Who will keep smoking? The more deprived your circumstances, the more likely you are to smoke. According to 'Beyond Smoking Kills'.

I think this will encourage the trade in cheap duty-free cigs from other countries.
Not a huge amount perhaps, but a noticible amount.

there is a brilliant photo on the back of a cigarette packet in Brazil which depicts man frowning at his willy and shrugging and a womans hand giving the thumbs down. Above it says in big letters 'impotence' Works really well in the Brazilian culture - no man would want that! fingers crossed that these warning discourage people!

BONG RIPS anyone?

Good effort being made on keeping youth from starting a horrible habit. I notice fewer smokers around, and get the stank eye whenever I light up...but we all make choices.

I'm a smoker. 45 years. It's a habit, like many others. I don't advocate it. It can cause problems. Like alcohol, it shouldn't be sold to kids. Adults should be allowed to decide for themselves. But I find I resent people that think I'm being "encouraged" to quit. I'm not being encouraged; I'm being intimidated. I experience prejudice, because of this habit. You can go to a bar, get roaring drunk, start a fight, but nobody shuts the bar. But light a cigarette & you're gone. Be advised friends, I'll do with my own body as I see fit, whether you agree or not. If I decide to quit, I'll let you know. Don't hold your breath.

Canada has had very graphic pictures covering 40% of our cigarette packs for years now. We still have smokers.
-
Good call, We should start telling smokers that cigs are bad for them.
-
LOOK ITS GENE SIMMONS AT 1:17!!!

It seems like with all the widely publicized health risks associated with smoking, you'd be crazy to start now. Check out this pod about a guy who tries to find out how hard it is to take up smoking...
-
I only smoke when I drink.
I'm up to 2 packs a day. *hiccup*:P
No, seriously, my Dad quit smoking after 50+ years. He kept a pack of smokes in his pocket during the process because he said it felt comforting. He said he caved in and smoked one after a couple of weeks, and then another one a couple of weeks after that... and then that was it. He threw the pack in the trash after a couple of months of carrying it around. He hasn't had a smoke in 7 or 8 years now. On the down side, he said the taste of beer and coffee aren't the same anymore. But at least he has his health, which is surprisingly good considering everything.I might smoke on occasion if I'm drinking, but I'm not a smoker, per se.
-
Why do people smoke anyway? I understand drinking, but smoking? I just don't get people who put their lives at risk for their social status or whatever.
-
britney still smokes, so it's still cool
-
Social status?? I started smoking when i was a teenager, out of curiosity, and it became easier to support my habit when the corner store wold sell them to me at age 14; Now i'm 25 and can't seem to put them down.. I have tried quitting several times, and it gets harder each time.... not to mention the cravings get more hardcore after i start again... speaking of which, i'm going to go light up right now..

As far as economics are concerned, tobacco it one of the United State's largest industries. The fact that less and less people are not smoking isn't exactly the best thing for the pockets of any one in that industry. Did I also mention tobacco companies and the people who expose themselves to the adverse affects of tobacco put a lot of money into out healthcare system?
-
Many other countries have this type of packaging on their smokes. I think it's just another label that no one cares about. I bought Thai cigarettes for friends back home because of the gross pictures.
-
The current public animosity towards cigarette smokers has made it just shy of socially unacceptable to be a smoker. The majority of people now don't and that's fine. But there are still those of us that haven't decided to quit, for whatever reason. They made the tobacco companies put their little message on the packs saying how bad this is, but that didn't work. So now they've resorted to grossing me out every time I take a pack from my pocket. Did they think I didn't understand their little message? And this is just a stronger version of the same thing? What's next? A pack that hollers at me? So for those of you that are responsible for this, or wish to continue it, I say that I think it's time to back off with this agressive and offensive anti-smoking campaign. You've won already. You won't convert me until I'm ready to do the thing myself. Harassing me just gets my back up; it doesn't make me quit smoking.

Nicotine is toxic, alcohol is poison, and I wonder what the deal is with those chemtrails?
This is American Holocaust!
"Smog technician Christopher Delo pulls a long, coiled probe out of the exhaust pipe of a late-model Volvo. The car passed smog certification, so it's time for his smoke break. Delo lights a Marlboro, still holding the pollution-measuring nozzle. He takes a drag and puffs directly into the end of the probe to 'smog' himself. Flashing across the computer screen at Newport Smog are readings for air-polluting molecules from partially burned fuel, including hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. The 1997 Volvo measured 50 parts per million of hydrocarbon emissions. Delo's breath reads 351."

cabinettags. I can understand why you feel victimised, this is after all a free country and everyone has the right to commit suicide - it is not advised but it is not illegal anymore. What you do behind the closed doors of your home is nothing to do with anyone else so you providing tax revenue to the Treasury is fine by me.
But Sephroe was spot on when they said that non-smokers have to endure your habit wherever they go, be it wading through the litter of cigarette butts outside every pub or office building or no longer being able to enjoy a pub garden in summer because all the smokers are there.
More importantly at any one time there are thousands of NHS beds whose habit has put them there and we all pay for that. I for one look forward to the day when your habit is restricted to your own home only and then the rest of us will not have to watch thousands of people every day slowly killing themselves.
-
Put out your cigs and light up a joint. The buzz lasts longer and it won't kill you.

The government, and health industry need to back out of Americans lives. If health care was in better standings they wouldn't care if you smoked 10 packs a day. But someone has to pay for all of the operations and fixing smokers broken parts. But now a days everything is bad for you and if you don't goto the gym and eat healthy then your frowned upon and looked at as if you don't value your life. What we should do is home grow tobacco, and see what happens when we stop buying theirs.
-
one of the reasons people smoke is the same as drinking coffee....
And there are laws for Coffee/smoke breaks ....
so Workers have started smoking so they get a break... I know that on many jobs I've had ... smoke breaks were ok ... but should I wan't to take a break and say have an Ice Cream or someting ... it was get back to work ... smoke break ... ok just hurry up and come back when ur done .
-
BTW Tobacco maybe a good feedstock for making ethanol http://home.ktc.com/bdrake/altengy.html
-
As a smoker I could say that it will make people not want to smoke but once you start it's hard to quit so no gruesome picture would cause me to stop. All smokers know the health risks.

In Australia we have the pics on the covers and the adverts i gave up smoking 2 years ago, i cant afford it and now my sons cardiologist has gone up from free to $400 up front a visit, in 2 years, I am glad I did
The cost of living has gone up 200-500 % in 5 years but inome has only increased 10 -15 % in 10 years lots of things things we now go without. Smoking I gladly gave up.-
