Racist Obama Billboard Causes Outrage

Image...
Highway billboard attacking Obama inspires heated newspaper letters: a billboard in West Plains showing a caricature of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama wearing a turban and using his middle name - Hussein - in quotes has sparked outrage and accusations of racism.

    Here's the billboard.

...Raymond Fine, 74, of West Plains, said the sign is a form of free speech. "If they can burn a flag, then they can put a sign up like that," Fine told the News-Leader...

    West Plains, Missouri, huh?

    Pretty fucking disgusting.

    disgusting, yes.
    stupid, yes.
    free speech? yes.

free speech doesn't ever imply that the words make sense or should be followed or that the speaker isn't a bigoted moron.

and yet they breed and vote.

but that's one of the prices of free speech, and even so, it's worth the price, because the alternative is much worse.

free speech also includes the right to change channels and boycott.

    exercise your rights.

ps. [10.11.08]... thinking about that sign again, it occurred to me... ok, and what's all that bad if it is true?!

there are two sides, at least, to each of the discussions listed, and each has stories of both good results AND bad results. those are not reasons to forbid any of the items listed.... IF you think about it.

Ok, educate me on this one, american folks :)

But aren't gun regulations supposed to be good for your country considering the fact that there's a high gun related crime/casualty compared to other first world countries?

And what's wrong with same sex marriages if two people are happy being with one another. Sure, it's not normal, but shouldn't they have the individual freedom to do so? While your government is so busy imposing "freedom" on other countries, some of your countrymen obviously don't have this luxury...

This is NOT FREE SPEECH, this is slander. Whoever put that up could be against these things but the minute he implies that there is a person pursuing these things without a proof he is committing slander against Obama. Read your constitution and understand that free speech does not mean insulting or attacking people.

Unfortunately, that's what politics in this wonderful United States is all about anymore. It's really not "How good can I make myself look?" but rather, "How bad can I make that other person look?"

Why doesn't Obama embrace his middle name then?Perhaps if he didn't ignore it and treat it as though he were ashamed of it he wouldn't bring this ignorant crap on? Isn't it he who ignores it and never says it? Why do that if you are proud of your heritage? And this is politics in America unfortunately... and it's been going on since Adam's and Jefferson's time.

The men with the Rednecks for Obama sign are from Missouri too. So there is balance to this insanity. Not everyone in the South is an ignorant idiot.

So, we wouldn 't have this stuff if his name was Barack Sue Obama?

It's always Obama's fault with some people. If only he had embraced his middle name and used it every time he introduced himself, then racist billboards like this would never happen. Right. By all means, let's blame Obama for this jack asses' bigoted views.

Yes, the guy is exercising his free speech and yes, it is the price we pay to live in a free society. But when we see this kind of bigotry, we should call it what it is rather than looking to make excuses for it.

Unless of course down deep you really like seeing someone smeared this way...makes you wonder.

Dear USA, ignorance will no longer be tolerated. Be warned.

"Yes, the guy is exercising his free speech and yes, it is the price we pay to live in a free society."

The problem is that HE IS NOT exercising freedom of speech, he is being slanderous, by implying not only that Obama is a terrorist (thanks to the association that exist in the minds of Americans that anyone with a turban is a public enemy). His "free speech case" would not stand two minutes in court IF Obama would take him.

Now if he had said that if a democratic government would change these things, he would be issuing an opinion or a position over these issues, which are against his principles and he would be free to express

This is slanderous and it incites hate.

krag2112: Thanks for not answering the question but continuing to respond in the same ignorant way you always do to me. And in all honesty, this billboard is not particularly racist. It is intolerable to religion in inferring he is Muslim and that being somehow bad and actually insults all Muslims in that way, which yes, is ignorant and hateful. Perhaps you then need to adjust your own perceptions before shooting assumptions off at others about their motivations regarding comments made here. Therefore, the question in light of this was valid. If you can't answer it just admit it. Noone stated it was HIS FAULT. The question was why doesn't Obama ever mention or embrace his middle name, especially in light of this? Do you know the answer? If not, don't bother with countering with another subtle insult or inference about my character and expect a response. This is one reason why I actually stopped talking politics here for the most part, because there is a contingent of Obama supporters here (not all but some) who have made it almost impossible for anyone else to express an opinion that isn't in exact conformance with their own without risking nasty subtle personal inferences and remarks. HE then needs to address this hate is all I'm saying. Make of that what you will and always do.

Please tell me what was racist?

Obama's real name? That denotes his religion not his race.

The funny picture. Every candidate is victim of funny pictures of them.

    Nothing is racist about it.

Why did Obama change his Muslim name to a Christian name?

Thousands of Blacks changed their Christian names to Muslim when the converted to Islam.

That is not very effective. Those things are reasons I support Obama.

Xenophobic. Racist. Fanatic. Fundamentalist. Fascist. Extremist. Ignorant. Despotic.

No matter what someone calls it, it's an insult to common humanity.

And actually the sign is erroneous. Biden already agreed with Palin in the debate stating they are not for gay marriage. Hell, that sign looks like it could be from the 2000 election cycle. They must keep it for every election cycle and only shellack the name of the candidate over the top of it.

I see nothing there that is not true nor is Racist. What in the world are you talking about. Those are in his platform. Matter of fact they are the heart of the Democrat platform. That is his name. He has been photographed with that head gear. His mother said he was a Muslim. They got the color correct and the likness is not a strech. What is your problem. Are we not allowed to even speak this Communists name without being called a racist by the like of you?

While travelling through the Ozarks, I stopped at a bar in the small town of Lebanon, Missourri. I asked the guy sitting next to me, "What do you do for entertainment, here in Lebanon?". He grabbed me by my collar, shoved his face in mine and, with a cigarette and whiskey breath, yelled, "It's pronounced, 'Leb-nin'! You sum bitch!". The bartender broke us up before real trouble started and said, "We're kinda touchy about that 'round here."
Not everyone I met was that bad but, it told me something about attitudes and perceptions.
