Oxford and Cambridge University are to make lectures by leading academics available through iTunes.Cambridge says it will bring the work of its Nobel prize-winning academics in reach of a much wider public.
Oxford University says it will publish 150 hours of video and audio material of lectures and ideas from "world-leading thinkers".
These are the latest UK universities to provide free education content through the online downloading software.
A spokeswoman for Cambridge University says the idea is to "lift the veil" on the university, using iTunes to put lectures and talks from its experts into the public domain.

I Totally agree the more people with knowledge the better society is.Discussion is the soil for new ideas to grow.

This is absolutely fab, this is the type of society we want, learning for all! To have this oppurtunity available in our education and working life is truly awesome.

Fantastic idea. At least now you can get something on iTunes that doesn't make you lose brain cells.

This is a brilliant idea - one way to make sure that the knowledge and research coming out of the top universities (which we all pay for with our taxes) isn't reserved for those who are posh enough to go to Oxbridge colleges.

Very cool idea. A year of listening to these on my daily commute and I'm awarding myself an honorary (if not entirely genuine) PhD.
Click the link for loads of free lectures and courses in podcast/MP3 format from universities like Berkeley, MIT, Glasgow, Stanford and Oxford. Enjoy!

This is certainly a step in the right direction, even though I am not sure how many people who are not already experts in a specific area will actually avail of this as lectures tend to be highly specialised.

I reckon this is great - I'd certainly download some if they sound interesting. Universities should be all about promoting wider learning to everyone, rather than be exclusive and closeted academic institutions.

Well this way they can still be prestigious and reject so many people every year and have X-amount of subscribers to brag about...

If you listen to enough lectures, can you get an iDegree?
But seriously, I really love that they're doing this. There's no reason that this knowledge should be limited to the lecture halls of universities.
