A 14-year-old girl has died after jumping out of a stolen van being driven by a 13-year-old boy, Chicago Police said.
Shonique Young, a freshman at Gage Park High School, died Friday night of injuries she suffered Thursday when she jumped from the van while it was moving.
The van was being followed by police when she jumped at about 5 p.m. Thursday in the 6100 block of South Marshfield.
Police said the 13-year-old driver began to speed up when he saw the squad car behind him.
Shonique apparently panicked and jumped out of the vehicle, her family said.
They don't know why she was in a stolen van. "That didn't sound like the type of person she was," her aunt Isabella Young said Saturday.
Shonique wanted to be a pediatrician, relatives said.
The 13-year-old driver was taken into custody after he crashed the van into a pole.
He has been charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and was cited for negligent driving and driving without ever being issued a license, police said.
