What would it cost to wipe out world poverty, guarantee universal health care, stabilise population growth and roll back the ravages of global warming?

About $190 billion a year, or the equivalent of a third of U.S. annual military expenditure, a prominent environmental economist says in a new book.

"Once you accept that climate change, population growth, spreading water shortages, rising food prices etcetera are threats to our security, it changes your whole way of thinking about how you use public resources," Lester Brown told Reuters in an interview.

From eradicating adult illiteracy to restoring fisheries and stabilising water tables, the head of the Earth Policy Institute think tank in Washington calculates the cost of saving civilisation in a new edition of his best-selling "Plan B". The $190 billion price tag compares with $1.2 trillion that world governments spent on military budgets in 2006. The United States splurged the most with $560 billion.

Thanks iloveravi! Exactly the issue! In a similar vein, it was estimated around the time of 9/11 that it would cost 13 billion to eradicate child hunger permanently in the USA, we didn't do that, but weeks later, we bailed out the airline industry for 11 billion.

The upside of the possible economic and social/political melt down we are about to experience is that we will be forced all of a sudden to rebuild the way we live, and maybe in the process we will end up saving the planet.

What people don't realise... is that many westerners would have to experience some kind of decline in their quality of life for everything to be equal. They'll have to make some kind of sacrifice which I don't think is going to happen. They love their iPhones and Happy Meals waaaaaayyyyyy too much.

...and who will we exploit with our capitalistic exercises then!! We DEMAND that poor people make our shoes and clothing.

    *slams fist on table

    ;)

PS. It's not about saving the planet either. It's about saving the human race. There's a big difference. We don't care about the planet!! We care about US!!!

Who The Hell Voted This DOWN?!?

If you damn fools would stop multiplying like rabbits, we would not be in this position. What is the Carbon footprint for everyone of the rugrats that you placed here to ruin this ecosystem. Crybabies.

The fact that we need a 'Plan B' is ludicrous!! It would have been far better to implement conservatory systems to begin with instead of competing economically with capitalism only to end up where we are now...

Let's work together to quit ravaging the Thing that gave us life and use Her splendorous sources a bit more wisely from here on out!

This is all just an American dream. Just a dream. Anytime now, we'll wake up. That's all, only a dream.

How do we eradicate greed? That's the answer to this problem, because without it, there would be no need for $190 billion a year. It would be free and should be. The benefits far outweigh the disadvantages.

IT ALL ABOUT THE MONEY PEOPLE.
we in america are spoiled. turn on the tap and theres water,go to the store and what you want to eat is there. and if you don't want it throw it away and run to the pizza hut. what would your life be like if you spent the day looking for enough to eat for your family are had to walk miles to find water. in this country if the electric is off and there is no water are we do not have a home anymore we set back and gripe at the goverment to do something for us.MONEY IS THE NEW GOD AND PEOPLE ARE EXPENDABLE

Our priorities have been f*ucked from the day Paris Hilton became a celebrity.

When we idolize money and beauty over behavior and principle what do you expect to happen?

The world is run by a very ugly scenario of what makes the most money, not what is right for the planet or those of us forced to live on it.

If life is God's great experiment, then humans and their un-God-like behavior are f*cking it up royally.

How does one change the "human" nature of the species? For the most part, people are greedy. Sure people want to have a better life for their children, but that doesn't mean that people want a better life for their neighbors children. Unfortunately in this nation, and a few others, the concept of capitalism has run amuck. Pure unregulated capitalism can lead to wonderful things, but without ethics to guide it, pure unregulated capitalism can lead to some very horrible things. As a society, nay, as a world population of beings that can potentially think, we are not yet ready for capitalism to the extent that it has developed in certain nations. We need regulations and laws to restrict how far capitalism stretches. Otherwise companies like Enron and/or numerous banks will financially destroy thousands of lives just because it can or will make a short term profit. Now to some extent the issue with the balloon loans given by banks is the fault of the people who accepted the loan, but that is why people who work in banks are supposed to have some kind of knowledge about economics. People in banks are supposed to recognize a bad loan and not give one out.
Sadly this talk about economics and the potential/real corruption of capitalism can be linked to a lot out of environmental and resource problems. Let's split the problem into two subtopics, resources and maintaining the environment.
People, in general, want to save the world because intellectually we know that we need to do so in order to insure our future; however, we don't want to save the world because many people have an instinct to horde things either for themselves of for their personal future generations. We don't usually like to share with people that we don't know in any way shape or form.
The reason quite a few people don't want to work on maintaining the environment is simple. People are lazy! And we see the proof of the lazy nature of the human race almost everywhere we go. Drive down a road and see a fast food soda cup in the gutter, that's because some lazy schmuck was too lazy to hold the cup until he/she came to a garbage can. But keep in mind, lazy does not just refer to action, it can also refer to people not changing their habits. This is why some nations, the United States in particular, have had a problem lowering their carbon footprint. It requires change, and change requires effort. The effort might not be all that long lasting because it will be relatively effortless to maintain a lesser carbon footprint once we succeed, but it is that initial shock of effort that holds a lot of people back.

    The rant is done now.

wow. i can't even believe this post! it is what i have been waiting to hear, and gives me so much hope that i cant even think clearly! i need to post again when i can breathe!
its just... this is a possibility of a better future for our entire species, and if we can believe in what is right, believe in people again, brother to brother, the world might be a place we all want to live in.

We need this but too many people are too violent and alot are not willing to give anything new a try. were stuck in the past and our luxuries as u.s citizens drowned us to not care. All we want is more...

  •

Another world is possible. This is the moment of opportunity. FDR saved capitalism, lets not make the same mistake again.

    my wish:
one day we wake up and see the beauty in all that is around us, and realize that there is so much we could do for eachother. without having to be promised something in return.
i am sadend by humanity in all of its current forms. we are smart enough to know better, but to selfish to make the change.
we look at others and say "what do they have", "well i want a better one."
why is it, that we spend all of our time making money to spend it on something we wont use in 6 months, or that will be out dated in three?
i have two children, beautiful and smart. but i never see them because i have to work two jobs just to keep a roof over our heads.
i wont get to see them grow up the way i would like to.
and i just hope that when they grow up, i will have taught them, that to help others in need is the greatest gift you can give. and it normally costs nothing but time and effort.

    Good Post...

we are a species still locked in to short term "bigger bang for your buck" syndrome. Im not sure how to word this... but popularity is the prime motivator in any "engagement" the logic of this argument that the US sends soldiers here and there for "National Security" reasons (tv shots of warships on patrol/soldiers marching/think of George Orwells 1984) will always outvote/outmanouvre/outpopularise most events because we are a species driven by demand for action. Until we learn to "control" that knee jerk action (ie reaction) we will continue down this populist avenue I'm afraid. However 'distraction' methods can gain momentum... so keep focussed on the "sizzle" and the consumers may follow... just a thought...lol DeafboyOne. (By the way in Deaf culture we're v much influenced by what we "see" not what we're unable to hear...) db1

psychology of this is interesting too. we need someone/something to blame? until we find a way that is better than appointing individual (politicians) to make decisions for us (after all democracy is still relatively young) we the seemingly powerless, the seemingly disaffected will one day learn how to use our negotiating strengths on the internet - the most powerful negotiating tool on earth (why? because it knows no boundaries and it doesnt suffer fools gladly - if a government is telling its population one thing but internet is telling it another... who will the people believe?) think for a minute is your personal belief system a psychology of 'being a victim/siege mentality/pressured by system/work etc' OR is yours the psychology of free market/free exchange/free expression. I know where my thoughts lie. Just a question of perspective thats all...
