According to new research, today's kids are apparently more concerned about their parents taking drugs than the parents are about their kids getting wasted.

20% of kids think their mummy and daddy have taken drugs in the past, with 10% believing their parents are still taking them. Those numbers are quite shocking considering only 1% of parents believe their little princess or little soldier is out getting high.

The research also shows some interesting results about how parents and their kids view celebrities who get off their face all the time. " Only one in ten children said celebrities taking narcotics seemed 'cool' – yet two thirds of parents are concerned about the effect of this on their children."

The research was conducted by Addaction.

    "Are you on drugs?"
"I'm not on drugs, I'm not Bob Dylan."
"Do you even know who Bob Dylan is?"
"No... but I know he died of drugs."
"Bob Dylan is alive and well, I produced his last four albums."
"Oh, you mean Uncle Robert? He didn't die of drugs."

Although 20% of kids think mummy and daddy are taking drugs, i'm sure the parents are more concerned stil. They might not think little Jimmy is on drugs, but i bet they still worry more than the kids.....

"daddy's on crack, ah well, good for him...."

Ya, they are on drugs, prescription drugs that have been pushed on everyone in the name of Big Pharma profits... we wish they were just smoking pot, instead they are taking dangerous petrochemical derivatives that come with a long list of side effects including sometimes an "increased risk of death".

I agree with simplecj, our Kids are already premedicated. I wish all I have to worry about is pot, like my parents did at least we know what that is.

My mom has fibromyalgia but cant smoke weed because she is a teacher. I'm concerned about her using prescription medication rather than an herb wrongfully treated as a drug.

It's called prescription drugs and the reality is that there are WAY more than 10% of adult parents addicted to them. Kids have the right to be worried. Studies are showing the growing addiction, and the kids are the ones ending up with access to narcotics because of parental dependency.

Ya I agree with unphiltered, it's rediculous some of the pain killers that "adults" get there hands on and take. Back pain my ass!

I know much about this subject. I am a father of an 8 yr old son and I use to abuse drugs and alcohol heavily. Although I quit everything except weed (which I don't consider a heavy drug and don't smoke as much as I used too and definitely not around my son ), it worries me all the time that he will be influenced to use. I am only 27, still young enough to know how easily kids are influenced these days. I hope he doesn't follow my foot steps, but I will be there for him if he ever does. Hopefully with the experience I have and the knowledge of what those deadly substances can do, I will be able to help him make better decisions than I did. Ultimately, I have to keep myself away from those drugs and lead by example and pray for the best.

Kids are *meant* to be the irresponsible experimental ones - it's scary to think that their parents could be off the rails too, and so not able to catch them if anything should go wrong... Mind you, it doesn't sound like they surveyed the in-between group most likely to experiment with drugs - uni students.

That is why the public and the government should focus on being a "responsible" drug user. It may sound like a oxymoron, but believing that people will stop using drugs is just silly. This issue is similar to preaching abstinence. We need to stop dictating people on what they can do, and more on how to do it wisely.

What exactly is in a prescription drug anyway? I have lost way two many freinds to them through the years.

This is my first comment on Current btw. I think we need to legalize marijuana. It's just that simple. There is NOTHING wrong with marijuana and it's probably one of the most harmless substances on the planet. It is absolutely beyond me that other countries have passed marijuana legislation and we're still bickering about it. Cigarettes are worse than marijuana so is alcohol and all these stupid ass prescription drugs that nobody really needs. Fuck big pharma, Fuck George Bush and Fuck the DEA.

I'm pretty sad to say, that both my mom and dad are on drugs: smoking. I feel concerned for them, but i'm not getting wasted by ANYTHING!

  •

My dad has smoked pot my whole life. My mom...well she could use a hit or two to mellow herself out. And me...I just said no.

I find this study interesting because many parents I know (though not my own, thankfully) are constantly on their children's backs about marijuana use and such, while meanwhile pumping them full of antidepressants, painkillers, and other legal drugs that are certainly far more harmful. Our society's double standard involving drug use is just one aspect of our ubiquitous hypocrisy, and I frankly find it shocking that, while so many people seem to know about it, so few care enough to do anything.

Reminds me of that bridge from the Dar Williams song "Are You Out There?"

And what's the future? Who will choose it?
    Politics of love and music
    Underdogs who turn the tables
    Indie versus major labels
There's so much to see through
Like our parents do more drugs than we do
    Oh...

Every new generation has to fuck up less than the old one, or else really, what's the use?
