US: panel finds Palin abused power

A legislative committee investigating Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has found she unlawfully abused her authority in firing the state's public safety commissioner. The investigative report concludes that a family grudge wasn't the sole reason for firing Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan but says it likely was a contributing factor.

The Republican vice presidential nominee has been accused of firing a commissioner to settle a family dispute. Palin supporters have called the investigation politically motivated.

Monegan says he was dismissed as retribution for resisting pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a bitter divorce with the governor's sister. Palin says Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.

    • So, my question is, shes found guilty what happens now? will she be slapped on the wrist? Fined? will anything actually happen. or will she be allowed to serve as vice and possibly president of this country? saying that americans actually vote them into office, or they steal it like the past 2 elections. what happens to her? or the man she fired for that matter. did he loose his 401k or any other benefit because he actually did his job? will he be reinstated in his position?
why was her husband allowed to deny the subpoena?
Would i be allowed to do the same?

    • I just find it funny that people actually think Obama has substance. He is full of empty promises and political BS just like McCain.

You know I was actually called a racist a few days ago for having a McCain bumper sticker on my car. Yeah I was called a racist by some black guy for simply having a McCain bumper sticker on my car and this guy was a total stranger to me.

I have looked at Obama's voting record what little record there is anyway but I promise you there are millions of black voters out there simply voting based on skin color now you tell me who is racist.

I dare anyone to go out look at Obama's record and show me one thing he has done to better our country. Dont get me wrong I am not a big McCain supporter but he has been doing this for along time and yes some of it was BS but he actually has a record where Obama does not. Obama is friends with terrorist and a very racist preacher his ties with these people makes me wonder what else we dont know about him.

The Economy is going down the toilet and you are NOT going to win, so why not take up a talent like weaving?

It will make the web of 'lies' you perpetuate seem more INTERESTING!

Now go back to Free Republic and hide under your bridge. OK?

    • Palin has been spreading 'hatred' towards Senator Barack Obama! McCains crowds have become 'bloodthirsty' hordes because of her actions!

Sarah Palin needs to put her husband on a leash so he won't stalk other family members, make calls from the Govenor's mansion, and she needs to quit firing people who do not see things her way.

"Who really is Barack Obama?" Then the false rhetoric that has incited anger and hatred in their rallies while they stand by.......NOW, who really is Sarah Palin??
You see they may cast unproven aspersions on Obama that they have designed themselves[with lobbyists help] but the Alaskan law makers have PROOF Palin violated Ethics of her office. Her response, "not true". Yeah. How does it feel, you hypocrite!!!!!

We have had so much of this from the current administration and republican party that I am afraid this kind of behavior is becoming ingrained in those of this stripe or at least that is the perception and that is worrying from a group that claims 'country first'. Republicanism is becoming associated with mean spirited vindictiveness as a character trait more than patriotism.... More worrying and something we should all be thinking about...

Obama/Biden is in no way in the bag! Mainstream media controls the spin. All they have to do is start spinning articles against Obama, then spin the poll data and justify a McCain/Palin victory.

Our voting process has not been fixed. It is still hackable. The only way to guarantee a victory for Obama/Biden is a landslide! They cant steel a landslide! The same individuals who gave us George W. can give us McCain, whether we agree or not. They control the spin, they can spin the polls any way they choose!

      ---

What? Really? If you're going to say she's guilty at least have a better reason than OMG it was part of the motivation. How much part? 2%....99%?

I was thinking I'd read the article and it would be apparent that she was wrong for doing what she did because the evidence would be so apparent..but apparently it wasn't because it was only PART of the reason he was snuffed.

And of course those who hate would love this and not notice that they couldn't even find them guilty wholly for the wrong but only partly....

      it's a weak accusation still.

      Unfortunately J_J,

REALITY isn't always a black or white issue.

The Republican worldview that "you're either with us or you're against us" is what led our country to prosecute two ill-fated wars. It's the same mindset that says "ALL financial regulation is inherently bad, so let Wall Street have its way." And its the attitude behind the characterization of Senator Obama as a terrorist. The McCain campaign strategy is stoking the fires of the rabid Right to the degree that McCain himself is getting booed for saying that the next President of the United States is a decent guy.

Absolutist thinking in politics is a real threat to our democracy.

Yes, J_Jammer is a bit cocky. But his viewpoints are the Socratic gadfly bites that can lead to a bit of sanity check. When he notes that the accusation is 'weak' he IS raising the voice that 'absolutism in politics' is a bad thing (Cant you guys even learn to say yes???)

Being a Liberal, with a capitol L, requires that you THINK about the consequences. It requires that your KNOW the context. It requires that you LISTEN to the input.

J_Jammer is cocky, but he is insightful. The accusation against SP is pretty weak. If you have a knee-jerk reaction to his comments, I suggest that you might look into your own motivations.

Are you merely following the charisma of the Liberal voice, or are you capable of leading your own life in a Liberal and compassionate manner?

As if she had been "out of line" but not so horrible for your average far away up in the Yukon state with six months of darkness. It's pretty average. • I guess that story they tried to put out was more of an attepmt at wish fulfullment then?

Palin Pre-Empts State Report, Clears Self in Probe
McCain-Palin campaign pre-empts state ethics report, clears governor of wrongdoing

"It is tragic that a false story hatched by a blogger after drinks with Trooper Wooten led the legislature to allocate over $100,000 of public money to be spent in what has become a politically driven investigation," the 21-page report concludes.

Although the report describes Wooten as a separate issue, the McCain campaign goes into great detail about the "rogue" trooper and his "long history of unstable and erratic behavior." The campaign describes allegations of violence, including threatening Palin's family and shooting his stepson with a stun gun.

The report also includes allegations that Wooten cheated the workers' compensation system. Todd Palin has said he had numerous conversations with government officials about why Wooten was allowed to stay on the job.
"The Palins make no apologies for wanting to protect their family and wanting to bring attention to the injustice of a violent trooper keeping his badge and abusing the workers' compensation system."

But Todd Palin said he never pressured anyone, including his wife.

The McCain campaign says the investigation has become "muddied with innuendo, rumor and partisan politics."

The last part seems to be correct at least since that story certainly looks like an attempt at muddying the case with innuendo, rumor and partisan politics.

I doubt that will affect the panel decision though

The state trooper Palin wanted fired, tasered an 11 year old boy, who happened to be related to Palin.

Tasering someone without cause is a criminal act.

Tasering an 11 year old boy is child abuse.

Tasering someone without cause is also sadistic.

Palin made the tough choice, and forced the firing of a sadistic state trooper.

I'd have a little more respect for this site if it were at least fair.

The trooper was investigated and punished. And Walter Monegan went as far as warning Gov. Palin that this pressure would make it harder to fire the trooper if he gave them further legitimate reason. What did he get for giving the Governor this reasonable advice? He got fired. And after he was fired he got the added humiliation of having Palin lie about the reasons.

All of this leads us to these questions. Was Palin was vetted at all? What does this say about McCain's judgment?

What Sarah Palins brother-in-law did, or didnt do, has nothing to do with this report. This report is about the Actions of Sarah Palin!

Sarah Palins brother-in-law is not running for V.P.! Sarah Palin is! Bottom line, Sarah Palin abused her power!

krag, you made a point. I will back you up generally, except when it comes to picking on Jan. She is a personal friend and that is that.

But when you make sense it is worth recommending!

    • Yeah, you got this in right before me too. Thanks for posting it though. It'll be interesting to see how the GOP will spin this...

It's too bad that when they exposed this article that they didn't show the reasons Palin was so interested in that case. Good thing we have vigilant viewers. Thanks

    • Now, it's on to the, seemingly endless, "spin cycle", damage control posturing and blame game.

Its Saturday a.m., MSNBC is already spinning, this story will be old news by Monday. Nothing to see here, move along. They stated it wont be important by Monday and how the financial crisis will overshadow this story.

Sounds like a plan, since *** MSM controls whats hot and whats not! ***. Lately, mainstream media has acted as though they are covering McCain and Obama equally.

I think we have been spun and when they go back to spinning for the right, they can reflect on this short period of equal coverage. Americans must stay focused! Sarah Palin ABUSED HER POWER! SHE THINKS THE CONSTITUTION GIVES THE V.P. MORE POWER THAN DICK CHENEY IS USING., mainstream media has acted as though they are covering McCain and Obama equally. I think we have been spun and when they go back to spinning for the right they can reflect on this short period of equal coverage.

Sarah Palin abused her power as Governor, what can she do as V.P., or President. Remember she would be a heartbeat away from becoming President! Dont just move along!
