Both candidates tout 'clean coal'- but it doesn't exist!
Talk about lipstick on a pig. Clean Coal is apparently an oxymoron that both party's candidates can support. Saying it's clean doesn't make it clean. Come on Barack, come on John. Can one of you show some leadership on this issue and stop parroting the coal industry's coal-is-great message? Coal mining is an environmental disaster and coal burning is a climate change disaster.
The technology simply doesn't exist. We're decades away from Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The Energy Department just pulled the plug on the $1.8 billion FutureGen project, previously slated to be the first coal-fired plant with CCS.
Architecture 2030's report, The 2030 Blueprint, Solving Climate Change Saves Billions, reveals that our buildings are responsible for three quarters of our electricity use. The report calculates that building energy efficiency can produce electricity (by reducing demand) at 1/6th the cost of Coal with CCS (and one fifth the cost of nuclear).
While coal with CCS is at least 20 years out and a single nuclear plant takes 8 to 12 years to get online, energy efficiency measures can be implemented today - at today's prices with off-the-shelf materials, appliances and equipment.

So, will those who agree that clean coal is an oxymoronic (with emphasis on moronic) toxic hoax perpetrated by the coal industry to keep doing business as usual under their cap and trade schemes hold MCain's and Obama's feet to the fire on it regardless of who is "elected?" Will planet come before party?

So why did Joe Biden say he wasn't for clean coal on that line, and then in the debate say he was? Why did the Obama campaign smack him on the wrist for actually giving the RIGHT answer on that line? Senator Biden, if you really do not support clean coal and know it is a hoax, SAY IT PLEASE. People need to hear the truth from at least ONE politican in this race in the two moneyed parties. I would respect that much more than these soundbite games from ALL of these candidates trying to play both sides. Peoples' lives depend on that truth.

And the MSM is also instrumental in spreading this lie as well for profit. "Clean coal" even sponsored the debates. But yet, people who bring this out without political bias are ignored in general, especially by the media and political partisans. Why is that? If you know clean coal is a deceptive misleading hoax that will continue to desecrate this planet and human health and contribute to climate catastrophe, why does the party saying it is right matter?
MSM... WRONG. John McCain... WRONG. Sarah Palin... WRONG. Barack Obama... WRONG. Joe Biden... ? Slip of the tongue of true feelings on a rope line that he should be able to say in a debate! All many of us who put this planet first want is TRUTH. Where is it?

a million cars of coal are loaded each week on one railroad alone. If we didnt use coal where would we get that energy from? BOTH candidates will back the use of coal and there is NOTHING you can do about it and thats just the way it is......CHOO-CHOO....THE COAL TRAIN RIDES ON. We must use coal in a clean manner and we will.

Here is a BS McCain ad that actually claims Obama is not for clean coal when he has stated many times that he is. Does EITHER side in this really then give a damn about this planet over the game? Or is "clean coal" now only one of a multitude of soundbite phrases used to ensnare people in BS.
How many people who are at any of these rallies who hear the words "clean coal" even know what is being talked about? So once again we have a breakdown in our media that shovels out BS and lies, and polticians who actually perpetuate those lies. So what are people in the grassroots who know the truth supposed to do?
Again, "clean coal" does not exist. There is NO current technology called CCS currently available or working in America. CCS will not be available for at least 20 years and even then if this planet survives without coming to a tipping point, there are still many questions regarding its storage and the exhorbitant cost of it besides enforcement of any laws regarding it or its storage and potential hazard to groundwater sources.
So why can't we the American people get some straight talk on this from any candidate? Why does it seem that the only two candidates getting the MSM coverage parrot the MSM coverage? How is it "change" to allow them to get away with it?

Jan, I agree with you WHOLEHEARTEDLY. "Clean Coal" is such a load of crap! Utter lies.
It is the ONE issue I am frustrated by about Obama. But I think it is posturing, and he'll oppose it once in office.
Regardless, a technology that is NOT proven and NOT viable anytime soon is hardly 'Clean', let alone REAL!
-
Clean coal is the biggest oxymoron of the century.
Clean Coal is like saying, safe sulfuric acid, or clean shit.
-
Boiling this down to the candidates...
You all certainly believe that McCain is for clean coal, right?
He says it and you believe him.Shockingly, Obama says he*s for clean coal, too.
BUT, given that he*s a lefty, how can this be true, you ask!
Simple... John McCain is shooting straight, telling the truth. You may not agree with him but he tells the truth!
Obama lies through his teeth pandering to everybody and anybody. This dude cannot be trusted!
This really isn*t about if coal is clean or not.
It*s about who you can trust.
-
You can't trust McCain or Obama when it comes to "Clean Coal". This is a fallacy, a marketing gimmick to sell pollution and call it clean. There is no such thing as clean coal.
Its like taking sewer water, filtering and bottling it and calling it "Spring Water".
-
<sigh> I just want a candidate who tells the TRUTH TO GET ELECTED. Is that too much to ask? The people deserve better than this and so do our children. Solar and wind in places such as Appalachia are what candidates should be addressing in their environmental agenda! I think many people in these areas are waiting for a new start and cleaner, safer, economic ways to create energy that create jobs as well as saves their lives. THAT is what I believe they want and need to hear from a candidate.

And one main point overlooked by these candidates in this as well is that regardless of the so called "technology" used at the smokestack, mountaintop removal will still continue. How then does that balance out any so called CO2 saved in a smokestack to be buried underground with the coal ash and toxic waste that will continue to pollute our rivers and cause cancer and other diseases in our people? So again, where is the truth?

I think it's great that you're bringing this info to current Jan. Most people hear the words "Clean Coal" or "Safe Nuclear" and simply assume that they are clean and safe. As it turns out that's simply false.
Now to emphasize a point, why have 33% voted this down?-

Jubal:
A yellow banner is going across this post in my current section telling me this post is under review and has therefore been hidden. I have not received any sort of contact or information on why that is from anyone on the staff of this site.
So again I ask: WHY is this thread under review and being hidden? If it is because of Obama you can be sure I will be contacting people about this. It is totally unfair and unDemocratic to treat people in a poltically biased way on a public forum where all opinions are supposed to be welcome.

Down with Coal!!!!!!!
-
I am not in favor of any type of substance that generates power....I lived on the bay and watched tug-boats loaded with coal going back and forth to our Gulf Power Plant.
I have always be concerned about nuclear power...a lot of people may not remember the 'meltdown' that happend many years back. The ugly truth is, gas, oil, coal, nuclear ALL have downsides.
My county is one of the highest CANCER rates for some odd reason. But we have to come up with alternate things such as wind, solar (which is HUGE if we could harness that energy). To do away with all these things without replacements would be 'fatal' to people's lives as well as jobs.we simply have to be patient and hope the next president will make it a priority.
