The epic battle to become the 44th president of the United States has entered its final hours with polls showing Senator Barack Obama holding a solid lead.

The final day of campaigning saw Senator John McCain set off on a gruelling odyssey of swing states hoping to inspire a last minute upset.

On the last day of his 21-month campaign for the White House, Mr Obama said the longest, most expensive presidential contest in history would be won by the campaign with the more motivated voters.

Including the primary elections, candidates have raised $1.5 billion, with Mr Obama accounting for $640 million of that alone.

"The question is going to be who wants it more," he said on a syndicated radio talk show, the Russ Parr Morning Show. "And I hope that our supporters want it bad, because I think the country needs it."

Mr McCain, bidding for his own place in history as the oldest ever first term president at 72, was meanwhile racing through seven swing states, holding rallies at or near airports to save travel time.

He started the day in Tampa, Florida in the car park of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football stadium, telling voter that he was the "tried and tested" leader the US needed period of wars and economic crisis.

"With this kind of enthusiasm, this kind of intensity we will win Florida and we will win the election," Mr McCain told a crowd of just 400.

Looking, again, to distance himself from George W Bush, perhaps the most unpopular president ever seen, the Arizona senator stressed that he, too, opposes the Republican president's economic policies. But he insisted that Mr Obama's tax plans would leave families worse off.

Mr McCain praised Joe the Plumber for getting an honest answer out of the Democratic candidate, when he said during a campaign stop in Ohio that wanted to "spread the wealth around".
