How many Haitian artists can you name? New York ≠ poverty.

To me it seems to be more about personal pain. That can come from poverty, drugs, broken family life.

I think poverty is pretty damn unhelpful for creating art - it's simply difficult to get creative stuff done when you're scratching around trying to make ends meet. Even artists who lived in poverty at certain times of their lives (like Egon Schiele) had rich friends/benefactors they could call on in desperate circumstances. While poverty can make for varied and inspiring life experience, it doesn't usually leave time for creative endeavours, except for the most dedicated and burningly creative of folk, and it doesn't get your work seen. mcamargo's point is a very good one.
