McCain concedes Colorado, Iowa, New Mexico: places all bets on Pennsylvania

Image...
According to CNN and Time, McCain is conceding (pulling out of?) Colorado, Iowa, and New Mexico and placing his bets that he will overcome a 10 point Obama lead in Pennsylvania.

It is important to note that CO, IA, and NM have a total of 21 electoral votes and were all carried by Bush in 2004. Pa. which has 21 electoral votes, was carried by Kerry, Gore and Clinton.

This is what CNN's Chief National Corespondent John King had to say...

"Most people top in the McCain campaign now believe New Mexico and Iowa are gone, that Barack Obama will win New Mexico and Iowa. They are now off the dream list of the McCain campaign. More interestingly, most top people inside the McCain campaign think Colorado is gone."

"So they are now finishing with a very risky strategy. Win Florida. Win Nevada ... And here is the biggest risk of all -- yes they have to win North Carolina, yes they have to win Ohio, yes they have to win Virginia, trailing or dead-even in all those states right now. But they are betting Wolf on coming back and taking the state of Pennsylvania. It has become the critical state now in the McCain electoral scenario. And they are down 10, 12, and even 14 points in some polls there. But they say as Colorado, Iowa and other states drift away, they think they have to take a big state. 21 electoral votes in Pennsylvania, Wolf, watch that state over the next few weeks."

------
Obama is leading by 5 points in Colorado, 13 points in Iowa, 10 points in New Mexico, 7 points in Virgina and 3 points in Nevada.

So what do you think, great plan, or doomed to fail?

Ps.on a personal note, I live in NJ and i don't think there's any real chance of him winning here or Pa.

He is down 10-14 points in Pennsylvania so why is he trying to make up ground there? Concentrating in other states where the race is closer would make sense, but hey I'm not rooting for him to win so it doesn't matter.

McCain is said to be a betting man, i think he is betting on a combination of high voter turnout in rural areas for him (or really Sarah Palin) and a higher then expected turnout for him in the suburbs of Pennsylvania.

Very risky strategy, if he pulls it off it's genius and dumb luck all at the same time. If he doesn't it's probably one of the worst decisions his campaign has ever made.

He thinks that he'll be able to overcome the double-digit lead Obama has here? Not on my watch.

I do support McCain but I too wonder about the strategy. I'd love to be a fly on the wall to hear how both candidates decide how and when on all their decisions. It's got to be very exciting.

Oh well......I've just got to go with the man who has PROVEN over and over his loyalty to our country. Go McCain/Palin!!!

Its not a gambit I'm surprised by. The debates, Powell Endorsement, Palin interviews, The erratic behaviour from McCain the economic crises, the extremely negative candor of the campaign from the McCain campaign, and the unrivaled unpopularity of the Bush administration have combined into an electoral nightmare for his campaign. Right now if he's happy for anything it's that he doesn't have to worry as he had earlier in the year that even Alaska was going to loose Senate seats and could have went for the democrats. At the moment the only tangible Palin effect is a hardening of support in Alaska and the mountain west excluding Colorado. Perhaps she provides a boost in volunteerism in traditional red states like Indiana, Virginia, and North Carolina. However uping the ground game this late in the eletion is too little too late to counteract the biggest and best organized political field operation in American history. It is very foolish to pull out of Colorado.however as it has certain red tendencies and again may have been bolstered by the Palin pick conceding the state only works as an insult that drives the polls further in Obama's favor. As for pensylvania having the third senator from the state and Hillary Clinton working the state is perhaps too powerful a force to countermand.

He will steal florida just like Bush did, He is already attempting surpression in Virginia and Ohio.

I don't think he will succeed, and I don't think the Bush administration believe he will succeed, or why would so many of them be planing to vote Obama, either Publicly or Privately

He should just roll it in and wait out these last few days with some dignity, I started the year voting Republican, but McCain Palins dirty tricks and filthy campaign have switched me and all (every last one) of my family and friends to Obama.

We are middle class and upper middle class white voters, some of us may well pay more tax, but we all have to pull together and if that means a little more tax then I will happily pay it.

I think Sen. McCain has the experience, the judgement and the character to know.....when to leave the stage with at least a little dignity left!

You know, now that it's almost all over I think I'm actually going to miss John ranting about how Sen. Obama was an America-hating terrorist Muslim socialist.

It was a positive and inspiring message and I'm surprised it didn't connect with more people.

    Goodbye, John!

When speaking of being behind in the polls, Senator McCain said that this was right where he wanted to be.
I don't believe that for a New York minute.

If MCCAIN wants to save any dignity at all and carry on the tradition of honorable military men in his family, he should just admit that the Bush policies and choice for V.P.. the pitiful laughing stock of America who was supposed to represent the women of America has cost him the election. Pack it up and go back to Arizona while he still has some character left and for goodness sake send his flaky Maverick back to Alaska. Did anyone tell her they found some more dinosaur fossils? Wonder if there were any human footprints inside them?

If I have anything to say about it (and I do, damnit) I am not going to let McCain win in PA.
Good thing I registered a few weeks ago as a PA resident!

I'm not claiming CNN is incorrect, but I do believe they are in general fairly Democratic leaning. It would be easy to imagine this "report" as simply a speculative propaganda piece.

I don't believe at this point in time either candidate would publicly say they were abandoning any state, regardless of what the polls say. It would just make them look vulnerable. I don't recall any sources being named in this "report" either.

If he's conceding Iowa, New Mexico, and Colorado, he might as well concede the whole election.
