In California, protesters have begun demonstrating against a gay marriage ban that voters approved by a narrow margin on Tuesday. Supporters of same sex marriages have filed three lawsuits asking the Supreme Court to overturn the proposition, arguing that the measure is an illegal constitutional revision. Proposition 8 supporters say the measure is legal and classify the proposition as a limited amendment.

On May 15th the California Supreme Court ruled that a state ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional by a vote of 4 to 3. That ruling also elevated sexual orientation to the constitutional status of race and gender, an elevation that provides strong legal protection from discrimination.

With what WE as a Nation have accomplished this year alone [see: Barack] - WE have the ability to take back, or take on, any power that WE want.

"If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream." - MLK,Jr.

I'm glad that this is causing the chaos it should. What we have to remember is that being a minority does not mean we are not equal, that being different does not mean the "norm" is right, and that being hated doesn't mean we cannot continue to love.

"Get up, stand up. Stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up. Don't give up the fight."

The stench and corruption that is the religious right clings to a life sustained by hatred fear and ignorance. Our nation is still infected by this virus of superstition. We must overcome the intellectual and existential weakness that is Xtianity. We must free the state from religious rot.

When did Schwarzenegger make that response? I haven't been able to find any other reference to it online and there's no context given in this piece.

Well we've finally elected a black president...and it was only possible because of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Now why can't everyone realize that many gay and lesbian Americans are fighting for the same thing now that black Americans fought for back then? Equality opportunity.

To whine and sue because you did not get what you had wanted is pitiful. Anyone with self respect knows that the best way to retrieve a lost petition is to respectably pursue the cause within the boundaries of the sanctioned government.
What was voted, was right. No group of people should alter the course of our history (more likely destroying it). After all, we're beginning to look quite much like Rome with our lust for blood, sluggishness, and immoral ways.

Unbelievable and to any of you that keep saying this is not a CIVIL rights issue.Coretta Scott King herself before she died contested and stated that Gay rights ARE a civil rights issue.I hope this can change eventually this was a cruel slap in the face especially when people who understand what weve dealt with prejudice discrimination bigotry actually vote AGAINST US.Gay rights are a HUMAN right as is LOVE.

Anyone with self-respect knows it is righteous not to force your moral beliefs on others.

The people at these rallies are pursuing what they want within the sanctions of government (i.e. the first amendment which includes the right to assemble peacefully, and the usage of the justice system to fight prop 8's passage).

No one's rioting, blowing up buildings, or making threats on anyone's life here.

At times, it takes the government to protect the rights of a minority (see the 1960s).

Civil rights don't stop at color lines.

As a society we are getting closer to change; and soon change will come.

To me Love is not Black and White, Love is the color of the rainbow.

I am a traditional married man but what gives me the right to say, that two people who love and care for one another the way I do for my wife ( and we aren't a perfect couple) can't commit to one another in the union of marriage. Call it non-traditional marriage or what have you.

For all the people that are against this, open up and grow with life or shrivel-up for lack of the water from the spring of life.

Live Learn Love Evolve, Create-Greatness and give it away...

The crazy part about that is for some reason people forgot we black people are political liberal, but socially conservative. No to prop 8 should have put in much more work in the black communities in California instead of thinking they were just going to inherit the black vote.
I wish I lived there to vote no though.

The constitution is an inspired document, and it is rather quiet on the nature of unions, so voters have the floor. Little tolerance can be assumed on part of the founding fathers for something other than 'natural' marriage -- what did they know would come about? Give them credit for leaving certain things to amendments and states' rights.

So here we are: opponents are displeased with the outcome on Prop 8, but rather than have the majority rule, we seem encouraged by voices here to open rebellion. Forget the law voiced by the people -- anarchy is being espoused in a childish rant.

Why seek your comfort in reactionary moves of intimidation and worse against the Mormons, Catholics, Evangelicals, blacks & latinos, married straights with children, who have all declared California safe as regarding the sacred institution? Is this different from radicalism of other sorts?

The law is now declared -- find peace with it. Be civil in response, because this has resulted a much clearer mandate than a 4-to-3 decision.

we need to adress and come to an understanding that the liberal is destroying the U.S. they are minority who are costing the tax payer millions of dollars. No matter how manny times gay sex is performed by a gay couple they will not concieve, itis not natural. My children nor anybody elses should be made subject to their way of life.We should also take realistic look at the amount of money this will cost our state and schools. Then they want to force churches to marry them when GOD has repeadedly condemed homosexuality.

I agree that gay couples should have the same legal rights as straight couples. But I don't think the state should have a role in defining if gay's can get married, I think that's something that churches should decide on a individual basis. It seems like this is a cross between Church and State, which will not end well. Though I feel the law that was passed in some other states that said gay couples could not adopt, was unjust and obviously not in the interest of children. Since there are many gay couples out there that would be willing to take in a child who desperately wishes to be with a family, no matter what their prefrence.

Gay facists. Everyone gives lip service to civil rights and people taking pack the power, whatever that may by. The problem is, when the people exercise their power and tell the state of CA that they do not want gay marriage in their state the civil right to self rule is now a problem.
Gay facism. If the civil rights of the voters are meaningless why are the so called civil rights (someone tell me where in the federal constitution this is covered? This is a power reserved to the states and the people- and they have spoken) of the gay marriage proponents more valid?
    Gay facism.

What legal course are they trying to take? That the proposed amendment was unconstitutional?

  •

They want to make the constitution unconstitutional

Prop 8 is part of the constitution since Nov 4th at midnight.

People own the constitution, not the court.

If they try the voters will rebell by millions and throw the judges out.

I think these lawyers in black robes want to keep their cozy jobs and their 401k
