The boat offered terminations under the Netherlands' more liberal abortion laws [EPA]
A Dutch organisation has anchored a boat offering abortions off the Spanish port of Valencia, circumventing Spanish abortion laws and prompting protest from anti-abortion activists.
The boat, floating in international waters, offered terminations under the Netherlands' more liberal abortion laws on Friday.
About 100 members of Provida, the Spanish anti-abortion group, were in the port to protest the arrival, some shouting "assassins" and "no to abortion", Spanish media said.
Police formed a barrier between them and hundreds of pro-abortion activists to prevent incidents.
Speaking in support of women seeking abortion, Pilar Bardem, an actress, called for "respect" for women who had made the "very difficult" decision to terminate a pregnancy.
Spain decriminalised abortion in 1985 but only for certain cases - up to 12 weeks of pregnancy after a rape; up to 22 weeks in the case of malformation of the foetus; and at any point if the pregnancy represents a threat to the physical or mental health of the woman.
But Spain's Socialist government last month said it plans to introduce a law that will offer greater legal protection for women who wish to have an abortion and doctors who carry out the procedure.
The Women on Waves ship visited Ireland in 2001, Poland in 2003 and Portugal in 2004, sparking protests in each country.

The future of America? Better start funding that Abstinence Ed.
-
Yep, we should massively expand funding to a program designed to reduce teen pregnancies but is actually strengthening the opposite effect.
-
Sex-ed is better than crapstinence - it's more successful.

I think it's awesome that Women on Waves is doing this, though abortion being legalized in these countries would obviously be preferable. Having an abortion is difficult enough without having to be on a boat that's rocking back and forth.

pro-abortion... wtf is that? last time I checked (and evidently a certain US presidential candidate needs to hear this) it was called pro-choice.
Quit polarizing... if you wouldn't get an abortion then use your prescious lifetime to get involved with the established alternatives that don't limit a woman's right to choose.

Why won't goverments get it ... look at how desperate women are to get abortions. If it was legal, it would be so much safer and women wouldn't have to go through ridiculous measures to get an abortion.

Wow, the idiotic extents you femi-nazis will go to in order to puree' a fetus.

I actually had an idea like that a really long time ago. Except that my idea would be more like a luxury cruise. The Abortion Cruise To The Bahamas. I didn't say this would be a GOOD thing, though. Did people consider things like medical liability in international waters?
-
It is so sad the measures women have to go through to get an abortion. My take on the whole legalisation of abortion, in any country or place, is that some women want them bad enough that they will try to do it themselves or go to "back-alley" places to get one, and that is just very unsafe, so they may as well make it legal and stay out of women's business.
-
Good for the Dutch! Sensible people. Abortion should not only be legal, it should be provided free-of-charge, with no parental notification, to all those who feel the procedure is necessary. It's the only sensible, humane policy. Women (and quite often, young girls) will seek out abortions regardless of legality. Why do "pro-lifers" always place a greater value on the fetus than they do on the women's health? FYI, that's a rhetorical question - I know the answer.
-
If Roe v Wade were ever overturned in the US, the deaths from illegal abortions would rise, once again.
People can preach abstinence and sex education all they want. But birth control pills, shots or other proven methods are the only thing that will really help young people. -
sounds dangerous to be doing on a boat, besides, if you don't want a baby keep that qaurter between your knees.

Liberal Extinction "Wow, the idiotic extents you femi-nazis will go to in order to puree' a fetus. "
That's not very professional, opinions are welcome man, but YOUR STATEMENT ABOVE is uneducated, unintelligent and rather hate charged. do all women getting abortions fall under the Femi-nazi?

Femi-nazis, puree a fetus! Do I dignify this with a comment? No, because I'd have to resort to Miss Potty Mouth.
