A boy of 15 punched and kicked a father-of-three to death - then filmed himself on his mobile phone boasting: 'Eyes of a killer'.

Andrew Smith and his 18-year-old friend Jason Bolton attacked Asaf Mahmood Ahmed without provocation as he walked to a shop, repeatedly stamping and jumping on his head. He died from an asthma attack triggered by the beating.

Smith, who is now 16, then went home and used his mobile phone to make a seven-second video of his face as he boasted: 'Eyes of a killer'.

The images were shown to a jury at Manchester Crown Court, where Smith and Bolton have now been convicted of Mr Ahmed's murder.

Seconds before the beating of Mr Ahmed, the pair had attacked another man in a nearby street, in Bolton, Greater Manchester.

Smith was later arrested at his home and police found the mobile phone, which revealed that an hour after the attack he had filmed his chilling boast.

After the verdict, Mr Ahmed's family said in a statement: 'Asaf was a quiet, private man who wouldn't harm anyone. He was a good son, brother, husband and father to his three children.'

Smith and Bolton had been drinking before they went looking for trouble, just before Christmas last year.

They picked on one man, but he was too strong and escaped unhurt. Moments later they spotted 28-year-old Mr Ahmed - 5ft 5inches tall and seven stone and attacked him on steps behind the Derby Ward Labour Club.

A teenage girl who lived nearby saw the killers kicking and stamping on his head.

'It went on for two or three minutes and then the taller one jumped with both feet on the victim's head seven or eight times,' said prosecutor Brian Cummings QC.

They ran off and Mr Ahmed tried to use his asthma inhaler but had a severe attack and died.

Mr Cummings told the jury at the start of the trial that the question of a racial motive would 'inevitably arise' during the case.

But he said it was the Crown's belief that the probable motive was to inflict random violence.

Smith and Bolton will be sentenced at a later date after reports have been prepared by the probation service.

    • well, maybe i'm wrong, but with the busted neo-nazi mass killing attempt being foiled, and just all the comments i've even heard personally, i don't think a racial connection is so far fetched... it seems like the closer we get to the election, the more I see the truly hateful side of people. i'm not saying this is related, but the closer we get to the election, the more racist comments i hear (and NOT just on the White side of the fence, so that i'm clear) but i also think if so many people still feel so hateful, it's better that it's in the open, than for us to be unaware of it. it just confuses me when someone tells me "racism doesn't exist anymore". And not that i'm discounting J_Jammer's opinion on it being racially unrelated. (mainly because i'm curious to know the nationality of the first man they tried to attack) but at the same time, at least in my own experiences with hate...there's never really a message behind it. except for the occasional "i hate you (insert derogatory term here)s."

    • People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. (George Orwell)

The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment.

Why didn't the witness intervene? If that happened here in Texas those boys would be fertilizer by now.

    • Given his apparent lack of remorse, this kid is likely a sociopath. Given that sociopaths are difficult if not impossible to reform I suspect this kid will spend the remainder of his years in prisons and psyche wards.

I'm not sure how a 'lack of remorse' immediately qualifies these kids as "sociopaths". What about soldiers who kill with out remorse? Are they 'sociopaths' too? Or is it the mere fact that a soldier is trained to kill and these kids were not that makes that distinguishment?

This "lack of remorse" came from somewhere, and I'm sure it was an acquired sentiment rather than a natural mental "defect", if you will.

    • A couple of weeks ago there was a story where a homeless man was set on fire and burned to death. What part of our culture is producing these awful, random acts of violence and death? People just don't go around killing people at random with out some sort of reinforcement allowing them to rationalize that it is OK to commit such acts.

What is the source of this dehumanization?

    • This is so horrific, how are there people out there like him?! This horrible attack shows both disregard for human life, as well as a complete disregard for the law, if he apparently didn't care about the inevitable consequences of making that video.

If you're not to busy skidding around on the slippery surface of irrelevant genius perhaps you could expand on the connection between random violence and "post 911 propaganda."

    • Our current justice and penal system doesn't appear to be much of a deterrent anymore. Perhaps stronger measures need to be applied to violent criminals.

      ---------------------

Totally agree. Because if it was racially motivated he would have said so in his message.

Again this proves no one needs a gun to kill someone. Punishment for crimes of this nature should be placed on the person based on how they killed someone. If the death was long and laborious the punishment should be more severe than if someone just shot someone else in the head. Pain and suffering of the victim should be taken into account as well as motive. The pain and suffering of the family of the victim is also important but not nearly as important, because their pain will be there no matter the way in which their family membered died. The fact that they are dead is painful.

I don't think jail time is a great idea with people like this. They'll just get worse.

I think if they make them do something that's embarrassing for them more so then it will fix them and make them think about what it was they did. This means the person in question should be researched by those that knew him to find out about his dislikes and likes and use that to help him get better, if that is at all possible.

And this story is heartbreaking. They can't even have an open casket...or they could just to show the damage those boys did.

That should be part of the punishment. They should have to go the the funeral and listen to the stories of those that loved the man they decided deserved to die in such a way. They will not be able to speak at the funeral or even talk to each other. If there is laughter or noise from them they should be incapacitated in such a way that will force them to still listen while keeping them silent so that the event could continue.

    • something very disturbed about that kid if you ask me... he needs help rather than be just locked away for half his life. Sounds like he just did it mostly for kicks too...

    • My own moral philosophy: I say an eye for an eye. Does that make me a bad person? Does that put me on their level? My mindset is if someone did this to one of my family members, (you bet) heads would roll. The police would end up putting me behind bars.
