... as anti-war protesters scuffle with police during final TV debate

An agitated and angry John McCain threw everything he had at Barack Obama in their final presidential debate early today – but he still failed to land a knock-out blow on the unruffled Democrat frontrunner.

Desperate to give his flagging campaign a lift, the Republican nominee mixed a flurry of personal and policy attacks on his unflappable and sometimes bemused rival.

With an edgy mix of impatient eye-rolling and sidelong glares bordering on contempt, Mr McCain, 72, treated the 47-year-old Illinois senator like a naughty schoolboy, peppering him with jibes over the economy, abortion rights, healthcare and taxes.

As the televised joust got underway, anti-war protesters scuffled with police outside the debate venue.

Several protesters were arrested and others were injured by police on horseback.

McCain went toe-to-toe with Mr Obama over his links to ‘old, washed up terrorist’ William Ayers, a subject that was taboo in their two previous debates.

But Mr Obama, who today was shown to be ahead by 49 to 44 per cent in a new Reuters poll, refused to rise to his opponents’ taunts.

Pundits were mixed in their reaction to the most heated head-to-head confrontation yet at Long Island’s Hofstra University in New York, with Republican analysts praising Mr McCain’s punchy performance as a possible springboard for a comeback.

McCain's attempts to get a rise out of Obama did nothing. It really made me think about what a personal argument between Michelle and Barack would be like versus an argument between Cindy and John.

Seeing this picture on the news today should pretty much erase any respect the GOP had for McSame. The old fart acts like a petulant child on a sugar high.....

McCain was reacting to Schieffer. This had nothing to do with Obama. McCain was going around the table to shake Schieffer's hand and Schieffer reversed direction on him and went to the other side of the table from where Obama was headed. Much ado about nothing.

    Stopped watching the debates because:
    1) Same ol' dodge the question tactics
    2) No television
    3) This election no longer matters.

McCool did great! Thus, Obama's polls are down today. Obama side-stepped answers whenever called on anything, like his terrorist friends, and his dirtiness in his ads.... Obama always throws the race card like a spoiled brat whenever he drops in the polls then screams like it wasnt him who yelled race... that's so ghetto no matter how "eloquent or elite" people say he is ... Scary man! Also, I wont dignify the usual liberal name calling w/ an answer. Just exercising my freedom of speech by stating my opinion as guaranteed by my constitional rights. If by chance O does win, I hope we will still have that.

Oh Joyce, get over your we want a controlling socialist government. If you haven't noticed we already are socialist with all the taxes and without the benefits. And the last 8 years is THE most CONTROLLING of all governments we've had.
I frankly can't believe you want more of this, more control, more wars, more taxes yes I said that, because its only the rich who get the big tax breaks. I can't believe you want to lose every freedom you have under the constitution. Dare you to read Angler. Then get back to me k. BTW I'd be voting for Ron Paul if he was running.

Definition from Wikipedia: of Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating social or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and the creation of an egalitarian society.[1][2] Modern socialism originated in the late nineteenth-century working class political movement. Karl Marx posited that socialism would be achieved via class struggle and a proletarian revolution which represents the transitional stage between capitalism and communism.[3][4]

No we are NOT already a socialist society...We have also had a Democratic Congress the last few years of the administration that has also contributed to our present problems ... Yes, something has to change but I dont think it will come in the way of Obama. McCain has always been against the grain and is patriotic, which Obama, in my opinion, isnt by what I have seen and read of him ... and McC is not Cheney or Bush, thankfully. But I see Obama as also too green to lead this country and I think there will be too many pulling his strings. Also, BTW, I have read Angler and with an open mind among many other books on both sides... no one is innocent ... Another BTW I would vote for Ron Paul too if I thought he could beat these two big parties. I am a Liberaterian.
