A security expert has warned Barack Obama may never be able to get close to his fans again - for fear of assassination.

Former royal protection officer Steve Park said Mr Obama and his family would face ever-increasing security levels now he is the President-elect.

Mr Obama was surrounded by a thick sheet of bullet-proof glass when he addressed a crowd of thousands at his victory rally in Grant Park, Chicago, after winning the US election.

And almost all of Chicago's police department were on duty at the massive park on the shores of Lake Michigan, funnelling spectators through a single security checkpoint.

But Mr Park, who now runs a security company called Sema, said he thought there would have been "at least several hundred" secret service personnel waiting in the wings - with "thousands" more on standby in case of a riot.

...There will be a full-scale security delegation attached to him from now on. He's going to find it fairly difficult to be able to touch the public as he wants to, and the motorcade will grow and grow...

    • Do you see those Bulldogs around him. They look at grandmothers like they are the devil. Thats a good thing. He needs to step back and do what they tell him. Skin heads do exist. And nothing they would like better than to be the one taking him out. As a school girl, I remember the announcement about John Kennedy in the motorcade, the blood all over his wife. It was beyond horrible. We must protect him at all costs for his family first, and secondly for us.

I dont think anyone will touch him on Inauguration. The security will be unbelievable. Public places are the most dangerous. I think that is why coward Cheney has hidden in his "undisclosed location". When was the last time anyone saw that man??? only when he went in for his heart attacks.

    • I think it's part of the job. It's just the flipside of being one of the world leaders. In 8 years he'll be able to sit back and relax again.

    • If somebody really wanted to screw things up they would kill him on the inauguration, during the small time frame when there is no president.
