i'm glad the election is over and we have a progressive democrat in office.
bookbrown - how about a piece on the latino appointments to the cabinet what that means as a whole to the nation. let's move the conversation forward. like our president said, "this is not a latino/asian/black/gay american, this is the united states of america"
i'd like to see both dems and republicans work together to get us out of debt, to fix the economy and to regain our good name in the international political arena.Wendy Carrillo

I'm almost as hopeless as I am hopeful that the problems can be fixed as soon as they were created. It's depressing.
America had a ragged sack of dilemas, and the last two terms really pulled on the loose threads that kept that fabric together. Now, as all the issues spill out from the bottom and into our lap, I think we'll all have to consider mending this ourself.
This situation screams for community efforts to pick up the slack, but in the history of our nation, it may only stimulate more elbowing against each other for individuals to survive. That's always been the make-up of our ghettos and barrios, and as more of the U.S. loses finances and transforms cities into money-less 'hoods, I think we'll see more angst and separation.

I would still like to hear what people think about Obama being black. More so than what Lincoln did in his administration do you think Obama's race is influencing the Latino vote?

I was married to a Spanish woman for 21 years, in other words I loved a Spaniard for much of my adult life. She is fairly intelligent but we are not married any more. She even thinks Obama is the wrong man for the job. One of the things that always amused her was the fact that a word could be labeled wrong for some to speak while it was contained in songs by others. So, I propose to have two words I can't say, (1) the N word and (2) the O word.
Now if I could get the O word off the ballot, the election would be in the bag. - 1 year ago

Maybe where you live, but where I live they're mainly Republican. Catholic yes, But they feel the Left doesn't believe in GOD anymore. Remarkably smart for people who can't even read the Left's Blasphemy. McCain signs are all over the Hispanic neighborhoods, cars etc. They call him Juanito.

Is it supposed to be significant that Hispanics called him Juanito? His name is John. Most polls show that the majority of Hispanics side with Obama, so a wife's opinion and a sign in a Hispanic person's yard don't represent much, no offense.

Nobama girl,
Hispanics are overwhelmingly Catholic. Catholics are usually Democrat, and small towns=small minds. That is their reason for voting for McCain, because they're bitter and can't stand to see change. Not because they're tired of "big city welfare projects". Yes, my opinion is relevant because I've lived in a small town before.
Oh, and if you're going to talk about Lincoln freeing slaves, Kennedy helped perpetuate the Civil Rights Movement.

Aah yeah, Clinton protected us from terrorism. That is why he disbanded the Muslim terrorist task force. By shifting the primary threat from Muslims flying planes into buildings to pirating of music Cd's.lol. The men of the USS Cole would love to hear from you also.

Hmmm...
I wish they would have touched on something alittle deeper.
I know very well there are latinos not voting for Obama just because he is black.
(God knows there are rednecks voting that way.) - 1 year ago

Oh I see.
Republicans freed the slaves and "oppointed" (that's how you're spelling it right?) African Americans to positions in government in the distant, distant (post civil war) past; ironically TODAY they are the most resilient party to any ethnic or racial minority IN THIS PRESENT TIME PERIOD. They serve them in zero way.Rather than a few, there are a crap load of Democratic Hispanic Politicians.
Democrats are not Christians since when? Just because someone doesn't run primarily on "freedom and patriotism", religion, and "family values" doesn't mean they don't have them. However, it's far more admirable they don't actually. They must have evolved a few chambers in their brain to know those NONE issues are worthless in qualification for president.
And I guess McCain is gunning for the racist, willfully ignorant, REDNECK heroin crowd who have to pay for their small town heroin addiction clinics.

Yeah, that "Republicans Freed The Slaves" argument is the most irrelevant thing I've heard to date.
Thinking about republican ethics today vs. back then... the irony is unbelievable.

Yeah, Nobamagirl?
The Republican party also supported a president who was too busy golfing and picking his nose to read a memo that would have enabled him to prevent September 11th, so... tell the people who lost their children, spouses, and parents on that day that the Republican party is still the party that "freed the slaves." Somehow, Lincoln's integrity doesn't quite register in the mind of today's Neo-Republican.
(And regarding 9/11 - Never forget that multiple terrorist attacks were thwarted during the Clinton administration because he was actually doing his job and protecting this country. It may not be a sore point for you, but trust me, if you had to mourn your loved one's loss with the rest of your city, you might care a little about the human lives lost on that day, and the fact that the whole thing could have been prevented if only our president had not had his head up his ass.)
My point is, any positive that was done by the republican party in the past has absolutely been more than eclipsed a hundred times over by Baby Bush's travesty of a presidency. He has painted the Republican party in a brand new light, and its not pretty. He's been the face of your party for the past 8 years, and face it - to most Americans, Bush represents nothing but incompetence and death. He is the most hated American president... ever. People think of HIM when they think "Republican" - not Lincoln. Trust me.
I am one of millions of former independent or undeclared voters who, after witnessing the Bush regime for 4 years, signed up as a lifelong democrat in time for the 2004 primaries.
Take a big whiff, nobamagirl. Your party doesn't smell like roses anymore.

Well the Republican party freed the slaves, appointed the first African American to an important position in government. Republicans are primarily Christians as Hispanics are devoutly. There are a few Republican Hispanic politicians. McCain got amnesty for some of them. So...yeah I don't think the silver tongued Viper has much of a chance with the Hispanic vote. He is working on the BONGERS vote. If they remember he has a slight chance. But Rural Americans overwhelmingly reject him. So..well see what happens.Small town America is sick of paying for BIG city welfare projects.

Being an immigrant, I have seen many of the issues facing Latinos here first-hand. In my experience, I have seen that mostly immigrant Latinos are drawn to the Republican party because of the desire for assimilation and because the of the party's (christian) moral values. Children of immigrants (often brought to the U.S. young) and second-generation immigrants tend to lean more towards the Democratic party because they see themselves as Americans facing various social issues that the party has a tendency to focus on.

that street performance bumper was dope.
i wonder what people make of Wendy Carrillo's claim that Latinos might be drawn to the Republican party because of a desire to be more fully assimilated.
additionally, why are Latinos typically drawn to the Democratic Party?

BooksBrown:
I think Latinos are drawn to the Democratic party because Democrats have always been more "idealistic" and I think they see this idealism as a means to an end, they feel it will solve the injustices done to their people. Democrats have always worked harder for lesser-income families as well, which a lot of immigrants are.
