Self-censorship hits videogames over religion

Violence may still be rife in the world of videogames, but when it comes to religion, caution remains the watchword in the big bucks business.Sony's decision this month to delay one of the most anticipated games in the history of PlayStation, LittleBigPlanet, to avoid offending Muslims, is the latest sign that videogame-makers are playing prudence when it comes to religion.
LittleBigPlanet, which has received rave reviews, is finally being released next week after a fortnight-long delay because of concerns that a track in the background music might be found offensive.
As copies began to be shipped off to distributors, game developpers woke up to the potential for trouble following a post on a Sony public Internet forum stating that a song by Mali artist Toumani Diabate included two expressions from the Koran that could cause offence
The forum user, who identified himself as "yasser", said "Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Quran deeply offending (sic)."
Responding on the game's website, Sony said: "We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence this may have caused."
A Sony spokeswoman in Paris told AFP the song had been replaced by an instrumental track by Diabate. "The game has not been changed," said Emmanuelle Renon. "We did not want polemics."
But the incident was not the first.

I find Muslims offensive when there blowing up innocent people. Half of them don't give a shit for life so why should we care about them. The funny thing is that the bloke who wrote the song is a muslim......Come on sony get a chuffin grip.

Religion itself is not the culprit here, but more so the people who are willing to rampage and even kill if their religion is in anyway offended.
Why do people make fun of Christianity so much? Because they don't have to worry about their head being blown off in retaliation.

A clear distinction needs to be made between someone being offended and someone being offensive. The former is acceptable, the latter is not.

i think sony took the song out because it would offend non-muslims more if they kept it and guised their move by making it look like they are being sensitive for that community when, in fact, they don't want anything to do with Islam. i might be wrong.

Well, why do you think that? It doesn't make a lot of sense. Most non-muslims wouldn't even recognize the song as having a reference to the Qu'ran...would they?

it usually only takes one person to know (and post something on a forum) to rouse fears of association and get the whole "let's boycott sony for being terrorists" movement going, no? especially if the line goes something like...
"La Illaha illa Allah, Muhammad-ur-Rasul-Allah"
you don't have to know any verses in the Qur'an to know that the line above may be from it.
i'm not claiming much about sony but i'm weary to take anything for face value anymore, especially with any news regarding Islam posted here. you post a bunch, you should know. let's just think a bit further for a minute.
what doesn't make sense is for them to delay the release of the game, which cost them money by the day, to pull an obscure song out that may or may not be offensive to Muslims, according to a lone post on a forum. it makes better sense that sony doesn't want to tread anywhere close to controversy and be subject to scrutiny by their larger consumer base, which i assume is the "i fear muslims" world.
again, i could be completely wrong, but so could everyone else.

Religion should never have the power to censor. We must overcome the fear and ignorance that organized religion represents. We must speak truth to power.

I really don't see how some verses from the Koran would offend Muslims, the guy on their forum was probably a troll.
That being said, they're not really a group of people that you want to piss off.
But self-censorship? Pffft, give me a break. Video games, by any account, have NO issue with giving the boot to ANY religion. This was a kid's game, and they're trying to not make any political message.
Can't wait to play the game, been excited for it ever since I saw the trailer for it at E3.
Did anyone else notice how suddenly, out of the blue, gaming has made a huge comeback in October and has a smash hit line-up for November? After how dead the summer was, I thought the market was slowing down.

HELL no. Don't expect the video game industry to go anywhere; if anything, they are branching out, particularly the systems themselves. XBox, Wii and PS3s are already multifaceted machines with more uses than just playing games, and video games themselves are gaining credit as an art form.

lol I know, gaming can't die. But the summer -was- pretty dry.
Right now, I have so many awesome games to play that I don't have time to even get started with them.
LittleBigWorld, Dead Space, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3 and soon to be Starcraft 2, Mirror's Edge and Deus Ex 3. It's an exciting time for sure.

the medium of video games will follow the lead of other mediums such as television. the more people who abide by the social constraints of specific groups, the more outrageous one company will be. theres always a market for the taboo.

Then why haven't films followed that trend?
When you can make selective titles and when your medium has no control over your content like radio and television do, you can do whatever the fuck you want.
Gaming will be just fine.

I just don't understand where this line of mentality stops. There are tons of games with mythological or religious themes. I hate to say it, but Chodering might be right when saying "if it was any other religion it would still have got released."
The article I linked talks about the hypocricy of Sony's move, including ignored complaints about other games from the Church of London, as well as some interesting quotes from Toumani Diabate, the artist of the LBP song in question.
Excerpt:
"It's quite normal to play music and be inspired by the words of the Prophet Muhammad," he told the BBC. "It's my way to attract and inspire people towards Islam." - 1 year ago

I doubt anyone, Muslim or not, would have noticed or taken offense from the song, and if they did it would most likely be the kind of person that thinks Supermario is a homosexual recruitment tool sent by the devil to brainwash your children

I suggest you try Xenogears/Xenosaga and Shin Megami Tensi for games questioning religious endevors.
Even Halo has a plot involving blind faith and its dangers..
Another point, Violence is a play mechanic, religion is a theme or story device...

Video game makers will push the envelope with controversial violence despite criticizism because violence sells.
They won't do the same with religion because nobody buys a game based on the religious content. Any content that gets complaints will be cut if it's not essential to the appeal of the game, they are a business after all.

Yea, really pissed me off when I had waited so long only to have to wait a little longer.
If you've played the game, you'd see no problem with it. The game is interesting in that it the main story takes you around the Earth and brings you to all these different places and cultures. So far I've been to England, Africa, South America, and Mexico. I haven't found a shred of racism but instead culture and glorifying of cultures that often go, well, unglorified. Especially when you get clothing and items from that part of the world and you enjoy it, where otherwise you'd think it was stupid. The game does a lot to light up cultures and make them fun and interesting to everyone. So it saddens me that they felt the need to remove one of these pieces of their culture love because someone might be offended.
