In a really interesting article from the Los Angeles Times, young Sarah Heath is described as quiet, if shy, and eager to escape Alaska. The former star athlete enrolled in no college sports, and although she was eventually a journalism major, no articles with her byline were published in the school paper.
One former dormmate remembers her as "upbeat and fun," but also as a dependable friend who seldom "partied" with other students. Another former dormmate, when reminded that she herself had been Heath's close friend in college, admits that she "honestly... [has] no idea who she was." But Maryline Blackburn (Miss Alaska 1984), remembers the fellow pageant contestant as conniving.
Heath also put herself through college -- her 'Miss Congeniality' pageant win paid for two semesters of education -- carefully saving money, working summers in restaurants and on her boyfriend Todd Palin's fishing boat. In a journalism class at North Idaho College, the reserved Sarah Heath discovered that she was fearless in front of the camera.

Exactly. I thought the piece was extremely humanizing. The Sarah Palin we read about now is headstrong, extremely bold, and fervently ambitious. She is depicted, in a way, as every bit the pageant queen we hear about: someone who was always pretty and charming and successful.
I think the article makes her college history a lot less enigmatic -- I'd be willing to guess that Palin jumped from school to school not just because she was a fish out of water, as you say, but also because of money matters -- but it makes Sarah Palin, the person, much more enigmatic. It also makes her, for me anyway, a lot more likable again.

Huh, interesting to hear another take seeing as most media has made her out to be Ms Popular Socialite.
It seems as though when out of her comfort zone she kind of withdrew.
Interesting read for sure, definitely intriguing to see a different side than the one thats been painted of her.
