64.1% vote - Record high???

WASHINGTON (AP) — America voted in record numbers, standing in lines that snaked around blocks and in some places in pouring rain. Voters who queued up Tuesday and the millions who balloted early propelled 2008 to what one expert said was the highest turnout in a century.

It looks like 136.6 million Americans will have voted for president this election, based on 88 percent of the country's precincts tallied and projections for absentee ballots, said Michael McDonald of George Mason University. Using his methods, that would give 2008 a 64.1 percent turnout rate.

    • Does anybody know how large a percentage of people residing here in America are illegal immigrants, legal aliens, and people who are either convicted felons out of jail or are currently residing their now? Those numbers would help explain the low percentage, unless those number were taken only from people registered and eligible to vote.

No one knows. There are estimates.

Now, about Republicans doing what? Distributing literature? That's what campaigns do.

Can you tell me exactly what the literature was that bothered you? Did you get a copy? Do you still have it?

And if it's that old "Republicans vote Tuesay and Democrats Wednesday" stuff, that's been around since Cleisthenes invented Democracy.

Quite frankly, those who don't care enough to find out when election day is probably shouldn't be voting.

    • The Democrats regularly engage in some serious vote suppression measures. They did it again this year quite successfully.

Remember the long lines for earlyvoting? They knew there were just a few voting stations available for that yet they called their true believers out to stand inline for many hours just to intimidate Republicans.

      Guess the trick worked.

It's still a trick and not the sort of thing real believers in Democracy would do, but then we can't expect better of the Democrats ~ definitely not people you can trust.

Now now, to be fair, Republicans are just as guilty. They were the ones distributing misinformation to young, new voters so they could prevent their votes from counting.

    • I think the other 36% of people either have no interest in politics because they don't understand how it effects their lives or they are just disgusted with the political system and especially the campaign process.

Who knows, maybe people just couldn't tell the difference between the two candidates because they didn't address any type of real issues during the campaigns.

    • Of course there was better turnout this time... For once in a long while we weren't presented with the choice of a turd on a bun and a fart in a bag.

When there's a truly appealing candidate, and real issues at stake - guess what? WE SHOW UP TO THE POLLS.

    • I would guess that most Americans do not know what it is like to live under totalitarian rule. If they did, than voter turnout would be more like 100 percent.

    • The voter booths were apparently stifled with people as it is.

I just have a feeling republican voter fraud had destroyed a giant percentage of the gain that Obama had.

There is no such thing as "Republican Vote Fraud"

Virtually 100% of the vote fraud in America is undertaken by Democrats.

Knowledgeable people reject the Democrats as cowards and thieves.

    • I would say its more like 100 people in a burning room, 63 look around for a way out, and one actually moves and walks towards an exit.

    • You did.

In 1908 it was 65%...you didn't even beat it.

I can't believe western nations have such a piss poor voter turnout.

We should be ashamed of ourselves.
