Oh, they knew better. They, like the author said, so hoped that there would be more bitter angry narrowminded bigots to manipulate. What they are realizing, much to their chagrin, is that there are more people bigoted against dumb and senile than black skin.

Frank Rich flippantly excuses Obama for ''throwing his grandma under the bus'' in support of Wright before throwing Wright under the bus for not changing into something he never was; non-bigoted.
Obama got a nice Harvard education and headed the Law Review. He attended a church for almost 20 years, but never caught on to the theme? Maybe Frank can explain that. -
Appologies to Mr. Conrad, but I don't feel I've done anything that requires defense. I wonder if Senator Obama, the post-racial candidate as he is said to be, will ever stop playing the race card.

JohnA...it's not that YOU have done something that requires defense by being born white, it is not a choice you get to make, no one gets that choice...but,there is a history of inequality in our country that many white people are perfectly fine ignoring because it benefits them. As a human I find it to be wrong...as a white person, I refuse to stay ignorant that I have certain advantages that are not earned but ascribed to me based on my skin color....it's not right, and I, at the very least, have the responsibility to acknowledge it. Thank you for your comment, but I don't think Obama is playing the race card...everyone else is making a bigger deal out of race than he is.

thanks for saying so clearly what others cannot... we have certainly come a very long way but the scars of this country's past run deep.
Ever notice how now that there is an African American running, he is being called elitist... although most of our modern presidents are Ivy League educated as well? Maybe the expectation is that he wasnt entitled to that sort of education... and the claims that his tax plan amounts to welfare (sure no racist stereotype there)
Anyway, thanks for being a voice of reason.
