The star of the final presidential debate was Joe Wurzelbacher, aka “Joe the Plumber.” John McCain mentioned Wurzelbacher tonight shortly after the debate began, and both he and Obama said his name more than 25 times during the 90-minute debate. How many times did the word Iraq come up? Six. How many times was the word economy used? 16.

So, what makes Joe the Plumber so special? Well, Obama met Wurzelbacher on Sunday, just shortly after landing in Toledo, Ohio. Before heading to his hotel for an intensive two days of debate prep, the campaign organized a quick stop in Holland, Ohio. The plan was for Obama to walk down Shrewsbury Street, knock on doors, and ask people to vote. For all intents and purposes, it was a photo op.

But then Joe came into the picture, a burly, middle-aged guy with a goatee, who approached Obama and asked him if he believes in the American dream. He proceeded to tell Obama that, after working as a plumber for 15 years, he is going to purchase his own business. The catch was that the business was worth more than $250,000 and Joe asked if he would be taxed more under Obama’s plan.

“I’m being taxed more and more for fulfilling the American Dream,” he said to Obama.

While Obama made several attempts to explain his tax plan, the bottom line was always that Joe would suffer from increased taxes.

“I’m gonna cut taxes a little bit more for the folks who are most in need and for the 5% of the folks who are doing very well - even though they’ve been working hard and I appreciate that – I just want to make sure they’re paying a little bit more in order to pay for those other tax cuts,” Obama told Joe.

“It’s not that I want to punish your success – I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you – that they’ve got a chance at success too.”

Obama left the neighborhood right after the conversation with Joe, admitting that the conversation was good practice for the debate. Little did he know that this chance encounter was going to be the main flashpoint tonight.

    • You left out the part about spreading the wealth around. I've never made 250k either. What I don't understand is why you would have animosity toward anyone who does. I celebrate Joe. We need more Joes.

      U better check out the fact. Come to find out that Joe the Plumber don't make anywhere near 250k. He don't even have a plumbing license. Seems he is some sort of a plumbers apprentice and he owes back taxes. So much for Joe.

      We spread the wealth around every fucking day - its called local government. You're probably happy that 911 works for you, right? If you need help, you can get it. That's because through taxes, we ALL have made the service available.
      If you make over $250k a year, you're in a special place - good for you. Now give a damn about where we are as a country and help out. Then all those "little people" who cook your food, clean your home(s), work in your office(s), dryclean your clothes, care for your children, and even protect you and your property can rest a little bit easier at night and not be so damned resentful of your attitude towards them.

      umm, no I'm not. I get paid $8 an hour to work on Audio Visual equipment in the basement of a state university. Part Time. I wish I could work for the government, it seems to be the only way to ensure job security nowadays.
      I sure am happy to pay the taxes I do in order to have nicely paved roads, police officers and firemen to help me when i need it, and I understand that if I ever make it to a position in life where I make over $250k a year, I'll be more than happy to pitch in so that schools are properly funded, our libraries are stocked and manned, and that the important things to our future generations are available.

    • Joe the Plumber?? Lets get real .. Making 250K. Both My Wife and I have BS Degrees. I'm a Lab Scientist, she's a RN ...Have worked over 20years 10+ hours a day..NEVER have seen even close to 250k ...Hell I can even throw in my Mother in Laws wages(a VP @ a major Phila Hospital) and the 3 of us still cant come close to 250k.. Teachers,cops,firemen, most of America will not make that kinda money.Cry me a river Plumber . Making 250K a year great for You...but cut the rest of us a break!

      RIGHT!!!! Do you know why people HATE having to call the plumber--- They charge you out the ass for a simple and easy service. I am a 21 year old college student proudly employed at an ace hardware, been doing it for 4 years.... I know plumbing and plumbers very well ((none of them are rolling around with a quarter-million bankroll where I come from)). I dont know the man, but if I had to guess he swindled rich old people out of a lot of their undeserved money to make his ProbabLY undeserved money!! how about this... if you want to keep your FORTUNE tax free---from now on we will mandate you keep all your wealth as Cash in your home; and YOU personally can deffend it from the american mob made of the poor who when this economy plumits even further will ROB YOUR ASS just like you ROBBED THEIRS!! only the mobs crime will be out of neccessity and Big Joes crimes were based on greed................... oh, and Joe, since your King Shit plumber stacking your chips highest--You Most Be The Best--how about you bring those King Shit skills of yours to the THIRD WORLD and get some clean, safe drinking water to the thirsty and dehydrated of the world and do something respectable with your life other than sitting on your greedy ass trying to tear down the man who might just save this country!!!!!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!
