Perhaps best known for being the author of Jurassic Park and its sequel The Lost World, which were turned into a hugely successful movie franchise, his numerous books have sold over 150 million copies worldwide.
In what his family calls an unexpected death, it was revealed that he was waging a private battle against cancer.
"While the world knew him as a great storyteller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us -- and entertained us all while doing so -- his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes," his family tells ET. "He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget."

Wow, how tragic. He wrote some decent stuff.
It's funny, I was thinking about him the other day after I saw The 13th Warrior again.
-
I am one of the biggest ER fans ever! Well okay, the last few seasons have pretty much sucked, but that wasn't Crichton's fault!
He will be missed...

Michael Crichton was a creative force that few people recognize. He was behind a ton of your favorite movies, television shows and of course, books. His mixture of science, politics, medicine and crime made a unique perspective that provided a lot of great entertainment.
His books and films weren't always hits but they always brought forth interesting concepts in science and how they could change our world...and not for the better. I, for one, will miss his interesting perspective.

This is quite a loss. He was an imaginative genius and a enjoyable story-teller. Many TV shows and books will be long affected by his legacy.

Beat me to the punch :)
Very sad to hear this news, but had no idea he was battling cancer.

That's so sad. Michael Crichton is my favorite author. I'm currently reading one of his books. I'm also a fan of his TV show ER, which is in its last season. It's sad Michael Crichton won't see the last episode.

2008 has seen a veritable sky full of stars be extinguished, and he was unfortunately the latest to go. He will be missed.

Crichton's books accompanied me to many places in my teenage years. Rest in peace.

One of my favorite writers.
I always wanted to meet him.
What a loss. I wonder what stories he had to share that had yet made it to the page.
May his family find comfort in this tragic time.

We've lost a great mind and a great voice. Michael Crichton set a bar with intelligent, engaging thrillers set in situations that were globally relevant in many cases. They dealt with topics many others were afraid to touch on and he told his stories with a very in-depth level of reality that isn't often seen.
He will be missed.
