Colin Powell Slams McCain After Endorsing Obama

After his "Meet the Press" appearance, during which he endorsed Barack Obama, Colin Powell stopped to answer reporters' questions outside the studio. As it happens, his remarks were nearly as interesting after the program as they were during.

Powell was asked about the relentless negativity of the McCain campaign, and Powell made no effort to hide his disappointment. Perhaps most importantly, Powell noted that the constant right-wing efforts to a) falsely label Obama as a Muslim; and b) make "Muslim" some kind of slur, not only undermines national unity, but also damages America's standing in the world. "Those types of images going out on Al Jazeera are killing us around the world," Powell said.

SENSIBLE WORDS FROM AN EMINENTLY SENSIBLE MAN

If only the republican campaign would listen and heed, we need policy on the ecomony, real policy not back of a beermat maths, we need an exit strategy for our troops in the middle east, we need to help the huge swaths of poor americans, parts of our country looks like the third world, we need healthcare for everyone and education or all....we don't need fear, hate and violence....

    We need change
    We need Obama

Thank you Colin Powell, you have shown that you are deserving of our respect!

Focused, candid, articulate, broad minded, comfortable answering difficult questions, humane, diplomatic, with a comprehensive grasp of international relations, domestic priorities, and the backbone to say what he thinks.

Small wonder this man got so far up the chain of command.

Of course the neo-con hardliners now will have to smear him and thus further succeed in diminishing their own credibility.

    Nice.

It's really hard to deny the depth of character that Colin Powell possesses - he's taken a stand, and this is no small feat, considering who (and what) he's up against. One must admire him for having the courage and honesty to speak out against the despicable direction his party has taken. I believe that this is something that he has felt for some time, and finally he'd simply had enough! He speaks with such clarity on the current state of the campaign, and for this, I am sure he will be lambasted by those who have so much at stake - however it's hard to miss the truth , especially when it's spoken with such a calm, dignified demeanor. Good Man!

    nufsenuf,

What struck me in his ad hoc press encounter was his emphasis on more than just another election cycle, but a picture of decay, division and anything to win, which McCain and Palin project to the rest of world. It is a vision of pandemonium and panic.

Confidence in America abroad has been hammered over the last 8 years. And the collapse of housing, banking and Wall Street, and soon the derivatives market is sending allies to reconsidering further joint ventures, military or economic.

Who cares? Anyone with anything to buy or sell abroad. Any institution wanting money to restore a bankrupted economy. And anyone who needs a job!

Obama is cool-headed enough to project the ability and competence which opens doors.

Secretary Powell, like Senator Obama, projects depth and intensity of concentration.

    McCain\Palin?

There's too much at stake and Mr Powell, like him or no, is sagacious enough to know it..

And now Powell is getting slimmed from the right.

There are legitimate criticism of Powell, but these aren't among them.

I like where he said that our strength comes from unity from diversity -- We could sure use a lot more of that in our next 8 years.

We have too many problems to bicker about them. We need to get together, right and left, and move forward.

Colin Powell does indeed, have his eye on the big picture. In a time when the Republican party has apparently run out of ideas, and can only resort to name-calling and slander, he is calling for a return to civility and decency, AND for a return to a discussion of the real issues at hand in this crucial time.. .. AveryMoore, you have it exactly right - cool-headed, well-reasoned, capable and dignified - Barak Obama seems the epitome of these traits, and Colin Powell obviously recognizes that this is what's called for in a time such as this!

since we still live in a free society, then he has every right to endorse who ever he wants. After the way the Bush admin lied to him and used him, its no wonder he went with the other party candidate.

One more reason this man of honor and dignity should once again be Secretary of State. There is no limit to what he could accomplish in an administration that is concerned about our position in the global community. The current administration did General Powell a terrible disservice by supplying him with false information.

I thought he handled it very well. He seemed to feel bad that he couldn't endorse McCain.

I'm very happy to see a man of such incredible honesty and dignity endorse Obama and pretty much snub the RNC in the process.

I'm certain it was a difficult thing for him to do. I am truly impressed with his willingness to boldly go where no General has gone before! Kudos Powell!

The "Repugnants," who have hijacked the Republican Party, are driving all their Moderates like CP to the Democratic Party, at least for this election cycle. If Barack Obama goes into his first term with a really strong mandate and a Filibuster proof Congress, not the stolen mandate Bu$hCo claimed in 2000, and if President Obama is able to accomplish the difficult tasks he will face very well, then perhaps those moderate conservatives will stay blue for awhile. Maybe the Green Party will rise to new prominence in the years to come?

Personally, I think the "Repugnants" are killing the Republican Party. Lets hope repugnants within the Democratic Party don't win either. Repugnances in any form are antithetical to Democratic or Republican principles. Repugnants wish to destroy both ideals, and substitute misery in their place.

Let Barack Obama be the hope for a dream come true, a dream of true peace and happiness for all.

After 8 awful years in the political pig-pen the public and a portion of the bureaucratic elite has seen enough corruption, flying mud and lies.

Some years back a guy from Ukraine told me that he fled his homeland with his family because he realized that here, we were slow to make mistakes and slow to learn from them.

    That made him move?

Yes. The difference, he said, is here you do learn from your mistakes. In the Soviet Union learning such lessons sent you to the Gulags and hope of improvement always was crushed.
