Artificial trees capture solar and wind energy

"A London-based startup called Solar Botanic announced yesterday that it has designed lifelike artificial plants and trees that harvest the power of the sun, wind and rain. The key to the company’s claim is its Nanoleaf— a supposed energy-capturing powerhouse.

The Nanoleaf contains photovoltaic and thermovoltaic cells that capture the sun’s energy, as well as voltaic twigs and branches that create electricity whenever they are stretched or compressed by the wind.

Unfortunately, neither the Solar Botanic press release or website says exactly how much power an artificial tree or plant can create. But the company estimates that an average-sized tree with a 6 sq meter canopy could generate enough energy for a single household.

In addition to powering homes, Solar Botanic envisions its creation powering motorways, suburban streets, and parks—anywhere that groups of trees are often found..."

    • These energy trees will help to clean our air, as some of them have a nozzle air system, to suck in air and take out the co2 and to release clean air. The cool the air and bring shade. Studies predict that solar panels and parabolic sun collectors are beaming much of their collected heat straight back into space.
I don't care what others think, but I prefer I artificial tree in front of my house, it better then this wind turbine were looking at the moment.
      check out their website www.solarbotanic.com

    • I would like to know thier energy output, that would probably determine how well these trees are accepted by people and wether they are worth thier having. Neat idea, it beats looking at a giant propellor.

    • fucking amazing!!

i had a dream about this about a week ago

everyone's houses were built like little domes into the earth and were totally sustainable, each home had their own micro biosphere

water was tapped from the roots of trees

and energy harnessed by their leaves

      so cool!

    • Great Idea. It is probably really expensive and expensive to repair! This is the right direction. And for te folks saying to plant real trees, I don't believe these will replace real trees. No need to worry

    • I guess we have to put artifical trees in due to all the destruction that has been caused to mother earth over the years to places like the Rain forest and enviromental zones big oil and logging corps raped and robbed

    • Awesome step and if the energy per tree is to a household, totally wicked and should be turned into a REDWOOD per neighborhood or community.
      great idea and great post.

    • I spoke with one of the developers, they want to use their trees also to protect and to re-introduce lost species. Because these energy trees do not compete for water, but give protection against sun and wind. think about the middle east were they can be used to re-introduce the Ghaf tree and the ebri. These energy trees can pump water and desalinate it. I think it a great opportunity especially because they use recycled plastic as well and old car tires. let's hope they come soon

    • I love trees. I hate people who don't. To bad thats all the world is going to consist of, "artificial Trees". My heart is broken.

    • Think for a moment...

(a forest interspersed with these artificial and natural trees as well as wind turbines and solar panels.)

...it is a great idea that would cut down greenhouse gas emissions instead of trees while at the same time promoting the environment.

[The irony would be cutting down a natural stand of trees to install a set of these power converters.]

...I just wonder at weather or are they not rain proof and if we can fool woodland creatures who might live in them.

It seems to me to be a more attractive alternative. It may prove to be a solution to a more sustainable way of life; as oppose to continually producing nuclear waste, carbon dioxide, smog and acid rain.

    • I'd like to come back a thousand years from now. There might not be any real trees left, and I'd like to see how much it affects the earth and its species. Would be trippy.

    • This is interesting, but I agree that we should also be planting real trees as well. I think I'd only go for this if the company offered to plant two real trees for every fake one...

    • This company should do a program with a group for planting real trees where the fake tree company plants one of theirs for every so many rel trees thre other company raises money to plant. It could turn into a big thing that get both points being made on this topic solved and benefits all. If you got passed all the money-making crap part to actually make a difference in this world.

    • I find this cool but a waste of time and money. Imagine if all the money spent on this project was put towards planting trees on bare lots. Now that's a good way to spend some money.

    • Why not just plant real trees? Is this entire world now going to be filled with artificial trees, plants, and crops? Real trees act as carbon sinks and that is what we need now. Would these trees act as carbon sinks? Provide food? Enrich the soil? What about the behavior of other species? How would it affect those that would see it as real and seek to use it for sustenance? Don't real trees also already convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis? I usually am for any kind of solar venture, but I see this as a money making scheme. We already have a great means to provide solar power that we need to get to market now. I would also hope it goes through safety tests before being put out to the public... not like GM crops and other fake organisms already being let loose in our environment.

    • JanforGore:

But you cant say its a bad idea! instead of using gas power we can use our own single tree as our source, lowering carbon emissions

imagine how many houses have enough of a garden for one tree?
im not saying planting real trees is bad, but if this idea lowers emissions across the world then surely its not a bad thing?

    • JanforGore:

yea, i think this is a great idea. One of the problems with current solar technology is that the panels take up a large space, like your roof, and they are ugly. If you can have a way to power your home for free (after the initial purchase) and the power source is a fake tree that most people can't tell is fake. And if one tree that size really can power a single household then they must be very efficient. I also like the idea of the twigs bending creating electricity, I wonder how they did that.

    • JanforGore:

Oh no, I'm not saying it is a 'bad' idea... at least it is an idea. I'm just a bit leary about these inventions that deem to infringe on the natural world. I would rather have solar panels on my roof and plant a real tree is all I'm saying. And real trees lower emissions as well, especially old growth forests... which is why we need to stop cutting down the rainforests. I doubt this company could even make enough artificial trees to make up for that loss. I fear we may feel that we need to get away from nature in order to save it.

    • This is just the beginning of a very exciting transition in history! It's enough with the doom and gloom - let's move into this new age of developing the potential of man to live in harmony with the planet.

    • Seems like a transitional thing to make us feel like we still live in a natural and breathing world. When trees can be replaced, perhaps those people won't care about fake trees and just get rid of them altogether.

    • it's a great idea. however, nothing beats the real thing. it's still best to plant "real" trees rather than spend a fortune developing "artificial" trees to capture solar and wind energy.

    • densmanila:

yeah but I don't think the two are comparable. real trees *don't* capture wind and solar energy, at least that we can use, and no machine can replace the part a real tree plays in our environment and eco-system.

I still think this is a better idea than all the dingbats planting long suffering trees out here in the desert! All that water just to have a ragged half dead tree in your yard! WTF!!

Unfortunately, this is very short-sighted of you. Sure, it does not compare to a real tree, but name a species of real tree that produces electricity for human consumption. It also lays to rest any argument about how hideous wind farms would be. Shade-grown crops would also benefit from this technology.

    • That's an interesting idea. I mean, it's not like just about every house has fake plants inside, why not one outside that gives you energy to boot.
