Abuse of professional standards is not the monopoly of invertebrate psychologists on loan to the military.
It is more a pandemic than that, on a scale I never expected to see on this continent.
Every profession waves its PR banner and proclaims it maintains the highest of abstract standards. With the unraveling of each new ENRON and following the long chain of corrupt officials, bag men, and venal execs - the same "bad apples" case is made. There were so few! We caught them all! Our standards have been maintained!
When the Nazis first marched into Paris, foreign correspondent William Shirer watched, in the crowd. As people around him began to applaud he was shocked - didn't they understand this was an invading army? He asked those who approved why they did so.
Those applauding said they believed that the Nazis were proud, brutal of course, but sworn aryan enemies of corruption - soon you will see it - only the Nazis can put an end to the insane corruption of "our politics."
And soon they saw what they had welcomed was an invading army, no less, no more.
The same picture permeates modern life. Faced with corruption which seems the only quick course to riches it just looks dumb not to join the party.
Not surprisingly, despite 8 years, many still applaud those most corrupt fearing that anyone different must be dangerous. They do not recognize - but will soon - the party is over, all the bills are due, and they alone have been left with the tab.
