If there's one thing that both parties, both candidates and the country can agree on it's that the economy is the most important topic of this election. With record high foreclosure rates, bank failures, plunging stock markets and massive losses of jobs the next president will be faced with the difficult task of bringing America back from the brink of a depression.

In this Collective Journalism Special, "The Broke Generation" we look at the many causes and effects of the economic crisis. We hear from a former Bear Stearns employee, a visual artist handing out Zero Dollars, students in debt, uninsured freelancers, people bogged down with long commutes and high gas prices, and do an in depth look at the many facets of the foreclosure crisis. CJ contributors from all over the country weigh in on the most crucial topic of this election.

Collective Journalism, Current's citizen journalism program, works by combining perspectives from contributors like you around the world. All month until Election Day, CJ will be airing special investigations into the most important issues of this election.

I worked 40 hours a week through college and left college with about 30,000 in debt... the worst thing about it is when you graduate, finding a job is more hectic then being in college...

If its all like that ,we should start teaching more in high school and more college courses in high school and longer hours and on more finance issues. and the new class is called PRESENT...;-) i think that would be a wonderful idea!

It's interesting that an African-American is elected to the highest office in the land only to inherit a broken economy, poor international image, a deeper divided homeland and a current administration still trying to get corporate favors pushed through Congress before the end of their watch.

Thoughful change is needed ASAP. I pray that all goes well because if there is any insurmountable difficulty; if there is any promise left unfullfilled the blame will be placed squarely at the door of President Obama and he will be scapegoated for the entire mess.

Good luck Mr. President and God Bless!

Thank you Federal Reserve act. and policies that allow outsourcing/offshoring to be easier than employing and manufacturing at home

Americans ask for this. This is what they deserve. And it isnt going to get any better. The californians have re-elected Nancy Pelosi. Congress has time and again given Bush a blank check to finance his wars. The money all coming from the space filed with air. Congress voted for the war. Congress did nothing to rein in the Bush administration. With more contractors than troops in Iraq all being paid by the money's from air. There have been warnings from many people including Ron Paul but no one listens. And putting Nancy back in power as Speaker of the house, there will be a continuation of the Bush administration policies and more bad times. Bush destroyed this nation and he still comes out smelling like roses. What a legacy.; People you have already paid this country in full. Now you and many generations to come will live in poverty because of the congressional idleness.

everyone blames the president for spending but Congress proposes the budget. He can veto all or nothing so they try to hammer out what they can before it gets to him.

As for the budget and war comments, everyone forgets about terrorism except when there was a recent event and keeping Bin Laden tied up in Iraq and Afghanastan has kept him off American soil except for the 2 dozen or so semi successful attempts reported by the Heritage Foundation report which is on Cspan but no major newspaper was carrying.

It seems 600 million in campaign ad money can buy off a lot of press.

The dualistic society in America that is being produced from the disparity of wealth is sad. There needs to be a real redistribution of wealth because the tiny "top" percent take all of the resources and leave the rest of America (and the world) to cry after the scraps. We have people rolling by homeless camps in their Bentleys. While I feel that if you work hard you should be able to live well, I think that is no longer possible in America. Many "rich" people have the misconception that "poor" people don't work or try hard, when it is in fact the opposite.
