Republican takes swipe at McCain

New England's lone House Republican appears to have publicly broken with his party's standard-bearer, saying John McCain has not run a clean campaign and is likely to lose his bid for the presidency.

"I just don't see how [McCain] can win," Connecticut Rep. Chris Shays told the Yale Daily News earlier this week. "He has lost his brand as a maverick; he did not live up to his pledge to fight a clean campaign." Shays, who in 2006 became the only Republican congressman from New England, perennially finds himself in a heated re-election race.

The comments are the latest in a string of Republicans who have publicly criticized the Arizona senator's handling of the presidential race and predicted his defeat next week is all but certain. (Other Republicans joining the chorus include Former Maryland Sen. Charles Mathias, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.)

Fellow Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl and former GOP presidential Candidate Mitt Romney also have reportedly said they think McCain is likely to lose. Jon Kyl denied making the comments, though the Arizona Daily Star later produced audio indicating he did.

In his Yaale Daily News interview, Shays did not endorse Barack Obama, and said he remained skeptical the Illinois senator will govern from the center if he is elected president.

“It’s what all presidents should do, but [Obama] has never been there,” he said of Obama's ideological orientation.

Shays is a co-chairman of McCain's campaign efforts in Connecticut.

    • Chris Shays is one of the RINOs I am going to be targeting for REMOVAL from Republican politics starting Wednesday.

Fur Shur, I'm not a McCainiac either, but now's not the time to badmouth John. It's not the time to badmouth Chris either, but Wednesday is, and he's at the top of the list.

I will be running a weekly thread at FR devoted to otherwise obscure Democrats who need to be brought out into the daylight so we can see them.

Senator Carper will be first. No one knows who he is, what he does, how he represents DuPont and the credit card companies, or how many women he dates. We will be researching all those things and posting them in a relatively incoherent stream of consciousness.

Every now and then I'll do a thread ending wrap up on these guys.

    • Poor X-type. Be honest. Look at yourself.

      I see you've edited out

"“In two days it will be over (not a week! LOL again~) “

That's a perfect 'McCain gaffe' and face it no one takes advice from a person who doesn't know how many days there are in a week.

Once again you've gone and gotten yourself worked up over nothing while hiding the details. But no one's asking you to read anything you don't want to, are they? And what's this nonsense about lying? Show.

Why feel forced to look? I never asked you to respond, in fact I asked you not to. And assumed with your two "BYEs!" that you were finished with the thread.

X-type, why do you keep battering your own credibility with trash talk after writing "guess you dont believe in free speech. I usually state facts that can be substantiated... "

Facts? Like what? Where are they? Free speech? You hate free speech. If anything disturbs your prejudices you can barely stay awake long enough to express your inflamed sense of being wronged.

Everything you've said is hyperbolic speculation, and self-referential self-approval. There's zero substance to it. Worse, everyone can see through your attempts.

As to Liberals who disagree, don't be shy - name them.

You persist in claiming that you've "studied" the issues. Yet you never provide coherent presentation of these issues. Instead you pose on line, with jaded grandiosity. Face it most post-pubescents drop that act early. Yet you cling fast to it like it's some Vogue-enraptured security blanket -why? It hasn't worked!

In the ample time you've had to outline your political and economic beliefs and make your case - you haven't. What holds you back?

It's embarrassing. With every new entry you make you really have nothing to say but how impressed with yourself you are.

That only leads to people feeling that your life lacks something. Lots of something.

Or out on my property fly fishing. Ahhhh life is good!!! Just want to keep what I've worked hard for and "not spread the wealth" to the lazies who dont like to work, I already pay enough in taxes to support those liberal socialist programs like welfare. • You're pathetic Avery ... nothing better to do... I have a wonderful life and dont seem to be on this thing a fraction the time you are ... My libertarian tendencies are w/ a little or lower case L... Am not a bitter GOP.. think the party is still grand ... just has a few ultra religious in there way to the right but that ok... would prefer them over the socialist ultra liberals you seem to worship. Shoot, we are not bitter in the least... just tired of hearing you "twist and spout" wrongly what everyone says ... you know what they say about assuming and you are a master... Youre a very laughable. And when a conversation is about me and lying about me when you have no clue who I am ... makes you even more pathetic in saying I interrupted in your conversation ... It was more of your lying BS... gosh you are one major bitter piece of work!!! So insecure obviously that you have cut down everyone. If you want to have a "private" conversation w/ anyone do it by sending them an email on this site .. You dont do it in public on a site that asks for responses. You are one of dumbest of the dumbest liberals and you think youre cool because you have mastered the art of twisting what everyone says into something else... I makes me wonder if in real life you are a pathological liar because it is obvious you believe the garbage you spew out... HAHAHAHAHAHA! Say what you want...either way in this election you will still end up the loser... after you have to live w/ your pathetic little self. Talk about needing to get a life .... you're on this thing constantly even when we are all out living our lives. You remind me of the SouthPark kids when they were playing WoW!!! So laughable... so here it is HEHEHAHAHEHE HAHAHAHAAA! I guess I should be honored you only target those on here who scare you by our intelligence... NobamaJon and NobamaGirl for one.... GET A LIFE. G'bye!

    • XintJoyce, without being invited, weighs in with another imperial sermon of powerhouse rhetorical flatulence and gets confused about the finer points of discourse. .

      “Dont waste my time.“

Golly X-type. We aren't. No one is forcing you to sit at a keyboard all day long fulminating. The time you waste is your own. You merely and rudely interrupt a semi-private conversation without any one here caring greatly what you have to say.. Why you haven't noticed, presumably you crave negative attention, is your problem not ours.

“You guys bore me... so why waste my time on the very laughable and blind BS you dish out. Pathetic.”

What is pathetic Joyce is that you say over and over again how frightfully bored you are. Why are you indoors? Why aren't you more socially active, doing things that you'd find less boring? Does the sun never shine where you live? Nowhere to go? Nothing to do? That is pathetic indeed.

Despite the fact that no one does, you insist that you shouldn't ever be asked to pay attention to others, but what do you do? You write 'how-I-am-suffering notes' to yawn and whine about how you suffer from having nothing better to do! This does not suggest intelligent use of time.

“Say what you want about me ... it just rolls off ... Dont know why you Liberals always childishly attack a persons opinion ... guess you dont believe in free speech.”

Does free speech include comments like “ things that crawl out from rocks”? Is that not an attack on a person's opinion?

“I usually state facts that can be substantiated..”

I have yet to see one on this page.

“..dont assume I'm a republican... at one time thought Obama was great “

Nobody assumes you're a Repub, and no one imagines your acidic mentality is consistent with a Dem. Your frequent references to Libertarianism's ideas suggest that at best you're a disgruntled Ron Paul supporter stuck with McCain and the havoc he would cause all Libertarians.

“In two days it will be over (not a week! LOL again~) “

X-type? Those facts you always present? Check the calendar. It's Saturday here on earth. Tuesday is not two days away.

And finally: now you hate women too! “Your like a bunch of gossipy old women! hehehehehe! Hilarious....Leaves no credence in what your opinion is..

So old women aren't entitled to opinions either! Why is it that dolts have trouble spelling words like “don't” and “you're” and always childishly attack a person's opinion? Guess they don't believe in free speech. Their lives are that bleak.

BTW, please don't burden yourself and feel obliged to respond. We will understand.

    • No Avery it is about, loading up your guns and boys and heading to the woods to shoot cans, just to be FREE, without passing through road blocks, or being told how much fuel you can use. It is about moving across the country to START again without waiting 7 years for approval, It is about our nation standing up for the worlds citizens who might need our help.It is about keeping the money we earn for our families, not trying to support other people who don't try as hard to make it. It is about FREEDOM of speech, so that people like you can blab all night without getting tried for treason. Its about a President that can answer a question without lying. It is about good ol AMERICAN FREEDOM!!!!

    • You all can continue to live in Obama fantasyland...which mainly consists of things that crawl out from rocks. Dont care and dont waste my time on your petty BS and double talk. You'll be the biggest whiners IF O wins and does to you what we know he will. Grow up w/ childish name calling and rhetoric. I proudly voted for McCain/Palin over a week ago. You guys bore me... so why waste my time on the very laughable and blind BS you dish out. Pathetic...Stay w/ your old cronies and have a whine (w/ cheese) and hope you dont get you blinders taken off the hard way ... LOL!! Your writings are hysterical and hilarious. Say what you want about me ... it just rolls off ... Dont know why you Liberals always childishly attack a persons opinion ... guess you dont believe in free speech. I usually state facts that can be substantiated... G'bye. Say what you want about me but I can sleep well at night with my decision and who I voted for ... Love and Peace to you all. (O, by the way, dont assume I'm a republican... at one time thought Obama was great until I researched both sides and found the truth ... Hope you do too in time. Feel sorry for you if not.) G'bye again ... In two days it will be over (not a week! LOL again~) Comedy Central! Your like a bunch of gossipy old women! hehehehehe! Hilarious....Leaves no credence in what your opinion is ...Later Dudes! and good luck w/ your small lives.

    • AMEN TO THAT. The bigger job is for the moderates in the GOP to tell the ultra right extreemist where to go. They are not wanted. We do not need nor want your self righteous bigotry and agenda. That includes scrapping 8 ot the 10 bill of rights. Bottom line there are at least 5 people who are or were in the GWB administration who need to be impeached. On the top of the list is Dick Chaney, Karl Rove and Paul Wolfowics.

9/11 changed the BUSH agenda. It was horrific. How soon people forget. BUSH had lofty plans. But WAR changed all that. Starting the second administration he should have powered down and taken care of the domestic policies. But, the American people don't know the day to day security briefs. BUSH tried to keep us safe. Some of you might be alive still thanks to GWB. Social issues don't matter if your DEAD.

They also forget NobamaJon that democratic congress, carter, clinton all liberal democrats are the ones who weakened our military. The military know it. My exhusband was in the military and we were married at the times we saw this happen. The liberals were always yelling no draft and with any hint of it would cry. The good ol' GOP is what brought us a volunteer army and are the ones who voted in stronger military ... not shutting down bases like the democrat administrations did and the democratic congress... by the way is what we have had these last years .... You all sure dont read your history books or listen in class or read about what you are voting for. Am sorry for you when your delusions of grandeur are squelched if O makes it to the white house. Would love to see a few here eat their words...LOL! We will get by fine w/ our intelligence but your disappointment may bowl you over! Dont expect our military to build up, keeping us strong. (You do know that we need military power to keep peace in our country? Otherwise the unsavory power hungry leaders like we see in the middle east, china, africa, cuba, etc will take over our country to w/ a lot of bloodshed like in those countries. Do you really think O can do that... NO WAY... No military background or knowledge. Dont bother me and talk about me w/ your stupidity and just plain dumb rhetoric (aka BS)...(actually, come to think of it ... you dont bother me... you mean nothing to me ... just maybe someone who actually uses their brain to figure out things will read this.) O and btw, i doubt you mean anything to the Big Exaulted O either except he needs your vote presently but otherwise, when the election is over, you too will be forgotten for more lofty ambitions whether he wins or not. Look at his track record...

You are wrong about "the moderates". Their place is with the fascist party of the times ~ the Democrats.

Thankfully there are only a couple of them left so the job on moving them right out shouldn't be all that hard.

    • Its not really an issue of boredom for her and the rest of the republican ilk. Its more along the lines of depression and anger about their coming demise. Each day til Tuesday brings them one more day closer. Their candidate was boring , ineffectual and pretty much not up to the task. The Grand Old Party does not look so GRAND anymore, as a matter of fact it is looking very shabby.
They are being slapped in the face with the reality that their control on this country's direction is slipping through their fingers and yet there is nothing that they can do about it. It is not just in the presidential election but at the state levels also. The country has had just about enough of them.
The policies of the Republican Party have just about ruined this country, hell look what its done to this country's image world wide.
The saving grace is that come Tuesday a better man and a voice of reason will be coming to the white house and pull us from this mess the GOP and its camp followers have got us into. Won't be easy but if we pull together as a country it can be done. But first The Republican party as a whole need to check it's bigotry A party for privileged whites and privileged white wannabes

    • To bad Xintjoyce is bored. It is the begining of the end of trickle down economics, which did not trickle too far. It is the begining of the end of the stranglehold by the Ultra Right Fundamentelist Protestant Extreemist of the Republican Party. Which called themselves by a multitude of names. I call them a different name, which will be bleeped. Just wait a week. The election will be over. After January 21, 2008 there will be a new day and regulation will have a vicious come back with the teeth of a meat eating dinasour. The financial sector will be loose their self regulation, which is the primary cause of this depression cycle. Alternative renewal energy will have a fast track for implementation. That includes windmills on thousands of acres of land, solar panels on every house, every coal fired plant will have additional energy from rivers and streams, energy production from geo thermal. That does not include transportation. Like in Europe and other emerging countries super high speed passanger rail will make short haul air travel obsolete. By the way, the Petroleum institute forgot to say something in their drilling commercials. Our refineries are already working at 98 % capacity. It takes up to 10 years to build a refinery complex, There are no factories in the United States that build high pressure tanks. It would take another 5 years to build those. Now XintJoyce, what part of that is boring? The new day is coming, get on the exitment band wagon and stop getting bored.

You've noticed the drop off too?

For most of them Obama's rise in popularity and the depth of trust people respose in him has been a hard lesson in humility for the usual wingnuts. It scares them.

Nothing they've tried works. The "you have to make me believe in Obama" gambit is so obvious that people just laugh.

Having no wide perspective or self-awareness, naturally, they don't get it. The usual tactics, intimidation, threats, defamation get nowhere on line.

Yet like dumb goons in a school yard they still imagine they ought to have remote control over what people around them do, think, and can be allowed to say.

There's a lot for such people to lose. It's about loss of Control and the vanity of assuming dictatorial rule over others. Sure, you get that with juveniles but seeing it in adult posts?
Ironically, they tend to undermine their own prospects. Viewers on Current look for insight, humor, intelligent content and comment. When they read the crap these people still spew, they just associate McCain\Palin with the kinds of bigots, racists, blowhards and airheads all of us laugh at

The net losers are McCain\ Palin. Worse, the McCain Palin team keeps egging them on to worse.

The drop off isn't really hard to understand. People do adjust, but it takes maturity.

      LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i for one would like to see the prez govern from just the left of center. i would reserve the center for the part of their ass where i would put my foot if congress and senate doesn't work on the issues affecting us all.
