Palin mistakes fans for protesters at Va. rally
By BOB LEWIS
Associated Press Writer

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin mistook some of her own fans for hecklers Monday as a rally that drew thousands.

A massive crowd of at least 20,000 spread across the parking lot of Richmond International Raceway, and scores of people on the outer periphery more than 100 yards from the stage could not hear.

"Louder! Louder!" they began chanting, and the cry spread across the crowd to Palin's left. Some pointed skyward, urging that the volume be increased.

Palin stopped her remarks briefly and looked toward the commotion.

"I hope those protesters have the courage and honor to give veterans thanks for their right to protest," she said.

Some in the crowd tried to shout toward her what was really being said, but she couldn't hear them.

Some in the crowd had stood in place for more than three hours on a sunny day without shade. Paramedics provided aid to several people who passed out in the press of people. The exact nature and number of the ailments was not immediately clear from Henrico County authorities.

Palin had campaigned earlier Monday with John McCain in Virginia Beach, only the second time the GOP ticket has campaigned in Virginia since June. Democrat Barack Obama or his running mate, Joe Biden, together have visited the state eight times over that span.

Virginia has been solidly Republican for 40 years but is now an electoral battleground with both sides locked in a very close race for the state's 13 electoral votes.

Addressing the crowd, Palin largely steered clear of her recent criticisms of Obama. Instead, she acknowledged the emotion that has built up on both sides, particularly since the financial collapse.

"There is a lot of anger. There is anger at the inside dealing and anger at lobbyists and anger at the greed on Wall Street. There is anger at the Washington elite and there is anger at voter fraud," she said.

She promised a spending freeze if she and McCain win, and evoked cheers of "Drill, Baby, Drill!" in calling for greater domestic mining and oil drilling. The crowd roared when she criticized Biden for remarks he made in Ohio that the United States had little interest in coal-fired electrical power.

The afternoon's loudest ovation came when country music star Hank Williams Jr. offered a rendition of his hit "Family Tradition" that opened by assailing "the left-wing liberal media."

Palin is an enemy of free speech. She connotes protesting with negativity. She is a driving force behind the polarization of the media. If she wants to discuss bias, look in the mirror.

Sarah Palin has more in common with the Taliban than with American ideals.

She is the first of her kind. People recoil from her like a hot flame. I have never seen anyone like her that is despised as much as she is by so many people. She is doing this to herself.

This is not the media. She is terrible. She is an embarrassment to America. When is her husband going to shave that stupid redneck goatee off ?

Palin is one of the slowest of political candidates. I believe she is actually worse than Bush...and that's really saying something.

They were chanting "louder", but she probably thought they were saying "liar."
That's what happens when your base sounds like a lynch mob even when they're not shouting racial epithets.

There may be women who were offended by this, but it's looking more and more like McCain chose her for talents in T&A instead of Q&A.

This should not be the person who is next in line for the presidency.

HAHAHA i believe she has been and will always be one of the bigger mistakes that the govenrment has made by allowing her to even have any power in the US and as far as running the state of alaska, well i have no problem with just having 49 states if it means we get rid of her.

Everyone makes mistakes. You know like thinking there are 57 states.....oops.

She has been hit hard with constant negativity where she goes or on TV so for her to think that there are protesters when there is none is reasonable and mistakable.

It's like your mother yelling your name a certain way and every time she's asking you to take out the trash or clean the kitchen or help your little brother with this....that you get use to the way she yells that when she does that one time you tell her that you can't do everything all the time...but this time she was giving you money she borrowed from you.

    People have done that.

But if you dislike Palin you just add this to the OMG she's stupid list....so it really doesn't matter if someone makes it reasonable you'll hate her anyway. Pointless in pretending you're any other way other than GOTTA HATER GIVE ME MORE...like a cookie monster except with hate.

After Palin was verbally bashed during the protest in Pittsburgh outside her fundraiser, and then humiliated the next day by the booing crowd at the Philadelphia hockey game, the campaign had to scramble on Sunday to prep her so she could be ready with a patronizing response to the the next group of protestors! She was so charged and ready to use her rehearsed lines with her smirk on her face, that it never occur to her to ask her campaign managers to explain how to differentiate between a hostile crowd and her fans!!! She clearly had trouble identifying the difference at the hockey game too as she waved to the booing crowd! All I have to say is...dumb as a brick....and now paranoid!
