Sachsgate indeed.
Meanwhile the entire nation is fully aware that we were lied to in order to justify a phony war, there were no weapons of mass destruction and many men and women have died as a result of this most pathetic and damaging lie. Where was the accountability for that stunt? Where were the public lynchings? Where was the media circus?
It's unfortunate that cases like this manage to add life to a dying tradition - debate. People at dinner tables everywhere have suddenly got an opinion on it, "I think it's the controllers fault", "Jonathon Ross should know better"... The point is, IT DOESN'T MATTER. This "news" works because it invites people to feel empowered enough to form an opinion on something they can understand. It is a diversion from the real issues which actually effect us all. Form an opinion on something important, lynch the people responsible for actual crimes, and create a media circus on the things that need more attention - not on things that we really needn't care about at all.

Poor old beeb - they're getting it in the neck now over some jokes about the Queen, which some people have deemed offensive.
The jokes were featured on the satire "Mock the Week."

"if you could only secure 1% of the publicity Brand and Ross are getting now you'd be phoning the Queen and telling her you and Harry had just spent a week on the nose bag and she needs to settle the bill."
HA!
Also, I just want to add to this debate further. I know that goes against my initial standings on the issue but I feel that this thread is turning into a critique of the media's rabid behaviour.
Read and fury at Richard Littlejohn's pathetic attempt to turn this nothing story into a political issue. Apparently, "The BBC is run like Britain is governed." But wait, there's more, "If the Tories could but see it, there's a once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity here". What Mr Littlejohn? Are you for real?
I have a suggestion for the Daily Mail; read your articles out loud before you publish them and if preferable get an ageing, fat and grumpy old man to do the reading for added effect. Read this next passage out loud and you'll get a feeling for what I mean.
"I'd give the BBC enough money to run Radio 4 and maybe two television channels."
Glad to know that Littlejohn isn't in charge then,
Any given opportunity to tarnish the excellent reputation of the BBC and the wolves come out of the shadows to make themselves heard.

Ok, so now Steve Penk has something to say about this; the man who's infamy stems from his own hey day of breakfast prank calls. Penk, be quiet. I've just seen you spouting a heatfelt tirade against our nation's funny men because the controller of BBC2, a gracious and hard working lady has lost her job. Maybe she was pushed (they won't admit this) or maybe she felt she had to go...who knows.
This happens in politics all the time, if face is lost someone, perhaps not even those to blame, have to go - career hari kari. What is boils down to is that people's sensibilities have been dented and now personnel seemingly detatchedm from the incident are going - if this was consitent throughout the public and political spere no one would ever have a job and Bush would be in gaol.
To conclude, Steve Penk keep your trap shut, you are just trying to help your ailing career, if you could only secure 1% of the publicity Brand and Ross are getting now you'd be phoning the Queen and telling her you and Harry had just spent a week on the nose bag and she needs to settle the bill. - 3 years ago

Great article that sums up the feel of this whole ordeal. It makes me sad that people are passionate enough to complain about these rather mundane things - yet not make any noise about the financial bail out or the iraq war for example.
I think this was heavily driven by those who want to privatise or get rid of the BBC. Anything to tarnish it's name and reputation.

ProfessorFunk I couldn't agree more. Totally on the money!
If anyone is unfortunate enough to have Sky News then go and check out their coverage this "story". They're doing everything they can to get the BBC punished, to sway public opinion away from them and to otherwise tarnish their reputation.
The BBC shouldn't put up with this media circus, it's time to go on the attack.

ROSS AND BRAND ARE HEROES, SAY SPANISH
THE Madrid government last night sprang to the defence of Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross hailing them as the new heroes of anti-Spanish racism.
Prime minister José Luis Zapatero said the assault on Andrew Sachs was 'measured' given the actor's portrayal of a halfwit Spaniard who thinks a rat is some kind of Siberian hamster.

I agree...complete non-story. Is Sachs a legend, for appearing in 12 episodes of a show? No. He's an old man, and it was poor taste, but it didn't all this. So Brand will go to a cable channel, Ross will apologise profusely and get his regular slot back...6 months later, nobody remembers a thing. Now THAT'S news.

Public service broadcasting - pandering to the public at large and trying not to offend anyone, there were 20thousand complaints but 2million people listened to the show, countless more watched on youtube, and me being one of them found it hilarious.
2million+ vs 20thousand
we winBush apparently won by 500 votes, this is a no contest.
Why don't we have the public dictate the PSB remit, we are the public therefore we should instigate debate and decide what best serves us. I'm going to start a vote right now, who thinks this has been blown out of proportion and agrees that it was, in fact, funny.?
