The threat comes a day after military officers from the two Koreas held brief talks at the heavily fortified border, their second official contact since the North broke off inter-Korean relations in February.
The North threatened to cut off all ties if the "confrontational racket" continues, citing a South Korean general's recent threats to launch a pre-emptive strike against its nuclear sites and the refusal of civic activists in the South to heed Pyongyang's demands to cease distribution of propaganda leaflets critical of its leadership.
"The puppet authorities had better remember that the advanced pre-emptive strike of our own style will reduce everything opposed to the nation and reunification to debris, not just setting them on fire," the North's military said in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency.
Tensions
Relations between the two Koreas have been tense since South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's administration took office earlier this year pledging to get tough with Pyongyang.
Earlier this month, Gen. Kim Tae-young, chairman of South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a parliamentary committee that his military was prepared to attack suspected nuclear sites in North Korea if the communist country attempts to use its atomic weapons on the South.
North Korea has demanded that South Korea stop activists from sending balloons carrying leaflets critical of the communist regime across the border, saying the flyers violate a 2004 inter-Korean accord banning propaganda warfare.
The South Korean government has stopped official propaganda but says it cannot prohibit activists from sending the leaflets, citing freedom of speech.
Leaflets floated over border to North
Defying Pyongyang's demands, South Korean activists on Monday sent helium balloons carrying 100,000 leaflets to the North. Some noted Kim's reported health troubles and called for the North Korean people to rise up against the authoritarian leader.
The North said it also was offended by recent comments by South Korean Defense Minister Lee Sang-hee about leader Kim Jong Il's health.

Now that Bush just starts wars whenever he feels like it. The rest of the world decided to start too.
Listen people WWIII is not the answer, let's talk.
I'm sure by the end of WWIII we would have all fought so hard against each other that the world would cease to exist. Or all of our countries will all be unlivable. So let's just negotiate for peace.

Where is President Obama? He should go over and talk them into being peaceful. He's already decided he's won. Why not start working now?
-
Palin can see North Korea from Alaska anyways...there is nothing to worry about guys.

Why isn't America doing something to stop this terrorist?

Sounds like more of the same from N/S Korea -- and gee, just when we took N Korea off our 'Axis Of Evil' list, too....
-
North Korea has an almost 100% literacy rate, so they can easily be indoctrinated with leadership worship, so sending leaflets is very productive.
Did you know that it is "mandatory" that when you pass by a statue of Kim Il Sung or hi son Kim Jung Il you must bow before it in respect to his magnificence, and that Kim Il Sung's writings (rants) are considered scripture.
-
i wonder what America will do? they got their ass kicked last time
-
this is fine by me, it means we get an excuse to wipe out north korea. they know they can't attack anybody, its just more talks.
-
Herroooo
And I dont think anyone should tell Bush about this. He's the kind of person that would think its a good idea to start ANOTHER war for nooooooooooooooo reason, just before he leaves office. If history teaches us anything, america should stay the fuck out of anyone elses conflict.
Arent N & S seperate countries, or is this civil war? I think they could just ignore them, rather than planning on destroying them.
-
Actually N. Korea has the military capability to attack S. Korea,I wonder if the S.Koreans' have the stones to fight. If it starts the US has an obligation by treaty to defend S.Korea; so then what do the Chinese do? They are the true wild card, they won't be able to deal with the refuge crisis so they would have to try to seal their border or fight alongside N. Korea. If it starts Jammer I would expect you to be first in line at the recruiting office. That is asuming you are under the age of 42.

Hasn't North Korea been threatening the South for years and years? They are technically at war, so the military has to make some sort of threat every now and then...just to keep everybody in the loop...

That picture is boss. If only Bush could pose like that. He'd be a lot more intimidating than he is now.
Anyway, while I'm sure he's just using scare tactics, I'm really scared for the people of North Korea when the world they know that revolves around Kim Jong Il is proven not to be the savior they once thought.
There's going to be a lot of fallout. -
Intimadation is the tool when you don't have democracy. :D Even the Chinese leaders are posing affectionate.
Why would China want US to fail?? Trust me, a lot of us just want Korea or Japan to fail, at most. I find them silly. US is the biggest buyer of our product, we have an enormous amount of your national debt. We will probably face a huge crisis if the US fails. And China doesn't have the power to take over the world if US fails. (And seriously, we don't want to. It doesn't fit our philosophy. So please, do all the dirty and hard work for the world:D)
There won't be a war, there is too much at risk. Both US and China, let alone Russia would never let the war starts. DPRK listens to China like China used to do with USSR. They had to respect Beijing's decisions and opinions. Besides there is Japan. The relationship between China, DPRK, Korea and Japan is so delicate. And, maybe North Korea will starve to death if China don't send any food to them should the war brake out.
North just threaten. They are doing this to show their citizens that they are strong, where the fact is to the absolute contrary.
-
that there is a HEAVY proposition, and a serious one at that. That North Korea is crazy, i wonder if its something in their water.

n. koreans are great people , i'm sure , and it would stand as another sad example of man's inhumanity to man were we to obliterate their homeland , but i'm not from n. korea , so i can't really pull for their team when their dictator pisses me off . if they could get rid of him before we had to that would be great , a win win all round .
-
why they still talking about comunism like its bad... comunism isnt bad, its the leaders that are bad.
