of Obama to be highlighted making him seem to be the much more confident yet humble candidate which is far more presidential...

    • Garble7- Post something with substance. Not just this whole "liberals are...." bullshit.

I've definitely got both liberal and traditional viewpoints, so don't come on here and blast liberals. Also, dont claim and claim and claim but not back up a thing. you have no substance in anything you say, just like Pain in the debates the other night. Change subjects and dont answer questions. Ever if you do "answer" the question, it has no plan and no clue on how to implement or do anything.

    • Why do liberals use only the very liberal media to get their information. If you want to know the story that is not so biased you need to listen to news that is more middle line. So if you tune in to Fox news and Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hanitty, heaven forbid that I would DARE you to listen to any of those, you would hear more middle of the line news. FYI Rush Limbaugh's accuracy rating is over 98% which means he tells you his sources that back up what he says. I dare any of you to tune in.

ok so you cant back up your sources though, like i asked you last time you posted. I dont want to watch any TV besides Current and I don't want to listen to the radio. so the internet is where i get my information. as you for, why dont you try to get more liberal media, then? surprise yourself.

another thing... show me where it says his accuracy rating is over 98% cause i dont believe anything your conservative ass says.

    • For those of you who badmouth Sarah Palin you must not be listening. She is a good person with strong morals, working for the people. Her socalled character attacks on Mr. Obama were all in fact TRUE. There are videos and transcripts of Obama's indiscrepancies. Sarah is only stating the truth. For some reason there are liberal people out there who refuse to hear or see the truth. It is very sad. Why are they afraid to know the truth? Mr. Obama is not good for our country.
